Statins

Why does my Type 2 husband have to go on a statin? He is 75, not overweight, nonsmoker, non drinker, active, eats quite healthy. Hba1c in range. His cholesterol was 4.5. She never asked him what he ate or how active he was, just adamant that he goes on it.

Whereas me, Type 1, overweight, with a result of 4.8 (on statins), is not pulled up on it? GP thinks 4.8 is satisfactory??

Your husband doesn’t have to go on stains, it’s his decision to make not the GP’s. Encourage him to do his homework and then make an informed decision that he is happy with.

I am 76 and know I have been type 2 for 16years, I have had no objection to statins, especially when the GP practice's nurse said that all the nurses and GPs took statins. (All were 50 ;plus).

Some years ago, I suggested that my husband, also 76, took aspirin and statins, but he refused and I do wonder if the present situation would be different if he had agreed. Last month, he had a stroke and was diagnosed as type 2 with high readings that we are struggling to lower. The GP has said that he is doing fine, as medication has to be advanced gently , but I am quite shocked as I have never had readings like that, because I was just diet and exercise for many years. He now has to have statins and clopidogrel.

I suggested that my husband, now 76, started on statins and aspirin, a few years back, but he refused.

Statins can have a huge effect on susceptible people.
My brother in law was put on a statin for no reason other than the GP though it was a good idea.
My sister mourns for the life they had, the conversations, the activities and holidays they had. Her husband sits and watches TV.
