No more pumping for now.

I was going to suggest the smaller ones, yes. The issue with 8mm ones and lantus is that you may find it doesn't form a reservoir properly, which could lead to variable absorption.

Only size I have... Issued on 21st June 2006!!! -8mm....

As I'm lean would you say 4mm??
Yes go for 4mm. When I showed my new at the time consultant my 8mm needles he couldn't believe I was prescribed them. There are 4mm and 5mm. 8mm look like giants comparing to them

Ya know, this is so interesting as prior to the pump I always used 8mm needles as this is what I was originally prescribed and it was only until a few months ago that I realised smaller needles were available! Honestly, that might sound dense of me, but it's true. Bear in mind that I've got limbs like Kermit the Frog and barely any fat on me at all.

I'd never been asked about needle size by any of my care team either. Makes me wonder if some of my problems weren't in fact down needle length. I don't mean all the time, but at least some of the time.

I had to use 8mm needles on mdi as that's the smallest the Penmate would take. Checked recently as thought by now they would do one for shorter needles but no such luck :(

My old pen not sure which one but it's really old takes 4mmtheir so nice and pain free, I've got a couple of boxes recently supplied I think their for my disposable lantus and the other ones prescribed whatever they are "stuck in fridge",

As I've never used anything but the pump for my last 15 yrs although as I said earlier I've been bolusing with my old pen as the handset on pump is so slow

Going to get 4mm ones tomorrow.. Think my GP is going to laugh when he sees the date on the box and the expiry date of 06/2009!!!

They aren't a problem at all.. But will ask for the shorter ones!!

Shows how often I used to change my needles!! The box only looks like a few have been taken from it...
Still using the novopen 3 too. Although I got the 4 I couldn't get the top on it after the cartridge and needle were put on it!!

Shows how heavily I relied on pump. Only used syringes if pump failed and these haven't been used in nigh on 5 years!!! Don't think GP is going to be very happy with me tomorrow!!

I am needle phobic and the Penmate is a device that screws onto the novopen and fires the needle in for you when you press a button. I couldn't manage anything else and it seems they haven't updated this device. Otherwise I'd be using 4mm, although not sure if you have to be super thin for those anyway. I used to prefer injecting straight in and not having to pinch up skin.

Ouch I've never been keen on devices that do it for you I've always wanted to have my own control, yes I've found with 4mm you don't have to pinch which is so good

DD I don't know how the 8mm don't bother you when you're too slim to take any sets... The 8mm hurt me... ! DSN said its cos there's not enough fat... And quickly gave me 4mm -- which have been fine :-) Funny how different things affect differently...

To be honest, I was amazed too!! And I've pushed them all the way in!!

I'm using my legs at the moment. Have been lucky so far that I haven't hit blood.. But I know as soon as I put needle in that I've hit blood when it hurts. Seemed to hit blood all the time with 6mm sets in legs when I tried.

I truly can't do in my stomach. That really hurts but may try when I get 4mm.

Got levels down to 4.5 3 hours after tea but now shot up to 9.0!! Have given a correction.. Its now 5 hours after tea which was mackeral and salad, homemade nut thing, 2 sq dark chocolate and a handful of nuts.. I know normally on pump I would not get an increase.. 5 hours after dinner its my basal rate...

As I was low all last night after giving 15 and high all day then I decided to split the once daily 20 unit dose the nurse suggested over the phone to 10 units morning and night. However, it is going to be suck n see and this is only 30 hours of MDI again. I know I won't get right using Lantus or Levemir but the freedom away from the sets and probs far exceed the current fluctuations...

Everytime I have been to loo or got in car ir sat down today I've got so used to feeling the sets that despite them not being there I've got in to the habit of expecting them to be. Even to the point of pulling my shorts up and pulling them out slightly to avoid a non existant set.. Guess this habit will take a while to break!!
Yes exactly the same here! :-)

I use 5mm needles and I am fairly porky, my BMI hovers around 30. So I am hardly lean. I used to use 8mm like most people did I suppose, but haven't for years.

I agree this is something diabetes care teams miss. They need to call attention to the option of shorter needles because I suspect a lot of problems are caused by unnecessarily staying on the longer ones.

I also have a box of 12.5mm needles, half inch, total beasts, that I occasionally use for intramuscular injection of large correction doses.

Definitely

Totally right. Same here. I'm not beating myself up. Each couple of days for me is broadly better than the previous couple of days, so that's fine. I'm learning and improving. It feels SO good!!

Well mine's totally t*ts up today so far!!!!

Since last night...

(Not working today though!!)

21.35. 4.9 after tea... Nothing ate
23.20. 9.0 no correction as thought I went low all night before.
00.20 9.1 did decide to correct - 1 unit
03.20 6.3 perfect
07.45. 11.0 split dosing since last night.. 10 units lantus and a correction and additional for DP 3 units NR
9.43. 11.0
11.47. 16.1 !!!!!! Have now whacked through 4 units NR. (Extra as over 12.0)

My reckoning...

I now have levimir.... Inject 15 morning and night - tonight.

Working tomorrow... So Give 2 units for DP and any correction

Any other suggestions..

I do not eat dueing day time.

Dinner tonight is salmon n salad... Peacan nutty thing I've made.( hubby says best oudding he has ever tasted!!) and 2sq dark choc n my walnuts.

Sleep and pain is hugely improving.. So it may also be my body recovering from "sweetener" poisoning...

Still remain happy to be off pump cos these highs will be sorted soon...

Any thoughts from anybody else?

What time would others advise injecting the levemir on these rises??

It does feel like being newly diagnosed though, all over again!!

My first thought we be only change one thing at a time, if possible, so take the Levemir the same time you were taking the Lantus, and then work forward from there based on test results.

takes a good 3 days for levemir to get in my system and i need higher doses then i can bring them down so my advice is be patient, it will come good. just keep adjusting. wish i could only eat once a day :) mind, i do often skip breakfast and like you, inject a few units of fast acting to stop spiking high.

I'm pretty sure I was on about 32 units of lantus pre pump.. But 5 years ago now and I can't be 100% sure but just got to be patient I guess. Doubling novorapid correction has brought me down to 11.9.
Patience is a virtue that I will have to add to my personality!!!
Lol;)

Seems so strange to be asking for advice again!!

Taken today off so this normally increases my basal anyway so something I am not going to get the flexibility off with MDI...
