I am thirsty a lot but can’t find anything to quench my thirst. I only drink sparkling water and I find diet soft drinks leave a taste in my mouth. It’s driving me mad! Can anyone suggest what I can drink?? Thank you!

HI @Jakoushka and welcome to the forums.

I see from your previous post that you are newly diagnosed and haven't been given any advice from your GP (other than metformin)?

If you like sparkling water maybe add a slice of lemon to spice it up?

But I am wondering if you are extra thirsty because your blood sugars are high? (Thirst is a symptom of high blood sugars). Do you know what your hba1c was when you were diagnosed?

Hi Ellie, thanks for your reply. I have no idea what my numbers were. I had bloods done for something else and when I went for results was told that they were concerned about my high levels but that’s all the info I got. ‍

In your position I'd want to know my levels, both for future reference and to know "how diabetic" I was. I'd suggest asking for an hba1c, or better yet getting online access to your results so that you can see for yourself.

As regards tackling the T2 yourself, a lot of folk here have success with diet, specifically by reducing carbs, but I'll let some T2 posters elaborate on that :)

Try black tea, herb teas, black coffee (or add a little double cream). Add a couple of squashed raspberries or cucumber or fresh mint with a squirt of lemon juice to cold water.
And do cut down on sugar and other carbs (all of which can be converted to sugar in your body).

I bought a meter to check what I could safely eat, testing before and 2hrs after every meal at first. It's the only way to make sure if you are eating too many carbs.
There are lots of recipes for low carb meals around.

You are right, Ellie. I think I was in a daze after the news. I'm making an appointment next week. Thanks for your help!

Hi @Jakoushka and thanks for the tag @EllieM

Here’s some info on UK meters, and to be clear I have no commercial connections with any of the companies mentioned.

HOME HEALTH have the Gluco Navii, which is a fairly new model and seems to be getting good reviews if you use this link and select the meter plus 5 packs of strips, and then add the code dcuk (all lower case) at check out you may get money off, I’m not sure if this code is still valid.

https://homehealth-uk.com/all-produ...ose-meter-test-strips-choose-mmol-l-or-mg-dl/

Links to the strips for future orders:

https://homehealth-uk.com/all-products/glucose-navii-blood-glucose-test-strips-50-strip-pack/

There are also discount codes for when you come to buy more strips - "navii5" and "navii10" will give you 20% off purchases of 5 packs of strips and 25% off 10 packs of strips respectively. Again I’m not sure if these codes are still valid.

Then they sell the older SD Code Free, details to be found here!

Discount codes for the Code Free strips, again I haven’t used them in a while.

5 packs 264086

10 packs 975833

SPIRIT HEALTHCARE have a meter called the Tee2 + which is quite popular however I haven’t been able to find it on their website lately.

(Old link which doesn’t work for me now but maybe works for you, if it doesn’t try the phone number below

https://shop.spirit-health.co.uk/co...e2-blood-glucose-meter?variant=19264017268793 ) or Google it and you’ll find it’s available from other outlets.

The strips are to be found here:

https://shop.spirit-health.co.uk/co...py-of-tee2-test-strips?variant=19264017367097

Some members have got a free Tee2+ by phoning up to order, with a large order of strips they often throw the meter in for free:

Phone number 0800 8815423

If there is a choice of units of measurement then ‘mmol/L’ are the standard units in the UK, ‘mg/dl’ in the US, other countries may vary.

Don’t forget to check the box if you have pre diabetes or diabetes so you can buy VAT free. (for all meters and strips)

Hello and welcome to the forum @Jakoushka

I agree with the advice to get a meter. A meter gives you immediate information about your levels and allows you to know what effect different foods have on your levels. This allows you to make decisions about what to eat.

In terms of drinks adding lemon or lime or cucumber may help vary the taste a bit. If it's hot drinks you're after there's tea or coffee (I add cream to mine rather than milk for less carbs).

It terms of soda drink- different diet ones have different sweeteners which may effect the taste so may be worth experimenting but I do like sparkling mineral water myself.

Welcome and good luck
