HI ALL FIRST TIME POSTING (FEW YEARS SINCE I WAS A VIRGIN!)
diagnosed type 2 about 6 years ago, went onto metformin and found them superb, blood sugar low nearly all the time and lost weight ( i am about 19 st at the moment) always been big.
hate fruit and veg love meat and starch, didnt seem to matter what i ate, too good to be true though after about 2 years i was getting very itchy hands and when scratching them came up in very large blisters that came from in side / under my skin as opposed to a burn type blister that come from outside or the top layer odf skin, blisters burst leaving patches of red raw skin so painful it was unreal. after a lot of time wasting by experts i found out that it would stop if i didnt take metformin!
proved it several times experts dismissed me as a head case docte so fed up with me he prescribed gliclazide, worked well for about 6 months got hypos and eventually good sugar levels.too good to be true though.
on 4 tabs a day now and blood sugar all over the place have dinner test before bed sugar 12 or 13 test in the morning sugar 16.
been reading the forum about low carbs so thought why not give it a try.
day three blood sugar after dinner and before bed for last three days 6.5 fantastic
my dinner last three days bacon,egg,tomatoes,mushrooms,1 slice of toast and a couple of crackers with cheese for afters, washed down with a nice glass of red, fantastic, and now i read i may even lose weight on this diet.
so sorry to ramble but i have a couple of questions.
what else can i eat for low carb meals
what about atkins diet is this any good
thanks for reading t this if you got this far
dan :D

Hi danq.

You want recipes for a low carber. Have a look here. There are loads of recipes for breakfast, lunch and evening meals. Just a starter, I'm sure that others will give you their favourites too.

Atkins is a good place to start, can usually pick up a copy in a second hand shop for cheap. Good luck with it!

Good luck with it Dan.
You can't go wrong with anything you'll find in the meat or vegetable aisles in the supermarket ( minus the tatties obviously). Then add in some seafood, eggs, butter, cheese, cream, nuts and you've got the raw materials for an infinite variety of brilliant meals.
Atkins is an option, or Prof. Clark's book Diabetes Revolution has lots of recipe ideas too.

Cheers,

Ignore those ads Dan. Yet more idiot advice from people who mean well but haven't the first idea about the human metabolism.
It will seem counter-intuitive at first, but ask your GP for you most recent blood lipid results. Then cut out the carbs and eat a diet of meat, fish, veg, dairy etc. I'll put good money on big improvements by your next appointment.

Cheers,

fergus

Great results danq, hope you continue to benefit from your changed diets. As Fergus says, don't worry too much about the fats. It's the processed saturated fats that are the baddies. As long as you stick to the unprocessed fats found in things like olive oil, butter, cream, nuts, seeds, these can actually be beneficial and in combination with a balanced reduced carb diet and exercise, should help to improve your lipid profile.

Nothing better than getting a reading as low as 4.8%! Well done mate - keep it up, and good luck!

IMO fats, even saturated fats, are only "bad" in the presence of excess carbs and the excess insulin needed to process them (which is amplified by insulin resistance)

Trans fats, and their new replacement, are pretty bad. An excess of Omega 6 over Omega 3 is probably none too good. Fish and/or fish oil, and proper grass-fed meats, will help redress the balance there. White meat and lean meat is preferred by some, and monounsaturated fats like olive oil (the more peppery the better) can't be argued against.

Look at who is bankrolling the current anti-fat campaign: Tescos and Unilever (who make margarine) oh and Kelloggs of course, so no conflict of interest there eh?

I'm not a conspiracy theorist, but it does make you wonder...

Danq, have you read 'the diet delusion' by Gary Taubes. Should be on the reading list of anyone wanting to low carb!

Check out the sponsors of DUK, the ADA, the AHA, the FSA etc. Start to see the same names recurring?

Oh yes I read a recommendation for that book somewhere else recently. It'll probably take me the rest of the decade to finish reading Taubes, then I'll add it to the list <G>

I wrote elsewhere

"The Hippocratic Oath seems to have been changed from "First Do No Harm" to "First Spend No Money" without us being told. It didn;t get posted, obviously.
