Rant - Diabetic Friendly ....NOT

Ranting a friend is on F/B messaging me as l post this . Her other half is diabetic and just about to get a box of Thornton diabetic chocolate l told her to not get it and why. Also asked what sugar was in it.... reply

Is it just me who sees labels such as diabetic evil we are lucky and know what carbs are but the average person doesn't. Elderly often wont have computer access and will have well meaning family. l didn't make the sugar connection on carbs till l read about it here..l saw the word sugar and just that.

She is now furious and going to confront Thorntons (the shop is opposite their flat) but as l said the saps who work in the shops are box shifters you need to go to head office they will at most be polite and dismiss you at worst dismiss you.
 
Personally I wouldn't be buying any of these products especially when they are labelled 'diabetic'. However, provided they don't eat them all at once I can't see that they'll do any harm if they know what they are doing bg wise, some of these diabetic chocolates contain artificial sweeteners that can have a laxative effect, perhaps they might find out the hard way if they eat too many ;)
 
It isn't the carb content that is going to cause a problem.
Most of the carbs will be polyols so they are unlikely to raise your glucose much, though some varieities may have more effect than others. (I think Ricola sugar free sweets have something like 99g carbs per hundred but they are all polyols)
The evil is more likely to be from the extreme laxative effect that it has on many people.

DUK are lobbying for an end to the use of terms like suitable for diabetics or diabetic chocolate and the EU has left them out of an investigation into foods that have special nutritive uses ( both on grounds that people with diabetes can select their diets from 'normal' foods)
DUK says about polyols

These polyols have fewer calories and less of an effect on blood glucose levels than sucrose. However, the small amounts used in a product may not be sufficient to benefit blood glucose control or weight. It is not exactly clear how these polyols should be ‘counted’ by people who are adjusting their insulin dose according to the amount of carbohydrate they consume, as not all the carbohydrate is absorbed.

Further research is needed in this area. Excessive consumption of polyols can also cause diarrhoea,
flatulence, and a laxative effect - especially in young children because of their low body weight

Yes, it really annoys me. Rather than produce quality dark 85%'ish chocolate that IS more suitable for diabetics these companies just produce cheap junk chocolate and label it as suitable. I try to persuade my family now to avoid things labelled as 'diabetic'

I have just checked my tub of Truvia and it has the words "suitable for people with diabetes" on it. This is a photo of the refill pack :confused:

Labelling a food as ‘diabetic’ is unhelpful and misleading for the consumer and implies
health benefit. Some people might see it as a stamp of approval or even essential for
people with diabetes

And yes together with the banner saying that they are sponsors does suggest some form of approval.
Not good in my opinion.

I love toffee.... or did.... I used to treat myself to a bag of toffee from Thorntons labeled Diabetic of course the laxative affect did not bothe rme too much but the passing of wind did ....jeez wonder you dont take off with it/............./:pompous::meh::greedy:
 
I confess that before I was diagnosed, not knowing any better, I used to buy my Type 1 Grandmother some of the Thorntons diabetic chocolate for Christmas. Someone bought me some a while ago and it wasn't the nicest tasting stuff. Much better just having the real thing and accounting for it.

You have to be careful with truvia. I bought the small bag but use a tsp or 2 when making ice cream. They sell it in a bigger bag.BUT THIS IS NOT TH E SAME PRODUCT! It is a mix with sugar! The baking blend. Fuming because I just wanted a bigger bag of the sweetner so it lasted longer! grrrrrr!

Although, to be fair, I don't eat the milk chocolate because it's too sweet for me now, but that's an after effect of re-educating my taste buds.
I wouldn't refuse the 'diabetic friendly' dark chocolate they sell though.
 
I always find that eating any diabetic chocolate makes it all end up like onion gravy.....

I'd much rather have a bit of real chocolate and allow for it
 
Everything, and I mean EVERYTHING, is diabetic friendly. Put a sticker on anything you like saying 'suitable for diabetics'.
Bar of chocolate? Suitable for diabetics if eaten sensibly
Packet of biscuits? Suitable for diabetics if eaten sensibly
A packet of Haribo Tangfastics? Suitable for diabetics if eaten sensibly
A packet of potatoes? Suitable for diabetics if eaten sensibly
Fish and chips? Suitable for diabetics if eaten sensibly
Yes we need to watch the carbs, yes we need to watch the added sugar, but, most things we can have. Except maybe candy floss. That's bad.
 
I was put on Insulin a while ago and found it gave me hypos it felt so weird shoving a mars bar in my mouth to correct the hypo the taste of the chocolate was nice though... and I am given thorntons for christmas but not too keen on them...

Totally agree in my mind Thornotons tastes like "cheap chocolate" the type my gran use to buy down the market when I was a kid
 
i wish they'd make things like minstrels / maltesers out of 85% chocolate. i even thought of making my own chocolate peanuts by melting 85% chocolate down to coat the plain nuts, but it would most likely fail dismally. or home made cinder toffee coated in 85% choc most likely to many carbs.

Tried to make bubble and squeak last night out of cabbage, cheese and cauli rice and an egg to bind it, didn't really work ended up crispy and bity it needs the spud to make it right.
