tingles

  does anyone else suffer from constant tingles in the hands developing into pins n needled and sometimes cramp??

That's why I went to the Dr 8 years ago - with the tingling/numbness sensation in my right thigh. Dr said it was indicative of diabetes, & confirmed it with blood tests.

That sensation hasn't gone away, & the right thigh is the first place to react to problems - particularly to muscle pain as a side effect of simvastatin - which I gave up. The effects are particularly noticeable on waking, when I have been lying still.

When do you notice the effect, & how severe is it?

IMHO, good blood sugar control is the best way forward.

The tingling sounds like an early symptom of neuropathy, a classic complication of diabetes, and cramps can also be a symptom. The good news is that if the diabetes is well controlled and your BG is low enough then the cramps should subside and the tingling shouldn't get any worse. The bad news is that if the tingling is indeed neuropathy then that consists of damaged nerves, and these tend not to recover very well (or at all). Even if you manage to completely normalize your BG, the nerves will still be damaged. There is some suggestion that Alpha Lipoic Acid (ALA) can reduce the symptoms of diabetic neuropathy, and you can get capsules of this in health food shops - it might be worth trying.

When exactly is this happening? Do you ,for instance lean on your elbows a lot at work? Is it first thing in the morning when you get up.

Sue has a good point! Just because you are diabetic doesn't mean you should jump to the conclusion that every ache and pain is due to the diabetes. Tingling in your hands could easily be an early sign of diabetic neuropathy, but equally well it could be many other things (RSI springs to mind - especially if you spend a lot of time in front of a computer). You do need to talk about this to your doctor.

I have had a lot of tingling and numbness in my fingers - mainly my little and ring fingers of my right hand.
As Sue suggested this is due to problems with, in my case, the ulnar nerve. I had some Nerve Conduction tests which showed that there is no peripheral neuropathy, which I was worried about in case it was due to my diabetes. Just too much leaning on my elbows and sleeping with my arms folded tightly up against my body :-)

I hope your tingling turns out to be as minor a problem as mine - now that I'm trying not to do the things that cause the problem ;-)

hi, i would like anyone's opinion on my situation please, i have been type 1 diabetic now for 34 years & over the last 12months my control(ha ha ha) has been very unstable & i have developed retinopathy& neuropathy wether that is due to my control over 12 months or over 34 years i do not no. I have had spells where i haven't looked after myself to which i hold my hands up to but considering over the years i have only been admitted to hospital once (Oct 08) with DKA i think ive done really well. Anyhow back to my prob- after having my annual review with podiatrist in May i was told i had stage 1 neuropathy then when i saw the diabetic cons also in May (after waiting since oct 08 for app!!) he confirmed that diagnosis. The pain in my feet is unbareable most days & i mentioned this to the podiatrist when i saw her 17th Sept so she advised me to see my G.P to change the Amitriptyline(25mg x2 nightly) to Gabapentine to ease the pain. I went to see G.P on Monday & he examined my feet & he said i DONT have neuropathy it is prob Chilblaines i am suffering with!!! As you can imagine i was shocked(understatement!!) & so said to G.P that did he think podiatrist & consultant were wrong, he then said to me that it cant be neuropathy as the pain is worse in my left foot & with neuropathy you get same pain in BOTH feet, i do get pain in both feet but it is worse in my left foot- so therefore if you get Athiritus in your left knee then you MUST have it in your right knee otherwise it isn't arthiritus. What maddened me more was that 1 hour after leaving surgery the nurse rang to say prescription was waiting for me as the G.P had asked her her opinion & as she is a diabetic also & has Gabapentin for the same reason as me then he did prescription, so its a good job my practice nurse is also on Gabapentin otherwise i would not have got them. I am so angry words can't describe it, but has anyone else been told the same as me???

No, not personally.

Your GP sounds like he/she is out oif their depth ? Are there any other GP's in the practice you could see who are perhaps more experienced and more knowledgeable ?

You don't have to stick with the one you have, especially as it appears you don't have much confidence in his/her ability. Quite rightly from the sound of it !!

Hi Gerry O,

When my blood glucose levels were at their highest, I frequently had such problems - particularly during the night - that I didn't usually associate with my diabetic condition. Pins and needles in the hands and arms - also cramp in the calf muscles. What I do know is that I don't suffer any of this now that I have normalised my blood glucose levels.

Neither do I ever have to get up in the night to go to the toilet - I used to be getting up around four times a night. I used to attribute the latter to getting old and posible prostate problems.

All these symptoms have gone now - and I hope forever!

Best wishes - John

Hi ange-eren.

Thank you for reporting ME to ME.....a moderator ??? :?

I think that what you meant to do was post this reply to my previous answer ?

From ange-ren.
Thanks for that ive never really gone to G.P much for that simple reason that i haven't much faith in him, 1 of his classic quotes when i saw him last year after my admission in hospital was " oh we haven't seen you for quite a while Angela do you realise that you are wasting millions in government money due to you not coming for your reviews & everytime you have a blood test the surgery recieves payment!!" "Thanks for your concern in my health" was my quote unquote!!! I just wondered if my syptoms were different with having more pain in 1 foot than the other, thanks again for your response. I am very confused at the moment & my G.P does not ease the pressures im under with my diabetes etc. Ange x

So next time can you click on either the 'QUOTE' button OR the 'POST REPLY' button and save me having to moderate myself and remove the report about ME from the forum records. I have enough 'black marks as it is.

I hope that is what you meant to do anyway.......

Thank-you sorry if i offended u , well thats wat i thought i had anyway, im so confused at the mo with everything thats goin on with 1. Neuropathy 2. My G.P 3. My diabetic consultant not seeing me 4. My blood sugars being so erratic 5. my claim for DLA taking so long to go through 6. My claim for incapacity benefit being put on hold also. Its just 1 thing after another feel like my head is going to explode so sorry if i reacted as i did. :D

Ange-eren.
No problem at all. I was not offended - I was more amused at what I had to do here ? :D

Nice to know that there are people out there who can accept that sometimes things aren't as clear cut as they seem. You have restored my faith in human nature.

Thank YOU. :D
