Poorly controlled... :-(

Ok, so this is the reason I'm here and why I went looking for a forum. I really need support and I know I'm only a newbie but I'd appreciate the help.

I've been a Type 1 diabetic for 12 years. The first 5 years were fine, I controlled it well and I was great throughout my pregnancy 7/8 years ago.

Since then though, my control has just gone and now I'd say it was very badly controlled.

I have no motivation to sort it out, despite being seen by the psychologist at the hospital and the staff at the diabetes clinic.

I am well aware of the complications I may face but because there is no immediate impact, I seem to keep thinking 'ah, I'll get round to sorting it out one day'.

I really need help/support, am secretly terrified but still can't seem to sort it out.

:-(

Hi Cookiebell, and welcome.

Have your hospital team suggested you attend a DAFNE course? Many people find these motivating as well as very useful.

Step one change your picture to something like a plate of bacon and eggs reinforcing cakes is not good, nor being honest is the cookie part of your name....yes picky but if you are here for help call them baby steps.

Second Q what was it that made you kick control into the long grass start way back in the "mists of time" if we can help the inital reason is a good place to start and the fact you are here shows you also want a hand.

Yes, did that several years ago now, it was very helpful :-)

That's a very good point, but 'Cookie' has always been my online name, maybe I should change it for this forum?

New start new life change them all after all you want to take a step forward a new you it isnt easy l changed mine to join here and have had a different one for ..dunno since l came on the internet however many years ago.

It was a good call to work with the hospital psychologist. Do you know why that did not help you regain your motivation?

Not sure really, it was helpful but it was only a few sessions.

Honestly just don't know how to get back to controlling it all again!

Remember every day your sugars are high the damage is taking place to your nervous system.
You won't feel it ... until you do and then it's to late.
I take it it's diet that's the problem ... having the time to bother with the right stuff ....

Have you?? How did you get back on track? Can you explain how you felt?
I felt like everything I tried made no difference, Hba1c kept going up year on year so what was the point.

New toys gave me new hope - DAFNE and the pump. In turn that renewed my efforts with low carbing, led me to LCHF and renewed my efforts with my CGM. Most important all these things gave positive results, which made me feel there was a point, that I could influence things and make a difference to my own health.

Diabetic burnout. Ouch. Yes, been there. :-(

Yup. Me also .

@Cookiebell , great name and avatar btw :) What worked for me was going back to basics . That and viewing it as a challenge like any other, which it is ;) If something is easy, it is not a challenge and like all challenges there is motivation, progress forward and pitfalls, but a goal and pride of achievement . Plus, you start to feel better in yourself very early on and that makes it all so much easier.

Start with baby steps, if you are not testing, get back in to the routine of testing and recording. If log books are not your thing, get a great app.

Get help on your side from the diabetes team, if a DAFNE refresher type course is available , ask to go on it or dig out your old DAFNE stuff and re read.

You will find much support on this forum , and glean some good ideas and advice too :)
Welcome and good luck !
