Hi all,
Just wondering what everyone uses as the carb value for raw potato? (Just normal big potatoes) I've been using 0.2 per gram for ages but think it's a bit low (can't even remember where I got that from).
I can find values for boiled / jacket / mash but can't find just normal raw potato...
I'm also looking to confirm raw sweet potato values (0.15 per gram I think?)
Thanks
Matt
Oh that's fab thanks!Hi @staffsmatt
My old dietician taught me in ounces as she said it was easiest to remember: 4oz raw potato is 2 carb units/20g carbs, 6oz is 3carb units/30g carbs, etc That is, the carb units are half the weight in ounces.
I've found that works well for bolus calculations.
Oh that's fab thanks!
Is sweet potato the same do you know?
Thanks again!
Matt
Spud Lite which are a 20% lower carb potato here in Australia are 9 grams carbs per 100 grams.
Brill - when I was pregnant I remember there being 2 egg size potato's on the food swap list !1 potato the size of a large hens egg has 10g of carb in it approximately. I was told this when I was diagnosed in 1965.
I was diagnosed in 1966 and was told the same. I have always counted potatoes as this and works well for me.1 potato the size of a large hens egg has 10g of carb in it approximately. I was told this when I was diagnosed in 1965.
Oooops! I should have said 25% less carbs.Spud Lite which are a 20% lower carb potato here in Australia are 9 grams carbs per 100 grams.

To eat a potato, pasta, bread or rice, these will not lower reduce ones blood sugars, its as simple as that.
Hi staffsmatt,
According to the DAFNE (Dose Adjustment for Normal Eating) Carbohydrate Portion List booklet, raw potatoes are 1.5 Carb Portions (15 grammes) per 100g.
Sweet potato (raw) is 2 Carb Portions (20 grammes) per 100g.
What size potatoes are 15 grams?Hi staffsmatt,

Hi, you're replying to a very old thread and you're unlikely to get an answer from the earlier posters. 15 grams is about the weight of a compact disc (CD), so 15g of potato is not very much. A standard portion of potato according to the supermarkets' "servings" is in the region of 200g, so you'd expect 30g of carb in that. What size potatoes are 15 grams?
Hi there, thanks for replying. I didn’t mean 15 grams as in weight, but as in 15 grams of carbs. The small egg size ones are 10 grams aren’t they, and the potato I’m referring to is a-bit bigger than that, about the size of the palm of your hand, about one egg size potato would fit into the other potato I’m referring to, so would you suggest it’s about 15 grams or more, I know it’s an old thread, but am struggling abit with counting carbs in potatoesHi, you're replying to a very old thread and you're unlikely to get an answer from the earlier posters. 15 grams is about the weight of a compact disc (CD), so 15g of potato is not very much. Have you got any scales? It's a bit difficult going off "egg-sized" and I'm not entirely sure whether you're referring to gram weight or gram carb content. There have rarely been potatoes in this house for the last five years, so I can't weigh any and show you a picture.Hi there, thanks for replying. I’m referring to gram carb content, and a medium potato does contain about 26 grams of carbs, the one I’m referring to is palm size, at least I know now if it’s 100 grams, then it contains 15 grams of carbs and no I don’t have a weighing machine, but I need to buy one and thank you for the helpful infoHave you got any scales? A potato that has 15 grams of carbs would on average weigh around 100g. This is based on the rough estimate that potatoes are around 15% carb (being otherwise mostly water). The internet says that one medium russet potato weighs about 170 grams or six ounces, and the potato is about 4 inches long. I would expect there to be around 26 or 27 grams of carb in that one potato.
The attached picture shows (or says it shows) one single 100g potato.
Does that help?
