Turning over a new leaf.........

I actually bought an atkins diet book in december. It gave me ideas but as for the counting of things, it just to difficult so i never bothered. If it was calorie counting I'd be fine but not with the carb. EXAMPLE. I'm eating peanuts at the minute in a crunchy shell. It reads PER 100G =43.1G / OF WHICH IS SUGARS 8.1G . Which one do i take notice of? Do you know how many carbs we can have per meal or day?

Counting carbs isn't any more difficult than counting calories. Just the count the Total Carbs. Ignore the "of which is sugar".

The amount depends on the state of your pancreas. Lots of people here would say that about 100g of carbohydrate a day would be a sensible total. Why don't you try that and see how it helps your BG readings? You might be able to get away with a bit more or a bit less, but 100g a day would probably be a lot better than what you're doing now...

Good luck.

Hey Mistee,

you can do this - I use the Collins Gem Carb Counter book. It's small enough to fit in my testing kit and it's only a few squid on Amazon.

I started carb counting on 22nd Jan (I bought a pocket diary to record what eat - this may be a bloke thing) and I set myself a limit of under 150g carbs per day (which is half a man's recommended daily allowance). I quickly found that this was too much and I was still high - in the last week I've stayed below 100 with some really low numbers as I've fine tuned a few regular recipes.

In that time I've lost 7 Kilos (just over a stone) though I wasn't very heavy to start with and I feel sooo much better. Today I am wearing a jumper that I consigned to the back of the cupboard years ago because it was too tight :D

Go for it - treat it as an experiment if you like - what have you got to lose ?

Thanks I will give it ago. At least now i have a little something to go on as in 100g's but like a lot of people here, i haven't got any strips left and cant afford to buy. I have already had 2 lots since diagnosed in oct and it was hard to get the second lot from her. I think i might keep a food diary as well and maybe put what carbs they equall for my reference.

Just a wee update.

On Saturday, instead of losing the 2lb to get me to 13st, I actually put on 2lbs  So, although the choccy biscuits didn't increase BG, they increased my weight.

Anyway, I met Didie on Sunday. She is such an inspiration. She kicked me into shape and helped motivate me again. I came home and started reading the books she loaned me, I also made a spreadsheet to keep track of my eating and read bits on the internet about overcoming emotional eating.

I was really good yesterday and today but I ran out of strips last week. Got a new box today and tested tonight 2hrs after dinner. Result: 5.4 Yippee

Let's hope I can keep it up.

Marina

That's a great result Marina. You can keep it up. I have faith in you :D

Of course you can keep it up, those books from Didie will give you options and that'll prevent boredom with the food so it'll be easier from now.

Good for you, eating chocolate used to be my hobby but now as i am soon to be 47 i have decided to ditch the stuff.

The reason being i had a partial amputation of the left foot and all i can do is blame myself, when i wanted chocs i had them but since May last year i have lost 33 punds (sounds beter than 2st 5) and started swinning, i felt a bit strange at first thinking people were looking at me all the time but now i don't care if they are or not.

keep up the good work and remember as lovely as chocs are you may come to miss your toes, i sure do

That's a shock reading your post Trev and really brings home the reality of it all. I am really sorry.

I suppose most people (including myself) think "it wont happen to me".

You are so right-it's not worth eating chocolate. I will ditch it too.

Thanks for the advice and glad you seem to be coping well.

Just one suggestion about giving things up - when I stopped smoking I took up knitting. I'm sure some people can, but I certainly can't knit and smoke at the same time  . It worked.

Have you got anything that you like doing, that you could use as a diversion when you get those cravings? I do puzzle books (sad!), and I make glass bead jewellery as a hobby. It keeps my hands too full to eat with - or drink with, come to that!

More seriously - no, we don't need complications. The goal is long-term - do you love chocolate more than your nice newly-sleek feet?

Stick with it, Marina! Only veg carbs have passed my lips since SUnday - and no booze! A day at a time . . .

Didie kindly gave me a cross stitch to do so I am going to start that asap and do it every time I feel like eating.

Will frame it and put it on the wall as a symbol of what I did to lose the weight!

You are doing really well this week Viv. Maybe we are both getting over Christmas and back on the wagon at last

Keep it up.
