Supplements

The only thing I take is omega 3 which was suggested by my GP for my osteoarthritis but I really dont agree with taking all these vitamins nd things!

I don't mean to be rude, but if you don't agree with taking supplements then don't, it's simple really. Those of us who have tried them have posted results, and for us they work, if they don't we stop them. I'm not sure why it's such a big deal, they are all on store shelves and perfectly legal.

I think it is wrong to introduce to many new things at once. How on Earth does anyone know which ones are working, and which ones are doing nothing? Also, even natural therapy`s can interact in weird ways. Where are you finding the information to make sure that isn`t the case, and they are safe to take with any other medication?

Going back through the list here are the ones I know work based on meter readings and how I feel

Bitter Melon - YES (spike control)
Cinnamon - YES (fasting levels)
Gymnema * - YES (appetite suppressant mostly)
Banaba * - YES (spike control)
Vitamin B12 - ? but MW says it worked for her.
Vitamin D - ? but as I get nowhere near the amount of sunlight I should....
Omega 3 - ?
50+ Multi Vitamin & Minerals - ? Statin protection
Chromium Picolinate - ? (supposed to be good for diabetics)
Chelated Manganese - ? (supposed to be good for diabetics)
Potassium Citrate - YES had a deficiency don't anymore
Biotin - ? (supposed to be good for diabetics)

* currently stopped
+ on order

Meds

Metformin - YES
Simvastatin - YES
Ramiprill - YES

I will probably give up loads if the gp confirms I can come of the Statin and others as they run out and see if there are any noticeable effects on my levels . I will keep with the Bitter Melon and Cinnamon as they are working without question in my case.[/quote]

+1 I agree.

I have added Vitamin C and also Calcium, magnesium and zinc to my collection. They can't harm, but may help so why not try?

MH takes one of those fizzy multi-vits every day, but I take Moringa which is like an A-Z multi-vit. I've also added another one (not arrived yet) to help me monthly. It's called Dong Quai (pronounced donkey.....!) I'm not due a blood test for my HT until July - can't wait to see it it'll be any different!

Ju

Multi vitamin with iron.
2 x Vitamin B complex.
6 x 200mcg chromium
2 x Gingo Bilboa
6 x 300 mg Psyllium husk

8 x 30/500 Co-Codamol
Frusemide
Duloexitine
Quinine
Lanzeprazole
4 x 500mg Metformin
30 mg Amitryptiline
occasional extra codeine 30mg or morphine 10mg.

I keep knocking off the supplements - glucosamine, fish oils and others. I take iodine if I cut myself as I take soooo long to heal  , but not otherwise. When I have a protein drink for a meal I always add flaxseed powder and try to have fish at least 3 times a week.

Regular supplements:

Vit D3 - 4500 IU in wiinter, 2500 IU in summer. Managed to get a test out of my GP last time round, and my levels coming out of winter were very good but still in the acceptable range, so I don't seem to be OD'ing.

Magnesium (citrate) - 150mg 3x daily. To lower blood pressure and essential for Vit D/calcium metabolism. No problems with it. Excess is excreted if you take much too much, sometimes quite violently  I'm off BP meds now.

Occasionally:

Fish oil sometimes;or flax-seed oil.
Just finishing a Vit B complex course.
Multivitamin & mineral - a month's course in about February every year
Zinc the same - for a month in early spring. I'm thinking of making that a regular - it makes a notable difference to my hair and nails.

I don't take extra Vit C since I stopped smoking, and I don't take extra Calcium. My diet is good in terms of Vit C (salad veg etc) and calcium (dairy and broccoli). Excess Vit C is simply excreted, and I have heard that too much calcium can form nodules in the heart muscle. Maybe Phoenix can hlep with that? - I don't wish to alarm anyone. I don't have osteoporosis.

Medically, I take Levothyroxine, 100mg per day; Nortriptyline, 20mg at bedtime for nerve pain; Volsaid Retard 75mg (anti-inflammatory) once or twice a day as needed; Metformin 500mg, 3 times daily. I also have antihistamines and a Symbicort inhaler, to use as and if needed; usually only in spring.

I'm thinking about adding in a daily aspirin. I'd be interested in hearing other people's views on that.

I live in the country (all pastoral), so the only real pollutant around here is slurry-spreading

I can give you my own experience with a daily aspirin Viv. My treadmill arrived a week last Friday, withing 2 minutes of walking the pain in both calves was unbearable. I popped a post up here asking for advice. As always people offered help. One piece of advice was to take a daily aspirin. Just low dose 75mg one, so I decided to give it a try. I ordered some, and as soon as they arrived I took one. From that day to this, I have not had a single pain in my legs, not even a small amount. In allowing me to exercise again, they are a wonder drug. I know they thin the blood, and that is reflected in my prick tests, as I do bleed slightly more, but not excessively. I am so happy to now be able to walk, without the crippling pain in my legs. Obviously they don't help the joint pain, but I have medication for that, but the muscle pain is gone.

I would say try and see, but as I was warned be careful as they can cause tummy problems. I take one Lansoprazole a day, so my tummy is fine.

Thanks for that, Defren, I think I'll give it a go. If it helps with leg muscle pains it may help me to get walking again. I think my stomach is up to it, particularly if I make sure I take them with food.

The surgery has recently tried to change me over from Volsaid to Naproxen on the grounds it would be better for my stomach - by the time I was on 1000mg twice a day and couldn't stand to clean my teeth because of back pain, I demanded my Volsaid back  . And got them, I may add! I've declined stomach protection so far because I haven't needed anything.

I just want to add to my supplement list

CoQ10
Organic Selenium.

I also changed my Vitamin B12 to B complex with extra B12.

Has anyone tried turmeric? It's supposed to be an anti-inflammatory and an anti- to just about every condition known to man!

I got some off e-bay and am taking 2 a day, with food. They're 500mg per capsule, and the powder is turmeric-coloured but for all I know could be powdered camel-dung  . Does anyone know of a "reputable" supplier who sells it? I'm not suggesting the supplier of these capsules is disreputable, and they have a good e-bay record, but . . .!

I don't know whether they're working, but my back's reasonably okay at the moment, even after gardening.

I honestly wouldn't like to say Viv. I buy all my supplements either from Amazon or Holland and Barrett. I think it's a case of you pays your money and takes your chance, but if they are from a UK supplier, then I think I would feel relatively safe. That said, I did get some Gymnema from the US and things stayed stable when I changed from my UK suppliers brand to the US brand, so perhaps I was lucky, or maybe both lots were camel dung.

Is there no way of taking the spice itself ? Other than eating curry every day that is  At least you would know it wasnt camel dung cos it would smell different

Nope. Most of it is just Snake Oil.

100% agree Stephen, like phoenix, fresh food for me too and sunshine when its available. I have recently started taking a cod liver oil capsule once a day to see if it will help with my arthritis although I have been told to expect to wait for two years before seeing any result

Not saying it will make a difference but my gp told me to take it in the liquid form and use a high strength one at that.

No problem. MW has suffered from arthritic type pain for many years and takes Ibuprofen and other pain killers as well. Ibuprofen is an anti inflammatory but she was advised to limit this for other reasons hence why we looked for other alternatives.
