Hi Everyone. I am new on the forum and up to now only had posts on the greetings forum. I told my tale of woe and I immediately had help particularly from Cugila and also other friendly forum members.

Well I went for my check up with the diabetes nurse who was quite shocked at the person that walked into her clinic. I was knowledgeable and had taken ownership of my high meter readings and told her that if she didn't want me to test daily I would buy my own strips! Well well well what a different person she was now.

She immediately prescribed strips for me to test myself twice daily. She also doubled my Metformin dose to two 500 mg tablets a.m. and p.m. She also expressed delight at how much weight I had managed to shed even though I was not grossly overweight. Then she blew my mind away by agreeing to everything I am doing diet wise but did suggest that I are a plate of oats in the morning because it is a slow carbo release food.

My readings are now generally under 9 in the mornings and under 7 before I go to bed. This slightly puzzles me as I don't eat between these readings so would have expoected my morning reading to be the lower.

I have not yet started trying oats in the morning because I really don't want my reading to go up which I strongly suspect it will. I think I will wait until the summer when my excercise dramatically increases as I cycle a lot. Mentally I have been given such a boost because I really thought I wasn't able to get down to these levels again after being in the high twenties! Thanks everyone for all the help it is so nice to know there are others struggling with exactly the same problems and meeting with them on this forum has been magic!

All good things come to those who wait!

Well done with your improvements, it is nice when things start to turn. One thing you can be sure of, we have all been there at some time, life is a learning curve my friend! :)

Thanks Nigel. It is really good to know one is not alone! Just for the record my weight has gone from 87 kg to 82 kg in a month and a half which is great because I feel this is long term loss not short spectacular loss only to gain again. :D

No need to be alone when there are good forums such as this around, a good source for information and sharing a problem or two. Cugila (Ken) is the forums version of Marjorie Proops!

Hi Alexander.

First of all I remember you well from December and our first contact. The confusion, the questions. Well we can see now that the advice then was taken on board and you are seeing the benefits of the diet that is right for YOU. Well done, I am sure you will continue to lose weight, improve those all important Bg numbers and feel fitter and healthier.

What a great success story you have to pass on to other Diabetic's. We are glad to hear stories like this, because it makes the time and effort that everybody here puts in so worthwhile. We thank you for letting us share in your success. Whatever route you chose to control your Diabetes, that is the main thing. It has to work for you and this method obviously does. Great stuff !

All the best.
Ken :D

Nigel........Marjorie Proops ????

Hi Alexander and well done on your progress. :D

Pleased to hear that you had such a positive response from your DN, it certainly helps not to have battle your way. However, from what I have read on the forum, I would be surprised if the oats are a help to you when you start your summer cycling and it will be interesting to hear what your testing shows if you go that route. The chances are you might have discovered an alternative way by then.

I am going to try alternatives but also the oats. If I see it is pushing my readings higher I will stop right away. My reading last night was 5.1 and there is no way I am going to allow anything to push my readings up again. Are there any other alternate suggestions for breakfast? I have been trying all vatiations of egg plus kippers and low carb and low sugar yogherts. 8)

I am partial to grilled lean bacon, grilled tomato and poached eggs with a cuppa to wash it all down with :D

Alexander you could try some of the following:
Smoked haddock and poached egg,
Bacon and eggs or bacon and tomatoes
Tomatoes, insides scooped out and egg broken in and baked, then topped with chopped, crispy bacon. Same thing but just done differently and tastes different too.
Cold meats and tomatoes
Cheeses of all kinds
Plain yoghurts with fruits and seeds – and try stirring up to a teaspoon of cinnamon into it as it is really yummy.
Enjoy :D

Just another quick thank you for the diet suggestions and all the friendly advice. I am now steady at 81 kilos and my blood sugar level is between 4.7 and 8.0 but mostly under 7 and I am sticking rigidly to my sugar free and low carb diet and feeling much better for it. I am going to start attempting a little oats and other slow release carb foods as soon as I start cycling in the spring and will let you know my results from that. I will also be seeing my doctor for a three monthly check after my diabetic nurse appointment and am quite positive I might even be able to REDUCE medication for the first time. I am a total low carb convert now that I have experienced and measured the difference myself. While I am with the doctor I am going to let him check my cholestrol as well as this is one of the only aspects that worry me a little eating all the foods I have traditionally felt were not good for the heart. I am feeling fairly confident that it will be O.K. though as I am already on beta blockers. It's a beautiful winters day here in the S.E. of England and my dog's pestering me to take him out now. Have a lovely day everyone! 8)

If you haven't yet read any of these books, I think you will find them most enlightening.

  • The Great Cholesterol Con by Dr Malcolm Kendrick
  • The Cholestrol Myths: Exposing the Fallacy That Saturated Fat and Cholesterol Cause Heart Disease Dr Uffe Ravnskov

The first is an easier read than the second :D

They should both be available from your library.

And just for good measure..

Not to be missed

  • Good Calories: Bad Calories by Gary Taubes.

alexander...
Before you read those books, or after if you like, check out the British Heart Foundations website for the official take on Cholesterol........makes interesting reading too. Here is the link:

http://www.bhf.org.uk/keeping_your_hear ... terol.aspx

One of the causes of high blood cholesterol levels amount people in the UK is eating too much saturated fat. The cholesterol which is found in some foods such as eggs, liver, kidneys and some types of seafood eg. prawns, does not usually make a great contribution to the level of cholesterol in your blood. It is much more important that you eat foods that are low in saturated fat.

You make me laugh.

This will amuse you.

Bracwol.......you just make me laugh.

Does somebody giving an opposite view so people can make THEIR own minds up bother you, we are not in a totalitarian state.....yet ! Oh, the analogy about 'dying out' is quite crass considering my present situation. Still I suppose it's to be expected.

Have a nice day. :D

Hi alexander-v-o,

That is just superb! Exactly where you want to be! Keep up the good work!

That should keep you well clear of the very nasty complications that can come a diabetic's way.

Best wishes - John

Bracwol.
I don't find death amusing, sorry. Not even if I was fit and able. I have seen too much of it.

There is one thing even more vital to science than intelligent methods; and that is, the sincere desire to find out the truth, whatever it may be.

Hi Bracwol.
I am sorry for your loss however long ago it was. Some things never go away.

I used to be a Traffic Cop and dealt with death in the West Mids for nearly 19 yrs as a specialist Accident Investigator. I have never forgotten the people who I saw either dead or dying, old people, young people, tiny children......all sad losses to this World. All left some sort of mark on me. Sometimes I wish I had never seen all those things, however it shaped me. Made me what I am.

I too only seek the truth, I like to see all sides of the picture, then I too make my mind up. I never allow anybody to dictate to me how I think, how I should feel, how I should behave. That is me, who I am.

Regards
Ken.
