Hello

I am a new member and recently diagnosed.
What were your symptoms prior to diagnosis of T2 diabetes and how high was your initial hbaic?
Thanks

General malaise, neuropathy, leg blistering.

My initial hba1c was 88 iirc, but that was a after I had diagnosed myself and had already switched to low carb a week or two before.

None that I identified at the time, I only went for the test becuase my sisters diagnosis and my age put me into higher risk category.

With hindsight though, the incipient weight gain and frequency of peeing were signs I'd put down to a age, gender, menopause and genes.
I love it now they are gone!

I had no symptoms of diabetes. I did have gestational diabetes and was told I’d probably have it later in life. A few years later I had thrush twice and must have had a blood test and then diagnosed with it.

I’ve now been diagnosed twice (don’t go back to old ways of eating folks!).

The first time the main symptom was unbelievable thirst and then frequent urination, including during the night. I was also getting painful leg cramps.

The second time the urination was there but not the thirst to the same degree. But I was falling asleep a lot just sitting on the train or the sofa but oddly I hadn’t had a full night of unbroken sleep in months. My eyes were also quite blurry and irritated.

Basically 40 odd years of HCPs going ballistic at me for putting on weight and being resistant to losing on low calorie low fat diets but feeling a lot better on those really dangerous faddy ways of eating as proposed by quacks like Dr Atkins.
My Hba1c was 91 at diagnosis.

Hi Louloudi,

My first symptoms, which I didn't see as symptoms, were peeing too often (but with no perceptible thirst) plus sleeping after (carb-heavy) meals.

It wasn't until I had pins and needles down one leg and arm that I went to see the GP. She ordered an HBA1C test, which came back at 68.

Welcome to the forums.

Nothing that I could put down to diabetes until it was diagnosed while in hospital for something else. Then coming here and learning so much that would have alerted me.

Despite dedicated dental care, high tartar buildup on teeth. Nothing now my BG is under control. Who knew? Not my dentist or hygienist (though both now very interested).

Huge weight gain despite eating carefully all those "healthy" foods that aren't healthy for diabetics. Easy to blame the menopause.

Very tired all the time. Sleeping badly despite that. As above.

All good now that BG is controlled. Wish I had been aware years ago.

My initial hb1ac was 106 and I'd no systems of diabetes (and still don't).

Extreme fatigue, non-alcoholic fatty liver disease, moodswings (have those anyway, but I was all over the place and a right dragon!), depression, frequent urination, wounds that never healed, yeast infections, etc, etc, etc.

I don't know what my HbA1c was initially, because I'd already started low carbing by the time the first one was done, based on very high post prandials, but with 20+ after a meal, it was likely quite high. Once I got done it was 75-ish, after another month or so it was 42. Been in the 30's since then.

Oedema, liquid oozing through my skin, blistering, bullae, cuts not healing, urinary retention/ kidney problems, blurred vision, "tissue paper" skin, leg reddening, xerostomia, weight gain (resulting in gout and apnoea), neuropathy in feet, constipation, tiredness - that's what I recall at the moment. Over a period of about 12 years while I was not at "official" diabetic blood glucose levels. Diagnosed (eventually) with an A1c of 50.

Nothing really at all in symptoms other than my skin had been itching for a while for which I was taking anti-histamine. GP decided to do a blood test - A1c was 53. After diagnosis, I realised that my eyes were also blurry however as I got my sugars under control, the blurriness went away.

Pretty much the full monty then.

I only had an HbA1c of 49, but was sometimes very tired at work especially after lunch, had skin tags on my face and neck, scratches on my hand that didn't heal, weight gain, a lot of hunger.

I didn't have any symptoms, though since I was already being tested regularly after my triple bypass, I was only just into the diabetic range.

In fact I think a lot (perhaps most) of us have no symptoms even if the HBA1C turns out to be quite high!

None and 56. It was a chance diagnosis after one of my cats bit me and the walk-in found I had high blood pressure. My GP had bloods done and that was what came back.

None, 75 mmol/mol.

A1c was 110 at diagnosis, but I'd had my head in the sand for years

By the time I went to the Dr's I had - constantly painful feet (neuropathy), frequent urination, thirst, tiredness/lethergy, blurred vision, slow healing and the dreaded ED.

Best to catch it early if you can and get it sorted. The longer you leave it, the worse things can get.

75 at diagnosis. It was always on the cards due to family history but after having COVID and being quite unwell the symptoms developed. I had lost weight with COVID and had started to put it on again for a couple of weeks then it started dropping again without me trying. Up and down but I lost about 5 or 6kg from the end of October to the end of May at diagnosis. I was tired by mid afternoon and wanting a nap (just in time for my son to get home from school) and there was a bit of an increase in thirst and urination but nothing major. Maybe the odd cut taking a while to heal.

Any of those complications resolve?
