My Husband is struggling with getting his Diabetes T2 under control. His medication has very recently gone up from 2 metformin to 4 Metformin a day. He has also very recently started taking a statin.
we have tested His sugar levels with a prick test all week 3 times a day. . Morning before breakfast ,lunch time and dinner two hours after meals.

on average his readings go between 11.mmol and 15mmol. I believe this is still too high? But not sure what else we can do. His diet and food intake has been great all week. Any ideas what is going on or are his readings ok?

Hi. What do you mean by a 'great diet'? Metformin only ever has a small effect on blood sugar. Reducing the Carbs in the diet should have larger effect. There are other drugs that can be prescribed but try to optimise the diet first. Those readings are a bit too high but not dangerously so.

I believe he has a healthy diet, lots of veg ,chicken, fish ,water. Hardly any carbs or added sugar. I am not sure what else we can do, he has even given up milk in the last few weeks And upped the exercise.
Thank you for your reply

Hi yes I agree with you 11-15 is too high but I know how it feels. If I wasn’t on medication, even with very low carb my BG would be in the teens and I’m puzzled as to why when most T2s I know can have great results on low carb only.
When you say veg is it the leafy green ones, not potatoes, carrots, swede etc? And no rice, pasta or bread? What’s his typical breakfasts, lunches and dinners? This info helps us to help you and hopefully point you in the right direction ;)

As others have said little more info on what meals also does he do any fasting at all I've found doing 16 - 8 fasting has really helped me.

What kind of physical activity is he doing? How long and how often?

I was recently having a similar experience and so I'm back to recalibrate my routines. They worked to control my blood sugar for 23 years, and then suddenly they didn't. I hear/feel your frustration and worry. I'm sorry he (and you) are struggling.

Those tests don't tell us a whole lot. Yes, they're high. But we don't know what his numbers were before the meals. If the rise was 2.0 mmol/l or less, he should see improvement in over-all numbers eventually. Worth relaying the numbers from before the meal and 2 hours after the first bite, rather than just telling us the range, because that says relatively little other than that he's still too high. Would also help if you include what was in the meal that went with the numbers.

Couple of things could be doing on:
-You don't have all the relevant numbers, so he might be doing better than you think.
-The statin is upping his blood glucose, or something else is (too), like a cold, inflammation or infection, or other medication,
-The meals aren't as low carb as you think. Please be as specific as possible when it comes to his meals. You mention veg, but what kind? Are pulses included for instance? Anything starchy can cause a rise. Is the fish battered? I know the questions probably sound stupid, but just trying to rule anything and everything out. ;)

Good luck!
Jo
