I"m not on statins so no idea. Do you really have to be on them though? ..... There are many learned theories saying cholesterol's not a bad thing ..... I think they are only of benefit once you have a heart attack.
With a little online research, it seems they can - https://www.google.co.uk/#safe=strict&q=statins+blood+sugar
Why on earth would the GP think lowering cholesterol levels 'as low as possible' makes sense. Cholesterol is needed by the body as part of it's repair mechanism. These guys need to do some learning before they dish out pills.I was on statins briefly - my cholesterol levels were normal but my doctor wrote me a prescription saying because I was type 1 he wanted to lower my cholesterol level to as low as possible. So I got the prescription filled and everything changed - my legs felt week, I lacked energy and my BGs were difficult to control. So I stopped taking them - feel much better and my cholesterol levels are sill in the mid range of normal. It was an easy decision to make - be satisfied with normal cholesterol or be one of the walking wounded in the name of statin marketing. My Doctor was really angry when I asked if he invested and if he owned stock in any of the pharmaceutical companies that produce statins and their was no **** way that I was going to take any more.
I guess the moral of my story - don;t be afraid to tell your doctor he/she is crazy. Lol

This is the scary thing of living in a small rural area where most of the doctors rely on outdated studies funded by the pharmaceutical industry. It's also so important for us diabetics to make the final decision on any advise provided by a doctor. Like any profession there's the accomplished and informed and then there's the dullards. In my life time I have only met at most 2 doctors who seemed to be up with the times. I suspect it's like that every where in the world but maybe some places are worse than others. Why on earth would the GP think lowering cholesterol levels 'as low as possible' makes sense.
