Does anyone know about the 30/70 humulin or lispro 75/25? Is this insulin good? Does it keep blood sugars low and is it less likely to smack weight on. I'm trying to find some better options than lantus. We are not funded in new Zealand for levemir unfortunately.

I'm not sure mixed insulin is really an alternative to lantus. They are mixed insulin, they have both long acting and short acting insulin in them so they aren't just a basal insulin, they also do the bolusing and when taking a mixed insulin you would have to be on a fixed amount on carbs everyday, at fixed times. So they might not be that good for dieting as they aren't that flexible.

Are you having problems with lantus? Have you done basal testing to check whether you are on the right dose?

No problems atall with the lantus . I'm just finding it difficult on a lchf diet to lose weight it's proving quite difficult so thought I might try a different insulin. If I get a pump next week I'm a bit concerned as I read you put on weight so I'm now thinking not to get a pump.

I've never liked the idea of mixed insulin. Eating the same amount, at the same time every day is a bit too much for me. I like the flexibility of basal/bolus.

When I was using Lantus, I found splitting my dose worked better for me to keep my BG levels in check. Have you considered this option?
I take 12 units morning an night. My bs are ok it was more the fact I can't seem drop weight yet I'm eating like 40grams 50 maybe of carb. I'm considering the ketogenic diet so I'll try taking only 20 grams of carb a day for 4 weeks see how that goes if an insulin change isn't a good idea.

Mixed insulin regime was appalling for me. Did not work for me at all - insane swings, uncontrollable highs, terrifying lows even after I switched to a the-same-thing-eaten-every-day-at-the-same-time-every-day-for-a-week diet at the request of my DSN. I put myself back on basal/bolus against his advice after a weekend of flirting with DKA and was better within two days.

I don't think mixed insulin is going to be a good move. There's a reason it was replaced by newer therapies, it's inflexible and I found nighttime hypos were a common occurrence. You're stuck with fixed amounts of foods at set times, any increase in activity you have to eat more because you can't adjust your dose to take into account.

This handy picture shows the actions of the various insulin types...

Hey Nessa,

I think you're clutching at straws here hun - considering changing to what is now considered an older and more out of date insulin mix to control weight is not a good solution as it will mean less flexibility. Also not considering a pump again based on what you perceive to be an issue with gaining weight isn't helpful either. Firstly what are your priorities is it your weight ? or is it having better control which would mean less opportunity for potential complications further on down the line ?

I am on a pump I have not gained any weight, so let's rule this myth out, using a pump means being able to make smaller insulin adjustments rather than rounding off to the nearest half/full unit. Using a pump means greater flexibility with exercising more..

If weight is an issue then you need to seek counselling from your healthcare team on this, I think you're letting this over rule making wise decisions in your own health here.

I'd say there both important too me. I don't think being over weight is atall healthy. I never had this issue before diabetes so I can only attribute I'm the gain to diabetes. I'm going to do the ketogenic diet as lchf isn't enough. So I'll see how that goes. I'm just trying to get both in a good place. My bs are fine more on the lower side so having hyops a bit but I'm trying to sort that. Pretty tight balance tho 4.5 an 6.0 to stay between. Or my target by dn is 6...

From looking at what you have just posted in regards to your BG results then you have come on massively Nessa, so you should be proud of the results you're getting. Being over weight is really what you feel is overweight, from a medical point of view this may not be over weight however if it affects your BG control and use of insulin then it's an issue you need to discuss with your DSN. However not considering using a pump because of what you've heard could be an issue with gaining weight isn't a plausible enough reason for not using one, as with anything in life until you've tried it yourself you won't know :)

Mixed insulin wont help with weight loss at all. it means you HAVE to constantly graze to keep bg in line.

I lost about a stone when I switched to a pump, its honestly the way forward if you want weight loss - you don't have to eat if you don't want to. the reason that people gain weight going on a pump? its easier to just put the food into the handset - no need to inject. quite quickly you can lose track of what you're eating and it spirals.

@nessa1970 I lost weight when I started using a pump. I'd also point out that most people find they need less insulin on a pump. As you know, pumps only use fast acting so you wouldn't have to have Lantus then at all (or any long acting insulin). To my mind, a pump is the closest thing we have to a functioning pancreas.

Apologies if I've already asked this but did you start the Metformin again?

And have you tried speaking to a dietician so she/he can check your diet? LCHF doesn't suit everyone, so perhaps having a fresh eye checking your diet is ok would be a good move?

Yes your very right. I will be totally open to a pump if that's the choice the professionals make for me. Who knows it could be amazing. Cheers for the reply. Yes I am pleased with the way my numbers are... I woke up this morning 6.1. Amazing. Cept I woke up like a block of concrete in body and mind. I couldn't really wake up properly had a bit of a headache just let myself slip back to sleep . When I woke I was heavy tired an bit headachy still but a low blood sugar. I thought a hypo in my sleep. But How's that possible if my bs was so low... any idea

Hi. Yes my dn said I could see a dietitian. So I will ask next week at my appointment. Yes I'm taking 2 metformin at night. Mmmm I wonder 8f that is contributing to my awful wake ups... quite scary not being able to wake up but trying to in your mind but just succumbing too, I can't so you go back to sleep. I will record or try to a 3am bs read but I found last time I just didn't have the energy or care to move cept turn alarm off. Will talk to dn this week I text her re this as it was quite frightening I felt like I'd had 10 sleeping pills

Hi Nessa, so your waking result was 6.1 which is great - however unless you test when you wake you can't know for sure it was a hypo. I am having a few night time hypos at the moment and if I don't wake during them I know in the morning as my BG is always above 10 and I feel like i've got a really bad hangover. You really need to wake at 3am and test to know for sure ?

I don't know much about Metformin, but if you're feeling unnaturally tired for no obvious reason, then in my opinion it's always worth having some general tests eg iron levels, Vit D, coeliac screen, thyroid.

Testing in the night is hard when you're tired. What I do is set an alarm on my phone, put my phone on the floor far enough away from my bed so that I have to get out of bed to stop the alarm, and put my meter beside it. Then the alarm goes off, I roll out of bed, switch it off, test, then it's all done in a minute or two and I just go back to bed and carry on sleeping.

Most T1s are best with Basal/Bolus and not mixed insulin. As someone else has said Novorapid, which I use, is a good Bolus to use with Lantus or Levemir Basal - there are others

I woke up this morning to a 10 an felt the same as yesterday. Had I tested yesterday when I first sort of opened my eyes before going back to sleep for hours I was probably a 10 or up. The 6 is from after hours of sleep as I couldn't wake properly. Today I woke an tested bs was 10 still in bed now haven't eaten or drunk anything an I'm now 6.1. I'm still bit heavy an tired.
