Thank you. I like to think I'm pretty level headed person but very hard to describe the whirlwind of extreme emotions since walking out the surgery. Been reading about Mark Labbett and Tom Kerridge That's the range I'm in unfortunately. A few chickens coming home too roost
Hy guys. After initial mix of emotions I've accepted the fact I'm diabetic 2.
Always been a big guy and over life lost weight and piled it back on umpteen times whilst drinking and eating unhealthily.Lost my father last year and that spurred me into gym and diet kick and lost over 6stone so far. Whilst feeling better for weight loss had few ailments in that year and generally 'down'which my doctor said was likely grief/stress. Long story short culminates in diagnosis 24 hr ago.The stats I remember 121. 16.2 sugar and 0.7 ketones. My blood pressure was good and all other tests ok. Took first Metformin with breakfast and been ok so far. Obviously reading about nutrition and cutting carbs and bad fat and sugar. Due back week tomorrow for checks again so will start to get numbers and Info to see if I progress etc. Any advice gratefully received and if anyone knows roughly what calorie intake I should take aim for then great?
BMI is 47 so not great but a lot better than it was. I've tried a couple of different sites and getting contradictory results.. Cheers
Hi and welcome. A lot of good advice so far. Just cut the carbs and have enough protein and fats to keep you feeling full. You will find that you don't need to worry about Calories. Just follow the advice and your body weight and BS should look after themselves. If you want to tweak your weight later then just adjust the three food types.

You're not going to be given a meter, sorry. The bulk of us self-fund, as they only give meters to people who are on gliclazide and the like, or insulin. With just metformin there's no risk of you getting a hypo, and there's so very, very many T2's out there, that the NHS would likely go bankrupt if they had to fund us all.
The NHS doesn't, as a rule, fund meters for T2's unless they are on blood glucose lowering medication like gliclazide, or on insulin. Mainly because with medication like that, you're not allowed to drive if you run a hypo risk, the insurance wouldn't pay out. The odd GP or nurse may give a person who doesn't meet the criteria one, at their discretion, but the bulk of us have to self fund... And when I just started out and began eating to my meter, one can of 50 strips lasted me about a week. Here in the Netherlands, I get 40 euro's per annum for a meter, strips and/or lancets. That doesn't get me very far, and from what I understand, the UK's NHS funds even less. Sorry, you're the exception that confirms the rule, it seems. You'll get a meter if you persist ! As my parents were both diabetics(2), I already have a meter and just needed more test strips. One can of 50 strips lasted me over a year as I was just occasionally monitoring.
They've issued me with a new meter: Fine Test Lite as the test strips are cheaper.
A great start.Ok it was the follow up appointment this morning after last week's diagnosis.
Different diabetic nurse but nice enough.
Been prescribed the slow release tablets due to the diahorrea. My readings 16.2 and 0.7 ketone initially. Today 12.8 and 0.4. She seemed happy with this. She was dismissive of the low carb regime and told me not to bother getting a meter? All about the medicine as far as she was concerned.
I am in no doubt the low carb and excersise has been key. Will know a lot more when do the 3 month test but for now that is my story.
A great start.
The meter advice is common, misguided, down to lack of knowledge how to use it for type 2 diet purposes and financially driven
don’t you know none of us should bother helping ourselves when we can all pop pills!!
As others have said, ditch the calorie count. I lost over 5.5 stone by carb counting.
At first I weighed everything that had carbs in it, then after a few weeks I could just weigh breakfast (too easy to let my flaxseed/chia/oatbran mix creep up) plus any new foods.
I thought about the foods I'd miss and found substitutes for most of them although I've given up on pasta and have the spag bol meat and sauce without. I've become of fan of cauliflower rice and make a batch in the oven every week - used with curry, stir fry or 'risotto'.
Low carb Sausage rolls would really be a treat. Almond flour may be hard to source at moment but will certainly try.
Definitely look for ground almonds in the U.K. - online has better deals generally and I’ve seen posts about Indian supermarkets having good value large bags. Supermarket wise Sainsbury’s seems best value at £5 per 500g.Almond flour is the same as ground almonds. Different brands are milled to different consistencies. The one I buy from Amazon is the same as Tesco’s griubdcalminds.
