went to see my doctor at the hospital today about my diabetes but hadnt managed to have my blood test so took my blood glucose tester for them to see. i was still a little worried as no matter how hard i try i wasnt getting my glucose count between 5-7 which is what my doctors diabetes nurse had said i needed it to be. you can imagine my confusion when he told me that my count which averages from 9-13 was fantastic he told me that this sort of count is what he would hope my glucose would stay at so asked him about the 5-7 and he told me he would not expect me to have a count below that but if I got into the low 5s then i need to worry sort of thing lol.Because my counts were always up in the double figures i thought i was doing something wrong. I just wish that my nurse at my Docs had fully explained that to me as my hospital Doctor said he would only expect a 5-7 count from someone without Diabetes. So PHEWWWWW all my worries are over lol

I thought i was going to have to go on another insulin as im already on 60ml twice a day of levimar along with all the tablets so im very happy!!!

Hmm, Sean. I don't really know what to say, but I will have a go anyway.

Although I do not wish to rain on your parade, I need to say that to me an average from 9 to 13 would be very worrying to say the least.

Maybe you would wish to check this link: http://www.phlaunt.com/diabetes/index.php - It certainly helped me - and many others, I know - to get a better understanding of this diabetes thing.

Now, I don't know whether your diabetes is of a Type 1 or a Type 2? Strategies may be different for coping with one or the other.

Sorry Sean, maintaining levels in double figures is not a good thing. Did they take blood from your vein today to be tested?

Apologies for more rain on your parade but the others are quite right. Those levels may be fantastic to your doc but nobody here would be happy to run with them long term. Sorry.

I've just spent some months getting my BGs down into single figures. Sure I have a blip every now and again because I have eaten something I didn't realise would spike me or spike me quite so severely but these are once or twice a week into double figures.

Late onset T1, several auto immune issues.
Humalogmix25 twice a day, Methotrexate 25mg once per week, FolicAcid 5mg once per week, prednisolone 5mg daily, Allopurinol 300mg, Calcichew-D3 800iu, Levothyroxine 50mcg, Atenolol 50mg, Losarten 100mg, Aspirin 75mg, Nicorandil 20mg, Nitrolingual GTN spray, Metformin 2000mg, Allimemazine 10mg, Lanzoprazole 30mg, Atorvastatin 20mg, Co Codamol 8/500mg, Depo Medrone (Methylprednisolone) or double Prednisolone for 7 days in case of RA flare.

As others have said-they're not great levels in all honesty but many of us have been there in the past with double figure readings but it can get better but my advice is drastically reduce the starchy carbs in your diet(If you eat a lot of them)and 'Test test test!" with foods and if you see a reading over 7.8mmol 2 hours after eating a certain food then either reduce the quantity of that particular food or avoid it altogether-it takes time but the results can be very good indeed.:)

Sean - are you sure this appointment wasn't in a dream?

Seriously though, it's a concern that you would be encouraged to be comfortable with levels skirting double figures.

Please have a read around the site. There is great information available and lots of folks on here who can share their experiences and support with you. If you have questions, just ask.

Like the other posters I agree that your average measure needs to be a lot nearer the non-diabetic level. I don't like spiking over 10 and aim for 8 or less on a 2 hour measure and between 5-7 fasting level. I keep the carbs sensibly down to help control. If you decide to put tighter control in place then having a second insulin (i.e. going over to a Basal/Bolus regime) would help. Your Levemir shots are quite high? Do you mind me asking whether you are overweight? If so, the low-carb route would help with both that and the blood sugar supporting less insulin. Sorry if I'm a bit negative, but for good health it's worth it.

I'm a bit disappointed by all the negativity in the post saying that you shouldnt be proud. Its a shame! when i was diagnosed with diabetes my figures were at 26.9! and when i finally got them down to below 15 my Dr was ecstatic! i kept them there for nearly a year before moving on the trying to lower them more. The enthusiasm from here at that stage was soooo encouraging as i knew they had to be between 5-7mmol and after a few months of getting no where near that, i was super worried that i was going to be in some kind of trouble, or they were going to admit me to hospital (my worst fear!)

How long have you had diabetes? People have to remember not everyone is the same and it takes some a lot longer to gain any control of diabetes never mind between 7-5mmol!

How high was it before? between 13-9 could be a massive leap in the right direction, you never know!

Have you been shifted about on insulin's a lot? This can effect you levels too, you need to get the right insulin to suit your body before it can work truely properly!

So well done! you should feel proper proud of yourself!
People need to remember everyone's different!
