Test Strips

Being Diagnosed with Type 2 Diabetes My Sister was given a Accutest glucose teste and test strips. She has controlled her diabetes very well and requested more test strips from the GP practice Nurse and was refused these and told to buy her own test strips, the mete also went faulty and when a replacement was requested was again refused one as her Blood Glucose readings were ok. I being a type 2 diabetic believe these items are Free on prescription. Is her GP Nurse correct in refusing these items.

Type 2 diabetics do not normally get meters or strips prescribed on the NHS it is at the discretion of your GP most T2's have to self fund unfortunately.

T2's usually only get a meter and strips if they have medication/insulin which can cause hypo's. And even then it's a bit of an arm-wrestle, sometimes. If she's only on metformin, it's not likely to happen. I, and many here, self-fund.

You will be very lucky to get a prescribed meter and strips. I've always paid for mine ( the meter came free) and my pharmacy under-charge me for strips.

I have to buy my own now although a few years ago the GP practice gave me a metre with test strips on prescription. Last week my GP actually told me I shouldn’t be testing and just rely on hba1c results. I told him he was being ridiculous as I could be damaging my kidneys, eyes and liver in the mean time! Silly GP

I have to pay my own way too as a T2, but I've had a couple of free meters from the suppliers and it's possible to get your test strips VAT deducted as a diabetic.

Some strips are cheaper than others and @Rachox has a list of lower priced options.

If there is a choice of units of measurement then ‘mmol/L’ are the standard units in the UK, ‘mg/dl’ in the US, other countries may vary.

Gluco Navii is very good, the starter kit contains everything you need and the strips etc are fairly reasonable compared to some others. I was told on diagnosis in 2018 not to test as not necessary for type 2s and NICE recommendations are that it isnt necessary therefore not readily available on the NHS. I bought the gluco navii from Home health, you get VAT free if diabetic. Testing is invaluable so its worth the cost
