Hi

I have an appointment with Mr K my consultant at 11 am, tomorrow morning, 31st July. I still have lines in my vision and the eye still feels'heavy', so dont know if MR K will laser the eye, he might think the eye looks ok to laser. I'm crossing my fingers for some good news
After that appointment, I'm to go upstairs and get my ACCU-CHEK meter downloaded for my DSN to look at when she's back from holiday, at the end of the week. So a busy, busy, busy morning in store :roll: RRB

Good news from mr K and little bad news..........but no laser eye surgery today The dodgy eye, he said he would leave alone today because he said " if it aint broken, theres no need to fix it", there was no recent bleeding and didn't want to cause any unduly problem. He said my left eye is looking very good, but the cataract in my dodgy eye is getting bigger, he said it is in the way of his vision ( looking at the back of my eye) and something will have to be done about that cataract, but not now, phew, and to go back in 6 months time :thumbup: and he wished me a Happy Christmas lol So thats not too bad at all and I won't need to see him until 2013, great, even though I do like and admire him, I'm glad not to see him for 6 months :wink:

I hope things are not to bad for you all and you are all in my thoughts. Take care :wink: RRB X

Yes cataracts do get in the way for them and laser etc does make cataracts groew faster. I have had one of mne removed. Really not so bad at all. Nothing to worrry about.
I think it is easier if you know yourself it is affecting your vision. I could seee practically nothing in the eye they removed the cataracts from so there was no question I should have it done.
The consultant wanted to do the other eye but I wasn't so keen as it wasn't bothering me.

Glad its all over wih for you for a while anyhow.

Thank you I forgot to say I have to take my glasses in next time as Mr K wants to have a look at them. I googled cataracts and the consultants can prescribe glasses that can show up ( I think I remembered that correctly, but brain goes on holday and forgets to come back :lol: ) the progress of the cataract. I will try to read up more on that subject. I didn't say to Mr K,( brain = holiday) that I feel as though there is something in my eye at times, a forgein body but I did tell him about the pain/discmfort in. around that eye, but it only lasts a few seconds. It's good to write about these problems, you don't feel so alone do you? Take care RRB

Interesting link SG. I am sure one day they will have treatments for most forms of sight loss.

I agree with the point made in the video and noes that it is difficult to measure the vision of those with somne degree of sight loss.
I was interested to hear that they used special charts for these people in the US.

I amd i suppose everyone else will tend to test themselves in the same way as the woman given the stem cells did = judging by the extent to which they could see detail in everyday things aroung them.

This is one thing which concerna me quite a lot in my reatment and in some of the studies I have read. Too much importance seems to be given to results of tess with the normal eyechart. 1 letter difference is sometimes used to judge success or failure.

Especially with diabetic patients this may mean little .We all know how our bg levels can affect our sight but even with non diabetics he ime of day when you are tested can make a difference.

I know that the hospitals do not rely solely on these results but , everything else being equal and if you are perhaps seen weekly as am at imes I still hink hese tess are given an undue importance.

My scary eye drops are currently giving me hypos in the low 2s {unexpectedly in the late evening}. However I treat them I then have very much raised fasing levels the next day. Fingers crossed that they are bringing the pressure in my eyes down at the same rate !

I suppose the need for repeatable tests is at the heart of the scientific process and method but I do agree measuring vision has so many different aspects that it can often be more of an art than a science.

We mammals have a lot going for us but when it comes to making good injury we really have drawn the short straw ... I mean fish can regrow their retina and heart muscle and even our close relatives the reptiles can regrow limbs and have a lifetime of new teeth to chew with

Not at all I put it all down to Mr. C's surgical skils. I can't thank Unbeliever enough for recommending him, and it's all down to this forum!

Unfortunately yes. In my case though, I would have lost my job as i was just about to start a new job, so I would have lost more money if I had not had it done than I lost through paying for the procedure. Basically it's like I am working for free the next few months! Ouch! But totally worth it in my case.

Jyst been trying to catch up with all ur news.
So sorry ub about ur situation am thinking of u all.
My holiday did me good mentally but think my eyes are a bit worse. Vision is awful but font know if its where ive been on the go travelling and its shook it all up.
Ac how r ur eyes feelin now all sounds good from whst iv read.
Its a bit fifficult ive put my font to the biggest but its taken ages to read these threads so sorry if i ask quesions that u habe answered already

Hi Leb glad you had a good holiday but sorry to hear your eyes are no better. It's not long til your appointment with the consultant now is it.
I saw Mr. C today and my eye is healing well. I did a field test just for practice and got all the points with both eyes open. With each eye separately the right eye was perfect but the left eye there was one blind patch but he could not say for sure as I'd not been focusing properly during the test so the reliability was impacted - anyway not that it matters too much as the DVLA test is the both eyes open one which was fine.
I spoke to him about having another pregnancy, basically he said it is a risk and that worst case scenario I may need more laser. He said everyone is different so it is hard to say what will happen but I need to decide whether it is worth risking the worst case scenario.
So, the big news now is that we are thinking of adoption. For me it is about more than the pregnancy as I have a genetic form of diabetes which means any child would have a 50% chance of inheriting it. We are just tentatively thinking about it, but I am going to a drop in session run by an adoption agency on Thursday to get some more info. It may be that it will not be right for us but who knows - we may decide it is the right thing to do. Although ideally I'd have my own child, part of me loves the idea of being able to have a child without going through another pregnancy. I'm not sure I could go through what I've just been through again, particuarly in the right eye which is my better eye. And especially not in a pregnancy. Anyway it is something to consider.
Well I am ok to start my new job now, starting next Monday and really looking forward to it, I'm ready to go back to work now.

Do so pleased 4 u ac. As 4 havin another child whatever u decide will b amazing. Its a big decision either way and i feel both options are amazing 4 dufferent reasons.
I am back at eye unit on wednesday. Its weird cis im so much calmer about it all now
even tho my vision is worse i can b positive about it at the moment. Who knws that may change after i see the doc but 4 now im dealing with it all alot better.
Ive been guven the funding 4 an insulin pump which im getting tomorrow. Although its been talked about for over 5 yrs once the duabetic consultant gave the nod itd all gone so quick. Less than a month infact so im keeping my fingers crossed it will help with my oberall control. God kniws ive tried EVERYTHING else.
Once again ac im so pleased for u its nuce to hear some gd news.
Rrb all sounds promising 4 u 2 as they r leavin u 6 mnths it must mean ur eyes have responded 2 the laser.
Ub i hooe ur in a better place right niw. Like many others on here i pray that things will at least stabiliser 4 u if not better.

Hi Leb/RRB/anyone!

I know I should be pleased that my eye is doing well, I am actually a little bit sad tonight

I have realised that I don't think I could go through with another pregnancy as I just couldn't risk the retinopathy coming back, I'm trying to shut the door on it so I can get on with my life and getting pregnant again would be like opening the door to it. Also no one can quantify the risk, Mr. C said think of the worst case scenario and whether you can risk it, well for me I don't think I can as the week I had the bleed I just about lost the plot and I can't go through that again and we'd struggle to find the money for private treatment again.

I don't know if adoption will be right for us, it's not that it wouldn't be my biological child, that doesn't faze me, it's more that it would very likely be a child rather than a baby, I think very new babies are very rare in adoption, and what I really want is another baby fresh out of the womb not a child with a history when I haven't been there.

Why does this retinopathy have to affect so many areas of my life - my work (through driving), my family?

Oh well at least we have the one, I keep telling myself that a lot of people don't ever get the chance to be a parent at all.

I just really wanted two to complete the family and give him a play mate, but I really don't think I could go through with it

What would you do if you already had one, would you leave it at that or risk it?
