Was diagnosed with type 1 after going into dka, spent a week in hospital. Since then I've been struggling to keep my blood sugar levels low without having hypos everyday. I have recently had an appointment with a dietician and started matching my carb intake to my food insulin. It just doesn't seem to be going well, I'm literally always too high. How do people do it I just can't seem to find a balance.

Welcome to the forums. Do you take fixed doses of rapid-acting insulin; or, do you vary the amount of rapid-acting insulin depending on the amount of carbs you are going to eat?

I vary it according to what I eat, I downloaded the app carbs and cals on the advice of the dietician. I can wake up in the morning and my blood sugar can be 7, and half an hour later it can be 14, without even eating or drinking anything. I do have some mild/ moderate liver damage so this can affect how much sugar the liver produces (less than usual) but they don't seem to be bothered about this, just told me to up my rapid insulin from one unit per 10 carbs, to 1 and a half units per 10 carbs. I have done this but my blood sugars are still mostly high.

Hi @nel c and welcome to the forums.

Honestly it takes time to get your doses right and 5 months is still very early on in your diabetic journey. I'm still learning and tweaking after 53 years.

Any chance your clinic could send you on a course such as DAFNE?

There is so much to digest after a T1 diagnosis. Almost 2 years on I still feel like a beginner sometines.

2nd @EllieM suggestion to try and get on a DAFNE course.

Usually your team will start on lower doses until you gradually work out what works for you. Everybodys body is different and they would rather risk hypers then hypos (immediate threat).

Hi Ellie, I'm on the list for a DAFNE course it will be around February next year. Thanks for replying, what you said about still learning after years of being diagnosed has made me feel better, they seem to expect everything to go by the book but it just doesn't work like that, it can be so unpredictable

For many of us it definitely does not just 'go by the book', ie dont think it will behave all the time cos well it wont no-matter what you do, in other words make sure you don't beat yourself up if it doesn't go to plan
