T2 insulin dependent

Good evening,

I'm new here, but not new to diabetes. I'm T2, and have been for about 10 years. Medication didn't do much, so I was put on insulin early on. I take Toujeo and Novorapid. I was also on Ozempic until it became scarce, so my GP has removed it for the time being. Trying to balance my bloods on just insulin alone is interesting to say the least. I'm extremely insulin resistant, and the only support I get from my diabetic nurse (who I've only spoken to on the phone and not seen in person since lockdown) is to continue upping my insulin. Downside... Weight gain. I have lots to lose, and I'm trying very hard. I'm on week 2 of low carb, and I'm slowly coming down from mid 20's to teens. I saw 12mmol today for the first time in a while. Five years ago I would have been horrified at 12!
I'm quite active for a middle aged exceptionally fat lass. Hubby, dog and I live on a narrowboat which keeps me active. We walk lots, so I'm hoping to increase that along with lowering the carbs further, and find some happy balance where I'm not injecting huge amounts of insulin all the time!
I've been lurking here and it seems like an informative and helpful place

Welcome to the forums @BoatieBird
It sounds like you are doing as much as you can to control your diabetes. Just curious, given that you were put on insulin early on, did you ever get the tests (gad and cpeptide) to determine whether you are LADA/T1 rather than T2?

T1s can be insulin resistant too and it does make a difference to know whether your issue is just insulin resistance or lack of insulin as well.

@EllieM thank you!
I asked years ago and was advised that theres no need. My weight allegedly indicates that I'm a T2 candidate!
I will bring it up again as it's been a long time!

Welcome to the forums. I live close to the Leeds-Liverpool so you may have been past my house?

Being fat or insulin resistant does not protect you in any way from an autoimmune condition like T1.
I was diagnosed as a T2 almost 7 years ago (I fit the picture at 39 years old with a BMI of around 36 and most of it around my mid section) and rediagnosed as T1 two years later.

Hello and welcome @BoatieBird

I must say I think living on a narrow boast sounds interesting. It must present different challenges that I wouldn't even be able to guess at.

I hope you can find all the support and advice you need here. :) I'm a fellow type 2 but not on any medication so not able to really provide much useful advice. There are many more here with greater expertise.

Good luck and welcome :)
