Hi there...
sorry in advance for the long post but I really need some advice as I feel like Ive no where else to turn right now.
Ive just had a really terrible few days with awful symptoms and to be honest Im scared that Im putting my health at risk.

I have no formal diagnosis from my doctor as yet but I strongly believe he is letting me down as i ended up at A&E last Wednesday feeling very unwell with all blood results coming back suggesting I have diabetes (I think) Please do correct me if I am wrong though as my only knowledge has come from google searching.
Fasting - 9.2
Hba1c - 48
Random BG of 16.4 and 20.6
These are the recorded results from the hopsital...however I was released from hospital before these blood results had come back from the lab..in good faith that my own Gp would carry on any further treatment and diagnosis if neccessary.

So the following day I became really unwell again with all the same symptoms..I was very faint, sweat was pouring off me, words were slurry, could barely stand, mouth dry and intense migraine..to the point I had to have my 6 year old speak on the phone to my eldest daughter because I was literally due to pass out. They took me down to my Gp and he was completely dismissive of my symptoms and told me to go about my life as normal until the blood results come back.
The following day my Gp phones me with the blood results above and said because the Hba1c is only 48 and "borderline" this basically cancels out the other fasting and random tests which were higher? Does this make any sense? I understand the A1c is an average of the last 3 months however I havent been feeling like this for 3 month? Im worried about where I am right now! Once again his only advice was that I should go about my life as normal!
This just doesnt seem right to me? and I did question this..asking how can I possibly carry on as normal when everytime I eat my blood sugar is spiking up really high and I feel really unwell..like unable to function level of unwell. He said I just have to put my trust in the knowledge that he is the proffessional and knows better than me. At one point he got super angry and said something along the lines of "you will always gets people who want to **** the system" What does that even mean..what is it he thinks I am trying to do??
I think he must think I am desperate to have diabetes or desperate for the drugs or something...I really dont know..but he has made me feel awful, Ive been in tears all weekend, terrified to eat and feeling like an idiot. Believe me I am not looking for any more illness or bad health, ive already had my fair share but I feel I cant ignore this..as its making me ill and it is distressing for my kids aswell as me.
I have bought myself a little blood monitor thing to check on my own in the meantime..for peace of mind or at least to try and keep it as low as possible.
Any advice at all would be greatly appreciated..

It is very difficult to offer advice or assistance without a proper diagnosis.
First step must be to get one, if you aint happy with your GP, then demand a replacement you do have that right.
By now the definitive test should have been run either at A&E or with the GP, again ask for results (C-peptide is the main one I think) as they may have them and not told you! A1C of 48 is Borderline (pre-diabetes) but it seems as though you MAY be progressing quickly; until diagnosis is confirmed might I suggest looking at the low carb high fat diet options that keep most Type2's and many type1's under a much better level of control. Assuming you are in the UK, which part are you in? Local knowledge from other members may assist you getting to see a Diabetes Specialist Nurse soon as well.

Ok. Take a breath. Firstly, HbA1c of 48 is the first number in the diabetic range. It normally needs 2 HbA1c tests to confirm diagnosis.

We can't diagnose, we are not qualified.

Of course there may be something else going on. Can you get an appointment with a different GP?

Stress will raise your glucose level. Make a cup of tea. Have a read around the forum and ask questions.

With a fasting blood glucose of 7 or over and an HbA1c of 48 or over, your doctor is negligent to send you off to live life as normal. The correct thing would have been a second HbA1c to confirm the first, and then unless it is significantly lower, put you on the diabetic register and care pathway. Random BG of over 11 is also in the diabetic range. Your doctor needs a refresher course.

I suggest you make an urgent appointment with another GP, and be firm about this. I feel this is essential for the sake of your health. If in the meantime you feel as bad as you did when you went to hospital, you need to take yourself back there.

Meanwhile, have a good read round the forum to see how others are managing, and I will tag @daisy1 who will arrive (maybe tomorrow) with an introductory post that is very useful.

Thankyou so much for replying. Im im scotland and since its a bank holiday weekend I will 100% be finding a replacement Gp on Tuesday. Ive been overwhelmed and upset more because of the way Ive been treated I think..it really wasnt proffessional at all.
Ive been getting in a panic because of the intensity of the migraines every time my blood goes up. Ive been getting readings varying between 16 and 21...thats at 2 hours after eating. So Ive literally been starving myself trying to keep them down (not that that will do me any harm)
I appreciate you taking the time to reply...sometimes a little acknowledgment is enough to make is seem okay

No need to starve yourself, just cut the carbs and eat the meaty parts, Scotland is still part of UK so NHS 111 can also help if you are really that concerned, being in Norfolk myself I don't know about clinics in your area, perhaps someone else will pop up soon! Stay calm eat sensibly and TRY to calm down as much as you can in the short term. Remember most carbs (and therefore sugar!) come from Bread, Pasta and Potatoes for us, as well as the obvious! Omelettes are good........

You can stop your sugars going up by not eating any sugar - and by that I mean carbohydrate. All carbs turn to sugar once digested, and that especially includes rice, pasta, bread, potatoes, certain other root vegetables, breakfast cereals and most fruit. If you cut right down on those and increase your good fats and perhaps extra protein, your blood sugars will not spike so high.
Eat as many eggs as you like, plus meat and fish (as long as there are no coating on them), green leafy veg and salads, mushrooms, a tomato, avocado etc. For fruit you can eat a few berries, and for fats you can eat dairy and full fat natural Greek yogurt, cream, butter, cheese and so on. Have a look at dietdoctor.com for ideas https://www.dietdoctor.com/low-carb/60-seconds

I'm very sorry that you're going through this and yes please get a second opinion or a different doctor. You don't need to starve yourself, maybe look into a high protein or high fat low carb diet. Which will mean no rice, breads, pasta, any potato and certain fruits, sauces and drinks. Up until you find the right help and diagnosis.

Hi. Your readings at the moment may well indicate diabetes but not at the present at a dangerous level. Cutting the carbs down will help whether you are T1 or T2 but if T1 then medication such as insulin may well be needed shortly if your BS continues to rise. In general your random readings would need to be sustained in the 20s or above to become dangerous. If you are not overweight then T1 becomes possible which c-peptide and GAD tests would help prove. Yes, do see another GP but don't panic in the meantime. Your symptoms could be something other than diabetes

I'm sorry you've felt like you haven't had the support of your GP. You will find this forum wonderfully supportive. I find eating sensibly (LCHF) helps stabilise my blood sugars, while fasting elevates them. Eating will also help you feel better. You will get to the bottom of it with a second opinion, I'm sure of it.

Is that a typo? LFHC??? I hope so! ;)

If your blood sugar stays high and you feel rubbish, go back to A+E.
I agree with the others, avoid the carbs (eat cheese, meat, eggs, greens, avocado or olives when you're hungry) and see if your numbers go down.

Good luck and let us know how you get on!

If type2 do as in post 7,low carb/high fat diet. And yes on new GP.Do a journal and record all meals and pre and 2 hour post meal blood glucose.Put up your last days diet and people will evaluate it for you.

This has all been so helpful already. I dont know why but Ive been thinking low carb would also means low fat...seems obvious now but my heads been jumping all over google from one bit of info to the next. So meat eggs olives and cheese it is. What about nuts and seeds are they okay?
I will continue to cut the carbs for now and register with a new Gp tomorrow.
Thankyou again for all your advice

Don't forget fish! Oily fish such as salmon is a must. I'm not a lover of fresh salmon, but I have at least 3 of the small tins of red salmon a week, usually for lunch with a few cherry toms and some cheese. I sprinkle a generous amount of milled flaxseed on the salmon, and also have mayo with it.

Seeds provide us with lots of good nutrition and fibre, so have as many as you like.
Most nuts are fine - there are some that are not so fine. I can't eat nuts, so someone else will have to advise you on that.
Don't forget butter, cream, full fat yogurts, and perhaps cook with butter, lard, duck/goose fat because the highly processed liquid oils are bad for our health - they are inflammatory.

Yes, it is not low fat nor is it low protein. Nor, believe it or not is it low salt. We need extra salt when we low carb.

If I make a suggestion. Use the time before your next appointment to write down, without emotion, everything that you have been through. Keep reading it through until you are satisfied. Don't mention your GP

You may or may not be offered another HbA1c immediately. It may depend on when your last one was.

Download the mySugr app and use it to record your food and numbers.

A word of warning. Not all surgeries are behind low carb. If they push brown bread, rice etc, smile sweetly and come back here.

The main thing it to confirm diagnosis and make sure nothing else is going on

Obviously you are worried sick. When you talk to your doctor it's fine to come across as concerned. Try not to let your emotions take over in case you come across ..... Well you know what I mean.

Keep reading the forum and ask lots of questions.
