What is wrong with losing weight...

Absolutly nothing it will help with insulin resistance and ultimately help to control blood glucose levels which is aaaallllll good. The problem SuperRams is that yo yo dieting does no one any good at all.

It may seem that I am not encouraging people using this diet but I do really wish you all well but I would not be true to myself and would be doing everyone a disservice by pretending that I think it is a good idea.

As for coming back in a years time I have already said that I believe that will be the real test of this study, but in the meantime have a look at this thread from July last year, perhaps the people who undertook this diet then would care to comment on how they have fared over the last 3 months since finishing the diet?

Please dont feel that I am having a go at anyone here I just have to say it how I see it, I also have a good friend who is a Derby County fan so I wont hold that against you either

Hi. I am with Superams this thread is a great way of supporting each other through the next 6 weeks.
I dont believe it will cure us but hopefully we will all be in a better place with regards to our condition than we were before we started.
I lost weight a few years back (about 3.5 stone) and managed to come off meds for a couple of years.
I have probable put a good stone back on over the years and with the progressive nature of diabetes I was in danger of having to increase my meds again. I am hoping that after this diet I can reduce my meds or even come off them for a while. For me its not about a cure its about retarding the inevitable progression of diabetes.
I cannot understand why people knock us for giving it a go. People warn about this "drastic" diet but what harm will it do, no one has mentioned any specific dangers, only that we may put the weight back on. We are all type 2 diabetics and we are all monitoring our BG levels. We are not going to die or damage our health -as far as I can see its all upside and no downside!!
By the way what bike have you got Geordie? Sold my ZX9R but miss the buzz.

hi bluehills yup thats the point ot offer and proffer support to anyone who is doing it cos believe me i need it lol.
I have a vtr1000, just had it sprayed bright yellow lol, also just had to have it repaired as cam chain tensioner bust and bent the valves doh, but now its repaired its going like a train and when i lose my weight and become lighter itll be even quicker lol.
Nearly passed out the other week as i pulled a wheelie lol unintentionally of course lol

Second weigh in day
Another two pound loss..pleased with that wasnt expecting it tbh
FBG this morning was 5.1 so all good
Thats a total weight loss of ten pounds in two weeks, of course it would have been more if I hadnt been to gym and put so much muscle on lol (yeah right)

Well done Geordie - I am sure you have gained loads of muscle as well as losing loads of fat!

FBG this morning was 5.7

Hi. Nice to see that the weight is still coming off. I think that the odd slip is not too important seeing as we have a daily energy deficit of about 1500 cals!!
I weighed in this morning at 200.8lbs so a loss of nearly 10lbs.
BG this morning 4.9.
Visceral fat down another %age point to 15%
Never mind the critics this diet is doing me nothing but GOOOOD!!!
Nice bike - always like the sound of a twin. Thought I had better sell mine b4 is was banned or locked up. They are just too tempting.

Yup everything is going in right direction, bg before tea was 4.9 hasnt risen above 5.5 for most of day, not checking as much as im using so many test strips lol my doctor will be whinging soon.
Aye love the bike not very good weather at minute but get it back on road in summer i think.
Excellent figures too eancounter and bluehills

That's great results for you all. Well done

It's very enticing reading how well you are doing but I'm still unsure if I could do it. I've tried to cut out snacking between meals today as a start. It's only 5.30 and I've failed miserably already.

On a scale of 1 to 10 how difficult do each of you find it in general?

Keep up the good work :)

(I think part of my problem is I can be swayed by whatever opinion/argument I happen to be reading at that time-very indecisive, I know  )

Hi. Choco.
I find it pretty easy. I read somewhere that this type of diet blunts the appetite
I think as time progresses it will get boring. At present I reckon its only about 3 out of 10 for difficulty.
Breakfast: grilled tomatoes/mushrooms/onion black pepper 40cals
1pm : Shake 160cals
4pm : salad (various leaves/celery/cucumber/tom/pepper) 40 cals
7pm : Diet soup 160cals
8pm: Vegetables cooked in stock or stirfry in 1cal spray 70cals
10pm Shake 160cals
Total cals about 630.
As you can see I spread the meals out during the day but most are later in the day as I dont seem to get very hungry in the morning.
I was a lot hungrier on a previous diet when I was eating 3 times the number of cals.
I was like you before I started.I didnt think that I could possibly survive on 600 cals a day so was very suprised at how easy it has been so far. I even went out for a run today only 3.5 miles but before I started the diet I didnt think that I would have had the energy to get out of a chair!!

I used to be indecisive - but now I'm not so sure

bluehills on a scale of 1 - 10 i would rate it as a 4 so far.

Sticking too shake for brekkie, shake for lunch, stir fry for tea and sometimes the shake sometimes not depending on how hungry i am!! cant believe it me saying not hungry on that amount of food lol.
Lidl are selling beef jerky on thursday for 99p a bag, gonna buy a load of it for when im off diet as its an excellent snack food , very savory.
Thats one thing sometimes have a need for something sweet but a cup of black tea or glass of water satisfies that tbh lol
bloods are good again so its staying low

FBG 5.7 again !!

I am finding the diet a bit easier this week - my second week. The first week felt about a seven, but now about a five out of ten. I get the odd overwhelming craving (just had one for pizza of all things!!) but it passes quite quickly. I am missing cups of tea with milk! Don't like black tea, and black coffee is just not the same as a good old cuppa xx I make up the cafe latte shake with hot water rather than cold as it sort of feels like I am having a milky drink which helps.

I have shakes at all meals, and have a plate of veg in the evening. I either have a stir fry made with water or I have veg roasted without oil. I have had a salad a couple of times, but prefer to have a hot meal!!

You certainly make it sound good and easy.
Do you think the shakes could be replaced by something else equivalent to 160 cals (eg diet soup 3 times a day)? I can't take/don't enjoy powdered drinks (hot chocolate, cocoa etc) I am sure I would give up if it had to be just shakes.
Sorry to be a nuisance but I am teetering on the edge here-will I/won't I?? :?

I concur with all the others, it is relatively easy to follow and there are only a few times I have felt the desire to NEED food and I have managed to resist. I think the idea of the diet is v low cal and nil fat hence i dont think diet soups would be applicable, the slimfast shakes are nice in my opinion. go on give it a go..

go for it choco, i find best way to make shakes is to use one of the protein shkers you get for the gym, put water in, two scoops of slimfast, then shake for twenty seconds, leave it the shake again and that gets the powderyness(is that a word) out of the shake, eventually you dont miss food really and actually look forward to your shakes lol.
its sixty days out of your life and even if its not a cure it certainly makes you think of food in a different way, went to sainsburys tonight and so wanted to get something to chew on but resisted and walked out empty handed as they didnt have the ingredients i needed to make a low carb bread to see if my wife and son would eat it.
When this is over i might stick to the shakes for breakfast and lunch then have a 'roper' meal for tea that will include a lot more stir frys, roasted vegetables and mixed salads, then twice a month have a treat, either a chinese or italian or an indian or a pint or a.........lol oops.
As ive always said not going to live like a monk

Oh what the hell

I think I'll go to Tesco tomorrow for the shakes. After all, I've nothing to lose (except weight) and everything to gain (good BG levels).

Probably last half a day-better to have tried and lost than never to have tried at all

Thanks to you all for your advice.

Hi Choco.
You can buy diet soups that have the same nutrients as the shakes. "Celebrity slim" and "The biggest loser" are a couple of makes that I have tried. They make a change from the shakes - I usually have one each day to add a bit of variety. I have also been trying the made up shakes rather than the powdered shakes. They taste MUCH better but are more expensive.
Although I have said I find the diet pretty easy I think your head has to be in the right place - you really have to want to do it -then its easy

Some may feel I am trespassing but this is an open forum and I have opinions too. There are some observations that I would like to make.

Nobody has taken into account that the participants are doing a modified version of the Newcastle Experiment.

Another poster was concerned about Admin's non involvement as there is no endorsement or caution either. We will have to wait and see if that happens.

Sid Bonkers has been shouted down. Knowing Sid, it is obvious that he has genuine concerns, is not a party pooper and has made some very valid points. I too am concerned, not so much for the participants as they can make their own choices in life. What concerns me is that newbies and onlookers might see this as a "magic bullet" and know very little about diabetes yet.

Anyone who has not run this past their Dr.should do so as they have been issued with information from the Newcastle Team.
1. Has your Dr. told you that it is only suitable for Type 2"s?

2. Has he assessed your iron status and mentioned vitamin supplementation.

3. Is there an agreement about medication regimes?

4. Is there an agreement that you can phone a professional re your b.s. levels being too high or low?

5. Have you agreed a weight loss target?

6. Has he advised you about the possible outcomes if you have macrovascular problems?

7. Does he know that you have modified the diet?

As previoulsy mentioned a number of times on this forum, no-one should start this diet without consulting their GP or diabetic nurse. I saw mine who knew very little of the diet and asked if i would be their guinea pig. I am a grown man and made the decision to do so.
My FBGs have fallen from 13.4 (on four metformin a day)to between 4.5. and 5.5 thats with no meds and I have lost ten pounds in weight in two weeks.
I feel fine, am exercising as much as i was and have more energy than normal, dont want to fall asleep at five o-clock like i used to and some one actually said to me the other day, you look really well, really healthy.
What can i say, its working for me and thats all i can say, everyone is different.
