Hi guys
Well I was given the news this morning that I am a Type 2 Diabetic. This information was given to me over the phone by the doctor! No face to face with this lot just dump there you are deal with it.

I have not had chance to get my new meds as I work nights and to be honest really wasnt fit enough to go get the script.

Well as my title says, Im a biker and the news has scared me to death.

Can I just bore you for a while? Ok well I will lol

Some 7 years back i had a breakdown and now suffer depression so you can imagine right at this moment what the news has done to me that way. I just feel like this on top of other problems has put the tin hat on it all.

On Facebook my friends have been kicking me up the A... saying chill out etc as if its no big deal.

I have to make an appointment with the Diabetic nurse to go through all the stuff the Doc failed to tell me and of cause pick up my meds.

Thanks guys sorry to have bored you

Take care

Tigger

Not bored!

Difficult when you get diagnosis from GP in such an uninvolved way.

Great that you've come to this Forum where you'll get loads of interest and support.

It is a big deal when you're first diagnosed and there's so much to learn. Many people (non diabetics) think they know all about it.

Try to take it slowly; get nurse appointment and medication and ask him/her about them. Then ask hear for more info and anything at all you want to know about.

Go easy on yourself and learn everything you can.

take care,
Jane.

Yep, comes as a shock but its a great opportunity to make a decision to turn things round, get healthy and fit if you are not already. In some ways my diagnosis is the best thing that has happened to me and I feel better both physically and mentally rhan I have done for a very long time indeed.

You will get lots of helps here, theres more than one way of dealing with this condition and there's lots of people here who will be willing to help you find the way that works best for you.

Thank you for the replies. Just a big softy at heart really lol

My big problem is I work perm nights so at the moment have no idea how to get the diet etc right when technically my life is other way round to normality. I.e Awake at night sleep day, Eat at night etc.

Oh well must ask the nurse,

Cheers

Tigger

p.s
Yep Tigger is my real Nickname since 4 years old lol

Check your diet here on this forum. Many DNs just follow rather poor guidelines.

It is difficult for a diabetic working even during the day because the right foods do not exist in sandwich shops, works canteens or pubs and cafes. You can eat well with type 2 diabetes if you eat the right foods but it takes a bit of planning and means preparing your meals for yourself. But, you will be able to pack meals up for work and make good soups and stews to take in flasks.

You could do a lot worse than to get the Hairy Bikers 1st book about dieting, called the Hairy Dieters and just adapt some of the meals. Getting some basic equipment like a slow cooker and/or a soup maker and some good recipe books and you'll cope easily enough and enjy your food.

If you get one of those wide necked thermos flasks, there is no reason why you can't take big portions of things like this lamb and barley stew to work:

Weight and blood glucose levels will come down and you will enjoy your food. People usually start to feel better within a few months. Even people who have had diabetes for many years tend to feel better once they get around to sorting their eating out. It's mostly a matter of testing and working out whats suits you and what things to avoid.

Hi Trigger, sorry to hear that you are feeling a bit under the weather etc. There are plenty of people to make friends with on here who can relate to you as we are all in the same boat just at different stages but we have a lot of fun here as well as plenty of good expert professional advice and we share and support each other so...................................hello lol

:playful:Welcome, Tigger,

Yes, there are lots of great people on these forums!

Regarding your day/night work and sleep cycles, I would take the suggestions offered by the previous posters. I might add that you may want to purchase some Tupperware food-bins for storing and traveling. That's besides the flasks for soups and liquids. It will take some thinking and adjustment, but, you can get through this unscathed.

Also, if you have some spare cash, take a ride to your local thrift-sore (charity-shop) and find gently-used cookware (along with the slow-cooker previously mentioned) that you might want to try out.

Btw, I share you love of motorcycles, but, have yet to own one of my own. Oh, well, another goal to work towards!

Welcome. You were lucky to have been called by your doctor. I was informed by a receptionist by saying I needed to see the diabetes nurse. This is a good site for you to be. Take control and you'll be fine...
As for previous post... Tupperware & Biker. LOL

Hi there! You have definitely come to the right site! The people here are really helpful and give great advice! I was diagnosed on 28th of Jan 2014. Doc was not a lot of use and diabetic nurse should be shot (figuratively speaking!) so I feel your pain! You could try Dietdoctor.com ( I have been been on this eating plan since 29th of Jan and have lost 9lbs without trying!). Be prepared for lots of resistance from an amassing number of people who are suddenly experts though! This website has been my sanity and a lifeline! Would also recommend a blood sugar monitor - it'll make you feel more in control! There's one you can get on line which sells cheap strips (otherwise £25 for 50) . Can't remember name but ask and someone will tell you. Doc may not give you them on prescription - mine won't! Anyway, welcome and good luck with whatever approach you decide to take!

Hi Tigger,

I have a "rough tough" biker other half, and I know from experience that you biker types may have a crunchy outer shell, but you are always big softies at heart!

Being diagnosed type 2 is always scary and is nowhere near plain sailing, but it's also the best excuse ever to take the opportunity to get healthy.

This forum is excellent for finding tips and advice on how to tackle your blood sugar.

Garr l just lost an entire reply that blasted Andys fault.... when he posted my screen burped and then my post went down the toilet!!

So lots of meters about good advice in the glucose monitoring section. I use the freedom freestyle lite and got it free from the manufacture the strips cost about £15/100 direct from same place l am told. In the chemist it is between 22 and 28£. So far my dr has paid for them.

It isnt easy to manage anything on nights l ended about 11 yrs pretty much nights only in 2012 and have to say l wouldn't go back. I loved them at the time but decided time to move on. I think that my diabetes was a lot caused by them but stress also took a toll.

If l was doing them now not sure how l would cope with diet having said that the Low Carb High Fat would have made a big difference to me as l am not hungry between meals and feel full. The sweet things that kept me going are now out the window and so you need to feel full so you don't get that l need something sweet proper food wont fill...Assuming you do but all night workers l know get it.
If you have no other health problems l would seriously look at LCHF. It seems a lot of faff but it actually isnt and a reverse lifestyle full time is very different to doing normal times or rotational shift work were you get other life times into your routine.
If l can help give me a shout l understand what you are on about from my joys . You may well find as your health improves you will sleep better.

The details of the LCHF diets are all in the low carb forum. Also following comments from here l am going to ask my Dr to run a blood test for Vitimin D and Calcium l think both of those on me are low from nights and lack of sunlight so ask for those as well. Wish l had known about them before!

As has been said go see the nurse then bring the info here "we" (the royal we) will then correct most of it

"As for previous post... Tupperware & Biker. LOL"

:pWell, he did say he had a soft side, and I also didn't think that having tunafish-salad all over his motor-cycle would do anything for his self-esteem. Nothing is as tough and strong and reliable as Tupperware, for storing food. (I didn't suggest that he go to a Tupperware party. That would be a bit extreme.):woot:

i was told by my doctor thusly:

<bear walks through door>

doctor "you have diabetes and you are very overweight"

<bear takes off heavy coat and fleece>

Doctor "Oh . Well, you have diabetes and could do with losing a bit more weight"

That was the last time I saw that particular doctor
