Hi
I’m type 1 and am 5 weeks pregnant. This is my second pregnancy and was planned. Hba1c is good and always been well controlled. However the last 2 days my sugar levels have been 15-19 for no obvious reasons. I’m on a pump and increased my insulin and nothing is working. As it’s a bank holiday I can’t contact my specialist nurse until Tuesday. Just wondered if this is normal in early pregnancy? I know from about 6 weeks you usually have hypos. Just been really stressed out by it.
Any advice or people who have experienced similar would be great

Evening!

Retired Midwife here. The hormonal changes taking place in your body are a tornado at the moment so it’s no wonder your numbers are wonky. However, it could be something completely unrelated.
If you weren’t pregnant and saw those numbers, what would you normally do?

Huge hug. Firstly congratulations- a nice planned pregnancy with a good a1c it’s a strong starting point.
As @wiflib says hormones cause insulin response chaos. Treat the high as usual and call your team on Tue for to ‘‘tis from them. Your insulin needs are going to change a lot as you progress.

Congratulations, from what I remember during the first Trimester I needed a lot more insulin... Was even put on metformin - which helped and then in my Second trimester my insulin requirements dropped dramatically as I was hypoing so much. My hba1c was never perfect the lowest I got it in pregnancy was 53 - which is the lowest it has ever been! Don't stress too much as obviously that will affect your sugars too! Maybe try a temporary basal rate at +20% and see how you go? X

Hello @laurenlauren and welcome :)

I'd start with a set change and fresh insulin first before trying anything, you may of hit a bad absorption site.

Also please check with your team before changing your basal rate, as your pregnant as others have said hormones could be impacting things, however please get checked out by your team first before making any adjustments.

Also try not to stress it could be a temporary blip, take care Hun :)

Hi,
you could phone 111 and ask their advice, maybe there might be someone oncall in the diabetes team.
Hope all goes well with your pregnacy.
Good luck

Thanks everyone for your replies.
I started with doing corrections when they didn’t work I did a complete set change. When that didn’t work I used pen corrections. I then increased basal by 20% and still in mid teens so increased to 30%.
It’s crazy how different it’s been compared to my first pregnancy, I remember the hypos well but not the highs.
Thanks again for everyone’s help. I assumed it would be down to hormones.
