I was offered, out of the blue, a prescription for test strips the last time I saw the practice's diabetic nurse. At the time, I had about half a dozen unopened boxes - but I'll take her up on it next time. She says they do offer them if you can show that you will actively manage your diet to control your blood glucose.

Unbelievably I had a 6.9 this morning. Only thing I can think of is that I had a small carby snack before bed and even tho I thought it was 'small' - it obviously wasn't!!

5.9 this morning. I rarely check morning Bg's because of DP so quite pleased.

Day 6 of Newcastle diet: 5.9 - best reading since I came off medication. At last my fasting readings are starting to come down. :)

Day 4 on the Newcastle diet and my lowest ever FBG 5.0. I do have an appointment at the diabetic clinic today, so they will probably be sky high when I get home

Hi everyone

I'm type 2 diet only.

Should I be testing my blood glucose every morning?

The Diabetic nurse has not given me any means of doing this.

I am tested every 6 months at the surgery.

Hi Jim, meters on prescription are like hens teeth for T2. We almost all buy our own and our own strips to test. I feel testing is essential. I would buy your own meter as you're highly unlikely to be given one. Good luck.

Errr ....... I was given one - by Abbott, completely free. As it happened, I already had an Abbott Freestyle Mini, which I used. On the Abbott website, you can download software (FOC) that makes it easier to monitor you BG levels. They will also supply you with a free lead to connect a Freestyle monitor to your PC. Two days after I downloaded the software, I got a phone call from someone at Abbott who said they were going to upgrade my monitor to a FreeStyle Lite - which I now use. It arrived in the post a few days later - again, completely free. I'm sure their action is not entirely (or even partly?) altruistic as they will make money on sale of strips for the lifetime of the monitor (they are typically £10 - £12 /box of 50 on Fleabay - but double that elsewhere).

If anyone lives near me (Oldham), they are welcome to have my old FreeStyle Mini. It still works fine

Errr I said given by the Doctor or DSN. You may have a meter free from the manufacturer, but I would lay odds you won't get strips or lancets on prescription.
