There is some recent research suggesting stomach hormones are activated by "sugar free" sweetners that have a debilitating impact on BS as well as continuing the addictive stronghold centres within the brain, which is already established science.

Hey guys I've once talked to a diabetic about coke zero. And she told me a strange thing , she told me that pepsi light affects her blood sugar and cola zero doesn't. For me both of drinks dont do anyhing to my b/s

You can also buy products with natural sweeteners in it. Some barely contain any sugars, but you have to be carefull as others do like the green coco cola drink for example. From what I have heard they are ''better'' than ártificial sweeteners, but as with everything, moderation is the best you can do.

I would say as with everything in moderation. Ok to have one now and again say if you are out socialising with friends but not good to drink it every day there is nothing in it that is good for you and it can be addictive.

Hi

I have to admit I am totally addicted to diet coke, it has no affect on my bms, however I do no its ingredients aren't particularly good for you. I got hooked when I was pregnant with my first child when EVERYTHING else made me throw up, I was exactly the same with further pregnancies. I have tried to break the addiction but it does actually make you feel really ill! :(

Just to add, coke zero is very like diet coke in that it is zero sugars but uses artificial sweetner. The coke life (green bottle) uses a natural sweetner (I think stevia) but does have added sugars as well, so although the sweetners used are better for you, the added sugar isn't! x

Ok I have to agree with all that has been said here. First off zero sugars and zero carbs should in theory make no difference and therefore in diabetic terms are better. However that is about where the benefits end. I read somehwere a few years ago (and for the ilfe of me I could not tell what the source is now, although I have a suspicion as to where) that when you ingest sweetners the body reacts in exactly the same way that it does with sugar i.e. releasing insulin due to senseing something sweet, however when the sweetners enter the blood stream they are not recognized as needing to be processed by insulin so therefore more insulin floats around in the blood stream, contributing to insulin resistance (NOTE: I said contributing, not causing!). Having said that as the occaisional treat rather than a regular consumption I cannot see a problem with consuming such.

The monolithic statement that "Artificial Sweeteners cause an insulin increase" seems to be sweeping and not correct. If you have a read through, the studies that are linked in Mark's Daily Apple, essentially only Acesulfame K shows an insulin response and even then, it hasn't been shown to happen with orally consumed versions of this sugar substitute, only in vitro in the presence of glucose and via infusion.

I think it will take a bit more than an artificial sweetner to convince my beta cells to produce any insulin...

Thank you, I shall read that. It was a few years ago that I read it so research etc could have moved on by now. I just wish I could remember who the source was originally...

Of course nothing is better than water, but nobody can live like a monk all of the time.
Any diet drink, Diet Coke, Coke Zero, all the other zeros etc are more than fine as long as you don't just solely drink them & nothing else. They save me on many an occasion when i need something sweet :)

I wanted to drink something good without caring about carbs. I tried Cola Zero and it doesn't do anything with my b/s level so far. But my dad sometimes tells me that it is rubbish and I should not drink it. What do you guys think about this?
I have not had any issues regarding Coke Zero. Or any of the light/zero range of drinks. My favourite is Diet Irn Bru. Fanta zero is refreshing and Lucozade have a new range of zero drinks too. The only thing i find is that they tend to go flat quickly, other than that as mentioned in another reply pepsi max and coke zero both keep me awake at night if im drinking them around 9pm onwards...

I find it astonishing that in this day and age people still don't know that any cola drink is nothing but chemicals and poisons. Your father is correct. One now and again won't hurt though.

Not good for two reasons:

1. Still feeds to sugar addictive part of your brain

2. Sugar free has been shown to trigger stomach hormones which have a debilitating impact on Blood glucose stability and BP




Diagnosed 13/4/16: T2, no meds, HbA1c 53, FBG 12.6, Trigs 3.6, HDL .75, LDL 4.0, BP 169/95, 13st 8lbs, waist 34" (2012 - 17st 7lbs, w 42").

2/6/16: FBG AV 4.6, Trigs 1.5, HDL 2.0, LDL 3.0, BP 120/72, 11st 11lbs, waist 30" (2012 - 17st 7lbs, w 42").

Regime: 20g LCHF, run 1 mile daily, weekly fasting.

4/6/16: Best BP 112/64....yeah!!

Coke Zero is not a healthy drink and it doesn't do anything good for you. As an occasional treat is fine, but its very easy to fall into a habit of drinking it on a daily basis. I know something about this, needed coke zero rehab!
Ah I use your baking website! Made Lemon sponge with soya flour and it was delicious! Are you planning in adding more recipes? They are lovely & looking for new ones to try. Thanks,

Seriously? Don't be so ridiculous. It wouldn't be permitted for sale if it contained "chemicals and poisons". The ingredients in diet drink products may not be particularly health-promoting but they are certainly safe in limited quantities. Scare mongering like that is not helpful. What's astonishing is that in this day and age people think that these products are so unsafe.
