Very hungry new Diabetic

I am newly diagnosed too. About 3 months ago now. My best advice would be to try and not worry. You are looking at a low carb diet not a no carb diet. A change from white to wholemeal us good and look into low GI food. I have also had days when i do not worry such as my birthday last week. I have made sure to walk plenty and test my blood so I know what my blood glucose levels are. Knowledge is power. Good luck and remember, it is a positive thing as you now have a good reason to eat a healthy diet we should have been following anyway.

From the Diet Doctor webpage
  • Dietary Advice
    Eat all you like
    • Meat: Any type, including beef, pork, game meat, chicken, etc. Feel free to eat the fat on the meat as well as the skin on the chicken. If possible try to choose organic or grass fed meat.
    • Fish and Shellfish: All kinds: Fatty fish such as salmon, mackerel or herring are great. Avoid breading.
    • Eggs: All kinds: Boiled, fried, omelettes, etc. Preferably choose organic eggs.
    • Natural Fat, High-Fat Sauces: Using butter and cream when you cook can make your food taste better and make you feel more satiated. Try a Béarnaise or Hollandaise sauce, check the ingredients or make it yourself. Coconut oil and olive oil are also good options.
    • Vegetables that Grow Above Ground: All kinds of cabbage, such as cauliflower, broccoli, cabbage and Brussels sprouts. Asparagus, zucchini, eggplant, olives, spinach, mushrooms, cucumber, lettuce, avocado, onions, peppers, tomatoes etc.
    • Dairy products: Always select full-fat options like real butter, cream (40% fat), sour cream, Greek/Turkish yogurt and high-fat cheeses. Be careful with regular milk and skim milk as they contain a lot of milk sugar. Avoid flavored, sugary and low-fat products.
    • Nuts: Good to eat instead of candy in front of the television (preferably in moderation).
    • Berries: Okay in moderation, if you are not a super strict or sensitive. Good with whipped cream.
Hang on i thought we were not supposed to eat Fat or indeed Fried foods This little list is telling us its ok to eat as much fat as we want ??? Im totally confused now

Drink most days
  • Water
  • Coffee: Try it with full-fat cream
  • Tea

Coffee with Full Fat cream ? i thought the idea was to avoid cream unless its well watered down

Johnboy ... low carb high fat ... low carb high fat ... low carb high fat ....

Eat)when)you)are)hungrystop)when)you)are)full

Well obviously you aint gunna carry on eating when you are full.Who writes this stuff.

Thats just what ive been doing Gordon eating my usual stuff except have made a few changes like white bread has become Brown and the usual Macdonalds Sat am brekkie has been substituted by a breakfast in a cafe such as egg on toast, bacon and egg on toast.OJ has gone and i now have some Low sugar Sainsburys fruit squash.Wondering if i should change that to Robinsons R squash as i dont like the info on the label it seems to much sugar etc.
The 2 porkpies i used to have on a Sunday and Tuesday lunch time have been replaced with cooked meat sarnies.
My biggest hurdle is what to eat for supper.I cannot go to bed with an empty stomache id never sleep.I usually have sumat like cake or the like and my mind says thats a no no be better with 2 slices of toast albeit a capfuffle to make some toast but needs must.
Semi skimmed milk has been replaced with Skimmed milk.
When we venture out on a weds day trip i try to eat in a cafe that will do such as egg on toast or a sarnie on brown bread or maybe a small all day breakfast and coffee.

Like Gordon im a very fussy eater.I dont like Veg except for Mushrooms,Potatoes and peas.

High fat remains a mystery to me, I can't see a need for it. I know it has followers who think it has magical powers but I can't find a need for high fat.

lo carb has great merit it is just the HF that seems to me to be unnecessary

I look at it this way.

At the end of a year, all weight loss diets that actually reduce weight, no matter how fast or slow they work, the punter should have reached a "terminal weight" (a weight loss that is not going anywhere) and no matter what the "diet plan" is the end result is same. And a retro look will tell us nothing has changed it is still calories in and effort out.

It might take 6 months or 18 months but let's say 12 months.

If all diet weight losses end up at the same place why would anyone choose a diet that;
a) Goes against mainstream medical wisdom
or
b) Restricts their diet to greasy food if they do not like greasy food and or restricted to limited range of food that some might call boring.

Low carb has great value because even with no portion/serving size limits the calorie count is reduced.

This is verified by 2 recent postings in here naming the following reports.

LC I can understand it is just HF I have trouble with.

Can someone please help me understand what the appeal of HF is and why people can get so precious about it.

helen r wrongly worded her comment l think she means dont test ad hock any old time not as she says not to test all the time

Iif you don't you don't know what's happening. Take 1 just before food goes in your mouth and 2nd test 2hrs afterwards. Even if you do breakfast day one lunch day 2 dinner 3 lunch day 4 etc swap day/meals to save sticks but you will soon start a rough list of how you are affected.

And as to statins well Get the book Grain Brain by Dr Peralmutter you will change your diet no problems and you wont touch statins.

We dont get precious we are sensible and my food is not greasy. If you want to understand lots of reasons out there go read dietdoctor.com or the Southpirt Dr who has just done a trial of subjects on it go ask the Swedish health authorities and go find the info instead of sarcastically asking those who are loosing weight bloods under excellent control reversing health problems and helping others....oh also wont be replying you are on ignore

As a quick side note i think ive been caught fairly early as my doctor says i dont need a meter. If i get one anyway can i get the disposable parts (sorry i dont know what their called) on prescription?

Thats just what the diabetic nurse told me that i dont need to test and dont need any meds or insulin just eat sensibly and she gave me a list of foods to eat and what to avoid and just generally dont eat in excess.

That might be fine but what if like me you are on benefits and a decent monitor may cost up to £20 which is a lot of money to us

Dont count calories count carbs.

John all that bread and toast OUCH my bloods would be off the scale you may as well have cake at night no difference in your blood sugars.... it isn't low carb eating you are doing there sorry to say. With a meter you would see te damage and scare yourself, the food you state eggs/bacon/.cooked meat fine. The list your dn gave you will be a total waste of space and continue with eating as she and her list advises and you will get a meter to test... because you will end up on insulin and with complications.

There is a bread l think livelite? (others here know l don't eat bread) which may do for you but if cost is a feature then don't eat bread.

Go full cream milk less carbs if you like sweet stuff then l get Lindt 90% chocolate and have couple of squares at a time. Or scroll down to the low carb forum on the forum section and look for Chocolate paradise if you or someone you know is into cooking.

Code free is £12 and 50 strips cost £7 at 2 tests a day swapping meals as l stated will last almost a month and quite frankly it is your life not ours so your choice what you do without. If people are able to afford macdonalds rubbish every day but can not buy strips..... no comment.

Very confusing Jack as i was told to eat carbs like Spuds,Cereals,Pasta,Rice and bread
You were told wrong mate.
Carbs especially all that bread you're eating turns to glucose very fast causing your levels to rocket.
Spuds rice pasta all bad news.
All rapidly turn to glucose.
High fat doesn't mean you have to shovel a lard down ya gob.
Sugar makes you fat not fat.
The nurse doctor etc are telling you what they are told to tell you and it's way out of date nonsense.
Read this link.
http://www.dietdoctor.com/lchf

I've gone for it and ... weight down bloods under control looking and feeling loads better.

So what am i supposed to eat i dont like salad etc
Have you clicked on the link and had a read yet?
Have you been to the diets section in here yet?
Do you accept you have a serious disease and have to do something about it yet?
You can do it.

So what am i supposed to eat i dont like salad etc

Neither did I.
I lived on over summer last year.
On a restricted calorie diet
Now I generally eat low GI, a lot of veg, but you have to get the diabetes under control first.

I changed everything I eat, mostly to what I didn't like, as that's what got me there in the first place.

I see from your signature your review is due this week. We will all be very interested to see what your new HbA1c results are and whether your levels have improved..
