Trapped wind (or at least I think so)

So I’ve been on a low carb diet for about 3 weeks now. The last week or so I’ve been suffering from trapped wind. Or at least that’s what it feels like. I’ve been drinking 3-4 cups of peppermint tea daily for a while now. Today went out and bought wind settlers which has helped a little.

What am I lacking in my diet? I’m not constipated. I’m able to pass stools daily (sorry for the TMI).

I’m starting to get a bit down about it to be honest, I’ve not doubled over in pain but I’m now not sleeping well in the night because of it and it’s a constant pain which varies in intensity throughout the day.

I used to get a lot of it before I cut out the carbs and in fact had even just got in a large packet of Rennies on the day that I'd started my change of diet. However I've not had one single occurrence in the six weeks of low carb? I wonder if it could be one certain food that disagrees with you?

Thank you. My body’s been generally better on low carb, no more heartburn and I used to have that daily before I reduced what I ate and lost all the junk food. I haven’t really changed what I eat, I’ve just removed the carbs, so I can’t think of anything that I might be intolerant too.

Do you think it might be unrelated to your diet change? Maybe worth contacting your GP if it persists

Most likely (or at least I hope so) and something that’ll just correct itself after a while. Just my body getting used to things I guess. But yes, thank you, a trip to the GP might be needed if the problem insists.

However, I’m avoiding the GP surgery at the moment!

GP: “Well the metformin that you’re on is probably causing your bloating and trapped wind”

me: hmmm I am not on the metformin you prescribed 3 weeks ago

GP: wahhhhhhh

I imagine that conversation will be steered away to how my diabetes is killing me and how I should be on meds for diabetes and kidneys etc etc.

of course I’ll bite the bullet and go see the GP and take the lecture (again) if things don’t improve soon

When you say "low carb" do you know roughly how many grams of carbs per day?

And what kind of foods are they coming from mainly? Lots of veg?

Greek yoghurt and veg, occasionally a slice of toast. One strawberry and 4 raspberries lol

veg varies but usually Greek salads, or broccoli and cabbage

Might be worth skipping the yoghurt for a few days just to see..

I must admit I sometimes get a bit of bloating when I have it..might help and worth an experiment.

I note the comment you made regarding heartburn being a pre-existing condition prior to going low carb, which would indicate a potential trigger was already in your previous diet. Maybe a lactose tolerance or a gluten tolerance issue? Maybe a stomach acidity problem? Some medications and supplements can lead to problems in that department (apart from Metformin which is apparently excluded from this discussion). Some heart treatments can cause acidity (aspirin, clopidogrel, NSAIDs, etc)

It might be the toast.
These days my stomach really doesn't like shop bought bread. It isn't the flour, as I can eat my Yorkshire puddings, but there are so many additives and 'improvers'.
Try skipping any bread for a couple of days and see if that helps.

Thank you I’ll definitely try that!

So the heartburn probably started 2-3 months before diagnosis, alongside an extra stone in weight- I guess when my diet had got really bad

can one develop lactose intolerance? Oh hmmm yes maybe something to do with stomach acidity too

may have to cut out a particular food at a time and see if it’s the trigger.

I’m not on any heart medication

Thank you for the suggestions, worth exploring

I find that cream gives me stomach problems, which is a shame because I enjoy it in coffee and on berries.

are you sure its trapped wind? might be worth checking things out with your doctor?

@HurricaneHippo - are you eating or drinking artificial sweeteners at all?

I'm OK on some, but sugar-free Polo Mints cause me dire wind and horrible gurgling in my tummy. Thankfully, I'm not a sweetie fan, or my OH would be moving me in to the garage or garden shed.

Update: thank you so much to everyone who messaged. The wind did pass! I spent a whole day drinking peppermint tea and taking wind settlers and took a buscopan tablet. Fine as rain the next morning

stopped Greek yoghurt like someone mentioned and it’s not come back so far

love to you all for taking time to message me, thank you!!!

That's great news! So pleased for you, and as you say Greek yogurt is not for you and you know now. We all have a food that others can eat yet we cannot so it's good to narrow it down where possible. Isn't it wonderful to be able to talk to people who really know what we're going through xx
