Type 1'stars R Us

Morning all,

I woke up just after midnight to a Libre reading of 2.9 during the night, ate 2 wine gums, and went back to sleep, and it then slowly rose to 6.8, and I corrected that with 1 unit, and woke about 7am on 3.4. This is Libre readings, so I'm not sure how accurate that 2.9 was, it didn't feel that low. That's sort of manageable overnight variations, though less would be nice, as long as less was at the right level.

Oh my word!!!! I am a receptionist in a VERY busy garage/MOT station. Just had a young lad in, who waited for his MOT. We got talking and he seen me scan my Libre. He asked what it was, so I explained. He told me he was type 1 and very well controlled. I asked him what his BG's were and he said he hadn't tested for over 2 years!!!! Now me being me, I had a right go at him, telling him about all my problems with not testing regular! He came up to pay for his MOT and he stank of pear drops, which I know from experience is the smell of ketones. Asked him if he wanted me to test his blood OR test when he gets home OR go straight to A&E. He just huffed at me. Fingers crossed he will seek medical attention before its too late. Thats the second type 1 in 2 months with tghe same smell and with good control I have seen in the office!

Went to sleep at 5.1, woke at 5am with a 10.8, 1.5u Novo and 5.9 at 7.49 am. These night time rises have been going on for three days now. Afternoon rises too, lots of corrections. Why? Cooler weather? Bug? Time to up the basal - basal test due? Him Indoors’ cooking? Changed vials, so not that. And it was all going so well a few days ago.

OR.....the trails and tribulations of being type 1. SORRY that was no help at all
May be time for another basal rate check??

That’s so sad @porl69, if the pear drops are ketones, and not actual pear drops, as his lack of testing suggests, then the lad seems to be running away from his T1. If he is then I really hope he’s able to accept it soon enough to escape the worse effects and turn his control around.
Back in the old pre Libre, pre blood test, days it was possible to be fairly well controlled without anything other than the awful pee tests, but it still involved testing, and watching food, physical symptoms, insulin strength, regular check ups etc.

Classic T1 denial. I’ve done the same thing myself, sadly :(

@Knikki - in the info pill on Spike it tells you the charge level. There is probably something similar in your app? I charge mine once a month or so.

Another thought: how does he get his driving licence and convince the DVLA he’s well controlled? They’d contact his GP or the Consultant. Do you check licence and insurance holder when you do an MOT at your garage?

No need to check for licence or insurance. Its just the MOT on the car we have to check. He could be in the middle of his 3 year cycle on getting his licence renewed (good luck with that one).

Totally agree, in my 20's. I did actually know more than my diabetic doctors! They said I would loose my eyesight and have kidney problems. Pffft, what did they know!!!! They were actually correct and I was totally wrong. BUT hey-ho, still here and standing and trying to preach to diabetics how important good control and regular testing is :)

I work with a T1 diabetic too... He doesn’t test either, will inject after meals (which I did for many years and had okayish control) but always has an excuse.... thats what frustrates me.

If I knew what I know today 10 years ago or if I had friends like you guys (my forum buddies) helping me along the way - I wouldn’t have the complications I have today.

It is hard watching another T1 making poor choices. Don’t get me wrong we all do, I have plenty of days where I think I am
going to eat what I want, or bolus after meals (because of unplanned eating)....

I backed off giving him advice and show him through my own actions. I have had so many work colleagues complimenting me on the fact I have lost weight (through low carb) & when I told them it was all to do with my diabetes and weight loss was a bonus they have been genuinely supportive and happy.

A type 2 colleague would spend hours talking to me each day and I motivated her to low carb (her words). She is now in remission and thanks me for it (she did all the hard work).

T1 is hard enough to live with- I am soo soooo soooo fortunate and stumbled across this forum.

Perhaps we could do some Samaritans type posters and postcards that encourage people to join the forum.

Yeah I am with you on that. Unfortunately got the scars to prove it as well :)
Love this forum and all the advice I read on here EVERY day. It still amazes me that people go out of their way to help and give valuable info without question. BIG THUMBS up to all at DCUK :)

Ignorance is not always bliss !!

Perhaps @Scott-C can advise on Android issues?

@porl69 Makes you wonder how many type 1 diabetics are about believing they are well controlled because they take insulin and don't test, I hope it's a tiny minority..
I did for far too long :( It’s like not opening the brown envelopes that keep landing on your doormat and still going shopping because your card works. You think you’re in control of things, because you’re not taking any notice of the bad stuff, meanwhile, debt is building up and sooner or later it’s gonna bite you.

The really sad thing is how do you ever get the support for this, because unless people speak up and ask for it no one is going to come knocking at the door saying help is here, also the NHS had a great ability to write people off as non compliant without acknowledging that this form of abuse needs intervention and support, so people can easily slip under the radar unnoticed until sadly an event like a DKA episode strikes.

That’s exactly what happened to me. I’d been crying my eyes out in the DSN’s office because I just didn’t know how to help myself. Just got told to pull myself together because I knew full well what the consequences would be. Two DKAs still didn’t kick me into doing it. Understanding the WHY you can’t do it is what makes the difference - whether it’s the sensory overstimulation of fingerpricking (as in my case), not wanting to seem different, weight loss (also me), fear of needles, not being able to do all the maths, constant carb counting, fear of hypos... I was, as you say, basically written off as non-compliant and became beyond caring. I developed a very fatalistic attitude. I’m not exaggerating when I say the Libre literally saved my bacon.
