My Mother in law is in hospital following a fall and has been diagnosed with MRSA following blood tests , she is 89 years old and not well at all , coughing and being sick . Thing is , my husband is wondering about the wisdom of visiting, he wants to see her and so do I , she is 6 hours car drive from us so it would mean staying overnight . Husband is now worried about possible effects of MRSA on me as a diabetic and that even if he went alone, there is a slight possibility of bringing the infection back here to me, is this worrying over nothing or is MRSA a big threat to diabetics ?

Customer helplines that use recorded menus that promise to put me through to the right person but never do - and being ill. Oh, and did I mention customer helplines :)
I could be wrong Kate, but as far as I'm aware MRSA is spread through open wounds, so as long as you don't have any then a visit should not be a problem and would I suspect help to cheer up your MIL and aid her recovery. Check with the hospital if you are worried.

Personally I would be more worried about catching the NORO virus visiting a hospital at this time of year :)

As I say though I am not 100% sure about this but no doubt someone here will have the definitive answer for you

Thanks Sid , we`ve just been told that it is respitory MRSA with a severe lung infection and that , as she is coughing a lot, it can be airborne spread, puts a bit of a new light on it now, means masks and gowns etc . as she is in isolation x

Sorry to hear that Kate, that really sounds quite nasty, I hope she is being looked after well and can find the strength to fight this.
