Under 20g of carbs a day????

Gammon, eggs, tomatoes, mushrooms, low carb sausage!

That would fill me most of the day!

Some people are claiming to achieve under 20g of carbs a day. Is this possible? I have just had an apple and a very small spoon of yoghurt for breakfast and it came to 19.6g!

Yes it is possible!

I heard about this as well and I had a complete change in my lifestyle and how I looked after my diabetes. If you look up foods that are low in carbs, there are plenty of food which have no carbs! Amazing! I frequently ate these kinds of foods and saw that I didn't need half as much of insulin!

Hope this helps! :woot:

I know not everyone is as fortunate as I am but before low carbing I was injecting twice a day with Lantus and before every meal or snack with Novorapid - around six or seven injections a day. :( Because of eating less than 20g of carbs each day I am now just taking 2 x Metformin and am hoping this year to reduce it to one Met per day.

Would I swap a healthy low carb way of eating for all those injections? No way. (Not even for unlimited Morrison's tiger bread.;) )

Once you have been in Keto for a while you do not consider your diet restrictive more a diet of liberation. liberated from the confines of medication and illness. I do however take your point.
I guess that's where we differ as T1 and T2.

For me there is no benefits of a reduced carb intake. The less carbs I eat, the more insulin I need to take for protein. So it all gets a bit complicated with no real benefits.

Crispy bacon. creamy scrambled eggs, smoked salmon. crispy duck. roast pork, crackling, roast chicken. fillet steak mushrooms in creamy pepper sauce. endless varieties of cheese. coffee with cream, rich greek yogurt and berries. skate wing fried in butter..fresh salads and veggies.. I could go on for ages.
20g carbs a day... am I deprived.. hell no!
And that's just keeping it simple. I batch cook and freeze portions for later... Beef lasagne (veg layers. not pasta. butternut squash works well) Beef chilli. Spicy moroccan lamb tagine , cauliflower cous cous. Rich beef casserole. I can even count in desserts at approx 5 carbs.. dark chocolate mousse. baked egg custard or tangy lemon cheesecake bake.

Surely that assumes you replace carbs with protein...I've always eaten around a 100g protein even before diabetes. I've replaced the carbs with healthy fats.

I do bolus for protein but have much better and stable bs than when I eat carbs. And I don't get hungry, achy, tired, etc. double bonus. And I need FAR less insulin so fears of hypos are minimal.

Those all sound amazing, especially the Moroccan lamb! Care to share the recipe? I know how to cook so probably just need the ingredients.
I've heard steamed cabbage is a great substitute for lasagna layers. Never tried it.
I batch cook too. Makes things so much easier. Tons of variety of proteins and veggies on hand at all times

Hi @Kristin251 I used my slow cooker for the lamb tagine. and basically used what veg I had with boneless diced lamb leg steaks. Fried the diced lamb in olive oil with chopped garlic and onion. When it was slightly brown I added a teaspoon each of tumeric, cumin, celery salt, garlic salt. smoked paprika, cinnamon and nutmeg. I used a half teaspoon of cayenne pepper too but you can add more if you like it spicier. and stirred it around to cover the lamb.. it smells amazing then :) I added boiling water, a tin of chopped tomatoes and a stock cube but if you have stock that would be better. For the veg I used a carrot, butternut squash, mushrooms, red pepper and celery. Left it to cook in the slow cooker for about 4 hours. I did add a tin of drained chick peas then. but that does add a few carbs , they don't spike me but are optional anyway. Left it for another half an hour. If you can wait the flavour is better the next day. The veg nearly dissolve to make a rich tasty sauce.
oops nearly forgot.. I threw in a spoonful of sesame seeds at the frying stage, and some flaked almonds at the end.
If you're OK with the extra carbs you can add apricots or dates too

I'm following the Diet Doctor logic which again is doubling up so that previous day's dinner becomes next day's lunch so I am only cooking once a day at dinner time (I don't count breakfast as 'cooking' as it takes minutes to rustle up their breakfasts). I've been cooking even more portions and like you have started to build up a collection in the freezer. So far hubby and even my grandsons if they are here for meals eat what I eat except they get carbs added so I am not cooking different meals.

Personally, I find the 'sweet spot' is around 100g of carbs a day. It makes my bs less spikey, especially since levemir is really peaky for me.

Since cutting out things like pasta, rice, and bread I definitely think I have more energy. But everybody is different :) I certainly wouldn't want to go lower than 100g, because then as you say it becomes a lot more complicated. Also, diabetes isn't my only health problem, so there's that as well. Fascinating thread!

I think it takes some adjusting to. And you need to accept that processed foods and most sweet foods have no place in a 20g carb a day lifestyle, but that actually makes it astonishingly easy.

You can eat any meat or fish, eggs, dairy such as cheese, cream and butter, vast amounts of above-ground veg, and still fit in a treat a day, such as a slice of low carb cake (5g carbs a slice) or some 70% choc (anywhere from 2.5g to 5 g a square).

If you go wild and splurge up to 25g a day, you start getting REALLY fancy! :D

Could you tell me where to you get the low carb cake from please?

Sounds absolutely amazing!! Thanks for taking the time to write that. These days I'm more more simplistic. Roasted lamb chops with some herbs, side of veg. Haha. I used to love cooking like you but I am so low carb and eat such small meals it hardly is worth the time and far too much temptation to over eat. I miss cooking:(((

Hi,

just google 'low carb ...... cake recipe' and all sorts of recipes will pop up. Here are a couple that are taking my fancy at the moment.
I made the coffee one this evening, and my husband is sprawled on the sofa looking like it is Xmas all over again... :)

I did try it with leeks , very tasty but a bit messy when you try and slice across, thinking about it I could have put them in the other way round :) .. I've also tried courgette, .. a bit wet. and aubergine.. decided I wasn't a great fan of that.. The half inch slices of butternut squash are the fave of the moment.

That made 6 portions, 4 put straight in the freezer for can't be bothered to cook days. Even hubby loved this and he is very dubious of spices and vegetables that are unfamiliar to him.
I started my LCHF journey very simply, but I do love to cook, so now I know what I can eat without spikes I have fun inventing dishes
