Do statins affect your bs levels mine seem to go up after taking mine . i take 40mg atervastatin

I'm on atervastatin as well. I haven't noticed as only on 10mg. But then I'm also on another med that can increase my blood sugar so it's possible the statin could also be impacting as well.

Yes I was on Propranolol for a year which can cause hyperglycaemia and hopefully explained the scary scary numbers during the summer.

I"m not on statins so no idea. Do you really have to be on them though? ..... There are many learned theories saying cholesterol's not a bad thing ..... I think they are only of benefit once you have a heart attack.

With a little online research, it seems they can - https://www.google.co.uk/#safe=strict&q=statins+blood+sugar

I was on statins briefly - my cholesterol levels were normal but my doctor wrote me a prescription saying because I was type 1 he wanted to lower my cholesterol level to as low as possible. So I got the prescription filled and everything changed - my legs felt week, I lacked energy and my BGs were difficult to control. So I stopped taking them - feel much better and my cholesterol levels are sill in the mid range of normal. It was an easy decision to make - be satisfied with normal cholesterol or be one of the walking wounded in the name of statin marketing. My Doctor was really angry when I asked if he invested and if he owned stock in any of the pharmaceutical companies that produce statins and their was no **** way that I was going to take any more.

I guess the moral of my story - don;t be afraid to tell your doctor he/she is crazy. Lol

Why on earth would the GP think lowering cholesterol levels 'as low as possible' makes sense. Cholesterol is needed by the body as part of it's repair mechanism. These guys need to do some learning before they dish out pills.

They would loose their freebie golf weekends!

Yes, statins are well known for raising blood glucose, and the last stats I saw suggested that about 4% of statin users develop diabetes as a result of taking statins.

If you have a look in the leaflet inside the statin packaging, you should find a list of contraindications. The glucose raising effect should be listed there (although not the 4% thing, because that info came from a different source, which I am trying desperately to remember! :) )

I stopped taking my statins a while ago - and my glucose levels suddenly improved - after over a year low carbing which had got my levels well down, but stalled at a higher level than I's hoped for. It took me a little while to realise that it was the statins as I'd also stopped needing long term corticosteroid eye drops around the same time. But a bit of research eventually told me that while oral corticosteroids will raise glucose levels the eye drops apparently don't!

PS @asparagusp - I've taken propranolol for years for chronic migraines and have never had any problems with it since I've been diabetic. Weird isn't it!

This is the scary thing of living in a small rural area where most of the doctors rely on outdated studies funded by the pharmaceutical industry. It's also so important for us diabetics to make the final decision on any advise provided by a doctor. Like any profession there's the accomplished and informed and then there's the dullards. In my life time I have only met at most 2 doctors who seemed to be up with the times. I suspect it's like that every where in the world but maybe some places are worse than others.

When I started taking them my hba1c rose from 48 at diagnosis to 54. Since coming off them my hba1c has been in the normal range so I would say yes!

Since reading the news feed on the home page of this site I have been doing some reading on Statins. I think this article covers all the points I found http://articles.mercola.com/sites/a...-reasons-why-you-should-not-take-statins.aspx

On top of all that information the news reel says statins increase the liklihood of getting Parkinsons! My mum's brother has Parkinsons.

So why would the diabetic nurse spend so much time covering my cholesterol and calculating I would have a 14.13% chance of having a stroke in the next 10 years if I was not diabetic and have a higher chance because I am? She only covered the Paternal line in her questioning.

I found out yesterday my chol is 5.9

I often thought that too, once levels are in range do we need to take them I wondered?

Not so sure you ever "need" to take them. It's a matter of personal choice and mine is never.

It was part of the medication rolled out when I was diagnosed, I didnt know better & as we all do our research in the ime that follows and adjust out diets etc.. I dont think I need them, the nurses seem to think I do. I was 141 hba1c on diagnosis and now Im 45, 3 years later. To be honest now my diet has changed, I feel like a new bloke and Im so tired of taking tablets (I should imagine there are many, many in my boat!)

So there's nothing stopping you taking them? you haven't had a cardiovascular event or anything like that which they may be helping?

No that's true, I've had no issues at all and aside of my being type 2 diabetic and having a spot on bmi I'm in good health. Part of me felt I must be on them for a reason and that something untoward would happen if I stopped

As stated above my statin therapy (eztimibe) started about 8 years ago when diagnosed type 2. over the years my memory or lack of it became a standing joke. then June 2015 when researching LCHF I stumbled across the link between poor cognition and statins. That June I started LCHF and ditched the statin. it took about 12 months for my cognition to come back to where it was. My doctor tried to tell me what I was doing was damaging to my health. to put it bluntly 'I lost my ****' and gave it him both barrels telling him over the last 8 years his medication was hindering my health in fact it was borderline criminal. He now does what I say lest he gets a well deserved slap! I'm sure its not just me that is annoyed at how easy (LCHF) it is to control this disease. I have lost years that the NHS 'owes' me for.
