Type 2
HI ALL, I have PTSD from 15years military service going to be medical discharged as I was sucidal 20 weeks ago and got no help from my Dr or NHS they just wanted to pill me up,Ive also been dionosed with CRPS, I'm under treatment looking at my heart and brain as well as collapsed 2x in 4 days and taken to hospital where I got dionosed with type2.
Been going to Dr for 7 weeks with symptoms of diabetes and they just put it down to ptsd. I'm on various pain meds and metformin, however I have the bad sweats etc dizziness tingling and few other symptoms. My Dr will not issue a test machine as he says I don't need one!!!

Cannot get to see the diabetic nurse till first appointment 12 Dec even that I tried booking in Oct 16
I do alot of fishing on rivers and lakes to help with my PTSD and had these turns their where I had to move away from the bank and lay down on the floor for 40 min etc, scared I might pass out and fall into the water. I need a way of checking my blood however on benefits as cannot work with the ptsd so cannot afford a meter.

I cannot ask the army as only part time now and it won't do anything.

Any ideas please help.

All the pills you can swallow will not help if your diet is **** - I am recently diagnosed myself and feel that I have got a whole new lease of life by returning to eating low carb - I ate that way for decades before being told to change to lower cholesterol. Yes it is down a few points but in less than two years I am a full on type 2 diabetic. Two weeks eating low carb and I feel so much better - and more cheerful. I was getting to the state where I was considering a stair lift it was so hard to get up to the bathroom, now I am scooting up the stairs no problem.

Hi and welcome @Mikeperkins
I will tag @daisy1 for her helpful info for newcomers.
Most type 2's on here fund their own meters, The cost is in the strips as those you will need to keep on buying. A lot here including me use the sdcodefree from Homehealth as that has the cheapest strips.
http://homehealth-uk.com/product-category/blood-glucose/blood-glucose-monitor/
You need to say you're diabetic as then you don't pay VAT and in the UK we use mmol/L
If you do go for this one there are discounts for buying strips in bulk and the codes are
5 packs 264086
10 packs 975833

Thankyou I have also checked with touch one and the strips can get on prescription in my area just Dr is a pain to get the meter of...but worse case I'll have to save get one and use discount codes but will name and shame the Dr and med centre in the paper and radio, I don't take fools likely when their supposed to be a professional and know what their doing...

Hi Mike
Sorry you've got all your problems but now you've come to the forum here, you should get some good advice, encouragement and support.

It's quite usual that Type 2s are not given glucose meters and prescribed test strips. Most, if not all, Type 2s have to buy their own meter. Certainly, the Diabetes Nurse might be able to give you a meter that a Rep has left for her but, to get strips prescribed, you would need to be prescribed insulin-promoting medications or insulin. As already mentioned by Hiitsme, the SDCodefree seems to have the cheapest test strips and, being diagnosed diabetic, you will also be exempt from the VAT so you can indicate this on your order form.

OneTouch test strips will probably be more expensive to buy. It may be that OneTouch test strips are on the list for GPs to prescribe but, again, your GP is unlikely to prescribe them as you're Type 2. I appreciate how frustrating this is when you hear your GP, and most likely the Diabetes Nurse, tells you you don't need to test.

Do keep posting and let us know how you are progressing :)

Thankyou for the info Dr just been on phone I had ago at them and they are going to get diabetic nurse to call me 2morrow and then issue me with a starter kit

Please let us know how it goes-and keep asking questions if you have them. Also depression can be a symptom of diabetes uncontrolled as well-I do not know if you know that. I am hoping you begin to feel much better as you take control of this disease. Good job advocating for yourself!:)

Great news re Dr asking nurse to give you a meter. That would suggest you will have test strips prescribed :) Good on you :)

@Mikeperkins, welcome. It's very true that we have to be the boss of our diabetes and enlist our care providers as staff. Occasionally we do have to chew them out. Good on you pushing for a meter and strips, I hope you will be able to get a regular supply of strips, etc., once your starter kit runs out.

The low-carb, high fat diet is worth a try. By all means give it a go. It's not for everyone, but for a fair number of people on this forum (including me) have had incredible results, feeling healthier, livelier, fitter and happier for the first time in years.

@Mikeperkins

Hello Mike and welcome to the forum :) Here is the basic information we give to new members and I hope you will find it useful. In particular it will help you with low carbing and contains a link to the Low Carb Program which you could try. Ask more questions when you need to and someone will be able to help.

BASIC INFORMATION FOR NEWLY DIAGNOSED DIABETICS

Diabetes is the general term to describe people who have blood that is sweeter than normal. A number of different types of diabetes exist.

A diagnosis of diabetes tends to be a big shock for most of us. It’s far from the end of the world though and on this forum you'll find well over 220,000 people who are demonstrating this.

On the forum we have found that with the number of new people being diagnosed with diabetes each day, sometimes the NHS is not being able to give all the advice it would perhaps like to deliver - particularly with regards to people with type 2 diabetes.

The role of carbohydrate

Carbohydrates are a factor in diabetes because they ultimately break down into sugar (glucose) within our blood. We then need enough insulin to either convert the blood sugar into energy for our body, or to store the blood sugar as body fat.

If the amount of carbohydrate we take in is more than our body’s own (or injected) insulin can cope with, then our blood sugar will rise.

The bad news

Research indicates that raised blood sugar levels over a period of years can lead to organ damage, commonly referred to as diabetic complications.

The good news

People on the forum here have shown that there is plenty of opportunity to keep blood sugar levels from going too high. It’s a daily task but it’s within our reach and it’s well worth the effort.

Controlling your carbs

The info below is primarily aimed at people with type 2 diabetes, however, it may also be of benefit for other types of diabetes as well.

There are two approaches to controlling your carbs:

  • Reduce your carbohydrate intake
  • Choose ‘better’ carbohydrates
Reduce your carbohydrates

A large number of people on this forum have chosen to reduce the amount of carbohydrates they eat as they have found this to be an effective way of improving (lowering) their blood sugar levels.

The carbohydrates which tend to have the most pronounced effect on blood sugar levels tend to be starchy carbohydrates such as rice, pasta, bread, potatoes and similar root vegetables, flour based products (pastry, cakes, biscuits, battered food etc) and certain fruits.

Choosing better carbohydrates

The low glycaemic index diet is often favoured by healthcare professionals but some people with diabetes find that low GI does not help their blood sugar enough and may wish to cut out these foods altogether.

Read more on carbohydrates and diabetes.

Over 145,000 people have taken part in the Low Carb Program - a free 10 week structured education course that is helping people lose weight and reduce medication dependency by explaining the science behind carbs, insulin and GI.

Eating what works for you

Different people respond differently to different types of food. What works for one person may not work so well for another. The best way to see which foods are working for you is to test your blood sugar with a glucose meter.

To be able to see what effect a particular type of food or meal has on your blood sugar is to do a test before the meal and then test after the meal. A test 2 hours after the meal gives a good idea of how your body has reacted to the meal.

The blood sugar ranges recommended by NICE are as follows:

Blood glucose ranges for type 2 diabetes
  • Before meals: 4 to 7 mmol/l
  • 2 hours after meals: under 8.5 mmol/l
Blood glucose ranges for type 1 diabetes (adults)
  • Before meals: 4 to 7 mmol/l
  • 2 hours after meals: under 9 mmol/l
Blood glucose ranges for type 1 diabetes (children)
  • Before meals: 4 to 8 mmol/l
  • 2 hours after meals: under 10 mmol/l
However, those that are able to, may wish to keep blood sugar levels below the NICE after meal targets.

Access to blood glucose test strips

The NICE guidelines suggest that people newly diagnosed with type 2 diabetes should be offered:

  • structured education to every person and/or their carer at and around the time of diagnosis, with annual reinforcement and review
  • self-monitoring of plasma glucose to a person newly diagnosed with type 2 diabetes only as an integral part of his or her self-management education

Therefore both structured education and self-monitoring of blood glucose should be offered to people with type 2 diabetes. Read more on getting access to blood glucose testing supplies.

Don't lose heart, diabetes can be a pain but you can have a good life. You just have to be a bit more cautious!

I found an old meter from a family member who used it ten years ago, but new batteries brought it back - I bought some lancets and strips for it and it is really encouraging that I have seen my numbers falling, even over the short period of time I've had it. It makes me want to go on with the low carb eating.
