Tax on red meat and bacon??


What a beautiful animal.
 
My cat eats grass, then pukes it up on the carpet. She only ever eats bics so is a bicuitarian
 
Not so long ago a peasant was prosecuted (or persecuted.) for "poaching" the "kings deer." Not such a new idea....

killing swans in some parts of the uk is also still a capital offence I believe.
Edit: this 12th century law was repealed in 1998 and it is no longer treason, Mute swans are a protected species so it is a criminal act to kill or keep them,

It would make Robin of Loxley turn over in his grave, what happens if you take one of the Queens plurry swans then?
 
If meat became really expensive I would be keeping chickens, rabbits - or perhaps quail - it would depend upon the food available. At a pinch I could grow trays of grass and other seeds to feed the rabbits.

That could be the start of a fun series of 'Big Brother'. Two teams, one vegan, one omnivore. Give them same area of land to work and see which develops nutritional deficiencies first. Urban vegans would probably just starve though. Some of the vegan dreams seem a bit like WW2 'Dig for Victory' propaganda. Cropping some currently idle land (like golf courses) might increase food production a bit, but not enough for self-sufficiency. Or at least not economic efficiency, ie the cost of trying to grow and harvest crops on marginal land like hillsides vs just letting sheep, cows, goats etc convert vegetation into tasty protein.
 
around here there is much land which is unsuitable for agriculture or housing and the sheep use it for grazing. Just a thought - what about the rights of the animals to roam freely and eat? if we basically wipe them out and take their grazing land for ourselves, how is that fair to the animals?

we have seen what humans have done to many species on this planet, do vegans support that behaviour? because increasing our green foods to feed us is going to involve more land grab from animals, and further extinctions. Not to mention the knock on effect on eco-systems.

and all that artificial fertilizer and pesticides, that will affect the insect life and water supply too.
 

I think that's where the politics get interesting. So Russia used to rely on US wheat, now it's modernised it's agriculture and doesn't. So Russia's now exporting and competing with the US. The US had lobbying by environmentalists (and agribusiness) to produce ethanol from corn. It's more expensive than fossil fuel and less efficient and means farms producing fuel rather than food. That has a knock-on effect on feed prices & meat. Then there's soybeans. US has had a record yield, but sanctions mean China isn't buying it. Or at least not directly.

So I guess if farmland currently dedicated to ethanol or soy were converted to producing other veg, a vegan world might be possible. But I'm not convinced it's any more sustainable than mixed agriculture. Claiming it'd save the planet also overlooks one possible reason why crops have been having record yields, namely the effect of higher CO2 levels. Plants need CO2 for photosynthesis, so seems rather foolish to want to get rid of it.

I suspect there will be a major movement to adopt a lamb/calf/bullock brigade and we will need larger pet shops. I get the impression that the political vegans care not a jot for animals, or the reality that there would be mass culling and pyres to make sure the newly acquired vegetable fields are no longer occupied by these hateful and dangerous beasts.

It is a sad fact of present day life that most domesticated animals only exist to provide us with food and clothes, or take up precious resources in zoos and safari parks. Even llamas and alpaccas will have to go. and camel farming will become despised as a redundant pleasure. I regret that these politicos are destructive in the name of animal protection. Not unheard of in mankind seeing all those religious wars sadly. My cause is bigger than your cause,and I will fight you for disagreeing with me.

Now, for the UK, I'd also need to occupy a few large greenhouses I think.

Are Triffids suitable fare for a vegan????? We will be allowed to die from hypothermia because we will not have wool or leather or sheepskins (Verboten in Vegan Land) and we will have run out of raw materials to make synthetic clothing to compensate. Also with high healthy world population levels, sex will be banned so cuddling up together for warmth will also be discouraged.
 
I hope animal activists such as Peta etc. eat yellow cake so they glow in the dark to make hunting them easier.

My point is that they need to turn those ethanol fields into fields to grow food for humans. The figures being bandies about concerning available agricultural land for feeding us new vegans include all the fields currently being used for biofuel crops.

Cane farmers regularly change what vegies they plant to rest a cane paddock, ranges from sweet potatoes, cabbage etc.

Some cane farmers have stopped growing cane completely and have given the land over to macadamia nut and avocado growing.

Here's a short video clip put out by the local council and the growers.
