An awful lot.
A question for a T2 friend of mine and his T1 wife And please feel free to scream at the wonderful NHS but it is par for the course in this area....Things will change for them we have had a long chat he may even read this..

On my suggestion they are going to get their HBa1c never had one and then go see the DN (we are at the same surgery but they never told him they had one, sent him to the hospital for 1x clinic at diagnosis) He was just given metformin and told take those 3xs a day.
Did desmond (same idiots l went to) has not really sorted his diet, doesn't really bother diet thanks to desmond misinformation and has a lot of stress at home.

His wife was diagnosed t1 around 2 years ago probably from antidepressants and takes her bloods only 2xs a day, told that was all she needed and been on same insulin since diagnosed in morning and night. Oh and she hasn't been seen l think for about a year, as she was in hospital and didn't go to her last dr appointment they told her they will send for her next year neither of them have seen the poddy.

OK when you have calmed down about the wonderful treatment they have had.....

My question regards him he has pins and needles in his fingers and arm. Assuming it is neuropathy starting can he halt and or reverse it with massive diet change.

My question for his Mrs she is VERY overweight but surely T1 are thin could she be a 1.5 is it worth her trying for a GAD test? Given the appalling treatment they could well have screwed up.

Hi. If the Mrs is very much overweight she may be having too many carbs and insulin to match or perhaps she is actually a T2? I think you are confused about T1 versus T1.5? T1.5 is essentially T1 but late onset. If she is was diagnosed as a T1 later in life then she should have had a GAD test at diagnosis so I would ask how she was diagnosed as a T1?

Grrrr comes to mind. It's a shame they've been so let down.

She should definitely be testing more than that if she's a type 1 (not to say she shouldn't be testing more than twice if she's a type 2) and if she drives then she needs to test before she drives too.

Type 1s can be overweight too.

I don't know a lot about the tests so I can't really advise, but I think it would be worth asking for a GAD test if she can.

I hope someone else can be more helpful than me!!

Many thanks for the help will tell him re carbs. Testing is going up a lot as per our chat last night
I dont know a lot about 1.5 so was more a general query...and no to does she drive. l will get them to check on GAD.

many thanks :-)

To be honest, more queries are based on being diagnosed as a type 2 wrongly...and being a mody or lada or type 1. If Mrs is overweight, then she can be a type 1 but just doesnt exercise enough or over eats or has some other thing lime thyroid imbalance.

If Mrs is on a set regime then she needs to see a consultant ir dsn before altering her lifestyle, itherwise she could have hypo's. Uf she is on a mixed insulin, changing lifestyle foods and exercise is harder to do.
She really needs to have a referral to a dsn for a full annual check up, so does Mr. They should be having a minimum of their feet being checked, eye screening and blood tests and pressure. A podiatrist isn't standard unless there is a need to see one.

No reason you can't be a T1 and fat, or a T2 and scrawny.

One of my neighbours is a T1, went on a pump around a year go and has put on massive amounts of weight.

Teh insulin allows you to eat whatever you want, or if you overdose, needs you to eat to match it. Very easy to put on weight

Yup have stressed needs to see dsn get all tests and make a sensible ongoing plan.
Only thing l have said do from now up hugely the bg tests to each meal and any time she or he feels ill so can see what is going on when.

The pins and needles in his arm and hand may not be neuropathy starting, could be carpal tunnel syndrome. Diabetes is one of the things mentioned as making you susceptible to it

Quick update... both friends due DN checks in next couple of weeks. Doing lots of testing, eating better.

T1 had a hypo last Tuesday and has felt her self slipping down into depression again. The important thing is she had taken her bs so had proof of hypo and really important told her Psych Nurse about it who promptly said am not surprised you are going downwards if you had a hypo...it knocks the body chemistry out. Finally a medical person who has agreed to the link.although so far only one Dr has partially acknowledged a link between depression and diabetes. l pointed out with the PN on her side treat the drs as idiots you have to see and the PN as gold dust :-)

The friends are going to get the data cable and do print outs to start charting moods up/down etc to get tie ins to affect on depression. It wont really count for far back as until we had our chat she was only doing them 2xs a day but last 3 weeks onwards it is going to be a good tool.
