Type 1: What are your HbA1c test results?

Hi I'm Cy I'm not into this HbA1c, I do my tests 4 times a day and they are a bit all over the place, I start off in the morning 6.3 then it go's to 9.7 then to 9.5 and then to 10.9, Over a period of 30 days it averages out at 8.0 . I am on Insulin 84 units in the morning and 16 before tea, I'm also on steroids for MG which doesn't help, I know when I go below 5.0 I'm hypo. Any suggestions and help?

My latest HbA1c - 5.4 (35 mmol/mol), down from 7.1 (54 mmol/mol) about 4 months ago. What an incredible feeling and much of that is due to the support/advice received in this group through sharing your own experiences, posting relevant books and links to read up on.

Cholesterol was 8.7, Triglycerides - 0.6, HDL - 2.5 and LDL 5.9 (Cholesterol/HDL ratio - 3.5)

Doctor wanted to know how many hypos I was having and commented that he would prefer type 1 diabetics running an hbA1c of 6.5-7.5%...alarm bells ringing for me. When I challenged him about it he didn't say much lol. Then of course the cholesterol question came up about being too high etc. Thoughts? Time to watch amount of fat intake a little closer now that better glucose control better? Thanks for all the support guys :)

Doctors/nurses are doing my head in at the moment. My last hba1c was 6.8% and one nurse said that's too low!? Was absolutely fuming!! Whilst 6.8% is ok, I would definitely like to be lower. The ultimate aim of us type 1's (type 2's also of course) is to achieve levels equivalent to a non-diabetic, right!? That's my aim anyway! So it drives me up the wall when I'm told by a 'specialist' nurse that 6.8% is too low!

The thing now is they are all terrified of people having too low sugars because apparently research in the last few years has shown that hypo's greatly increase the risk of heart disease and having heart attacks (don't ask me how or to produce medical links as I am just quoting what more than one endo has told me). They are now saying that running HBCA1c's slightly higher is not as damaging as was first thought years ago for eyes and kidneys etc. So basically the mantra of the last God knows how many years is now changing. Problem is that those of us that have been T1 for a long time have apparently been doing it wrong!

So that may be the reason for them worrying about your levels that you think are too high. Next time you see them ask them about it and why the shift in perspective but I have now been told this several times in the last few years. However some of them don't have the foggiest anyway!

I thought the NICE recommended level for type 1 was 6.5% or have I got that wrong?

Wow that's impressive well done you

My most recent (8 months ago) were 10.5! :-( Aiming to significantly reduce this in the next 10 weeks if I can. Currently managing to keep levels between 4.8 and around 8 at the usual highest. Fingers crossed for a much much lower result next time!! X

Well done you. Keep it up - it's not easy, but the results are worth it.

Sorry to be ignorant, I'm new to all this so this will be a really stupid question

But..

What's the difference in solutions to high FB in type 1 and 2

Got scared of asking this question and tried to delete but it wouldn't let me! :(
Don't be scared. We won't eat you! Usually T1s can manipulate their FBG by altering their insulin dosing overnight. But they have to take care about hypos in their sleep. Also day time exercise can have a huge impact for T1s.
T2s usually need to alter their food intake in some way, more than medication.

Great figures,teacher123, my doc said the same ....err we need you a bit higher say 6.5 mmols , i left laughing like a drain

Was diagnosed this February at 97 (11 %) and as of last week I am 53 (7 %).

Still a long way to go as I want to be below 6.5 % but it's a good start. Starting on the pump in January should also help matters :)
