Yeah i realise that but i will have to take my chances cos i aint gunna eat what i dont like thats crazy and yes i have tried things in the past thats how i know what i dont like.
Life's changed now though.
I never liked running across the road, but it's a different perspective when there's a bl**dy great bus hurtling down the hill at you.
It's when I realised that, I stopped walking.
It doesn't really matter what direction you run in, so long at you stay in front.
Make a start
Veg = Pots, peas and mushrooms - drop the potatoes, try sweet potatoes
Fruit usually plums and bananas - drop the bananas
dairy = milk, yogurt, cheese, - check the yoghurt for sugar, choose one with no carbs
meat = pork,lamb,beef,chicken,turkey,ham,bacon,corned beef,roast beef, - all good.
Pasta Lasagne, cannaloni, etc - pass on these
Things like cottage pie - swop the potato for mashed cauliflower, and swede
That would all be a good start.
I think Andy meant that if you don't get a meter and start testing to see what different foods do to your bg, or if you generally ignore the fact that every carb that enters your mouth will be turned to sugar once inside you, it won´t take too long before you are insulin dependant. And/or facing neuropathy, retinopathy and renal failure. What wont be long ?
Well if you think about it i had the guts and determination to give up smoking and that wasnt by any means easy either i can tell you.I havent entirely given up nicotine i have a nicorette inhalator as a substitute and feel loads better for it too.I sat and thought long and hard last night that hey diabetes is very similar in that i have to have willpower and determination to stay away from bad food just like i stay away from cigarettes.I think giving up smoking was easier than controlling diabetes but anyways.I also remembered last night that hey i dont need to buy a meter the wife has an old one the district nurses gave her a new one and we kept the old one complete with a few test strips as the new one takes different type of strips.Theres even 2 lots of 50 strips with the old one.Ill have to look at such as Boots for some more strips and i could use the old lancet that she used to use.She has the once use lancets use em and throw away.Thats saved me a few quid there well remembered. Now i gotta make a few more changes.Might just have one last treat today as its my birthday and can have sumat im not supposed to have. Then get back on track again tomorrow.Just like giving up smoking i need to be strong here too,The takings at Greggs are gunna be down after today just like MacDonalds have lost out.Substitute Substitute Substitute is what my brain is saying now.Trial and error and determination and will power to beat this sucker of diabetes.Having read the facts i dont wanna go blind i wanna see my wifes grandkids grow up and see their children etc id hate to be blind.I gotta take control and i gotta be strong.Right well im gunna take a look on boots website now for those strips.Enjoyed the toast last night for me supper much better than the usual cake.I appreciate that people are trying to help me on here as well as others and i did think that some of the replies were a bit harsh but they are being realistic and sorta kicking me in the butt come on Johnboy you need to be strong and beat this sucker of a disease before it beats you kinda thing.Forge's post before this one has kinda rattled me all the things that could happen if i dont take control.I dont wanna be on insulin and i certainly dont wanna be on metformin either.Maybe if i show determination it might spur the wife on to do the same kinda be strong for us both.Weighed myself last night and am miffed not really lost owt still showing 90kg not good at all i need to loose some weight.
Need some batteries for the tester now think they are knacked them little button cell ones.Argos do em so do Wilko's
Johnboy – I can't tell you how pleased I am for you that you have decided to take a really proactive part in managing your condition. I'm certain you won't regret it.
Now, onto the tools you intend to use.
I can understand your desire to keep your costs to the minimum. No matter how much cash we have, none of us want to spend loads funding smething that we never wanted in the first place. Do start using the spare meter, and if necessary, change the battery. That's going to be just £1 or £2, I'd guess. The two pots of strips will get you started, and as that's 100 strips, it'll give you a short while to plan how you get the biggest bang for your buck.
If you look on Boots website, you will see most strips are around £20 for 50. That's not cheap! There are a few on there cheaper, but watch out, they tend to be smaller pots – 10 or 20, for some reason. Amazon or eBay may have a few cheaper options, but generally, it's marginal. It's important you really do focus on the cost of strips, rather than the “free” meter. Where we spend money regularly is on strips. When you have a meter, you can expect it to last a couple of years, probably. So, focus on the cost of strips.
Of those of us who have to buy our own kit, many choose to buy from this website:
http://www.homehealth-uk.com/medica...or_testing.htm?qerror=&flasher=&nc=1410332365
You will see the the meter costs £11.60 (you have to confirm you have diabetes), which includes 10 strips and a few lancets. That's your one-off cost.
Now the fab news.
Codefree strips are £6.99 for a pot of 50 (so, a third of the price of the Boots options), and if you can manage to buy 5 pots at a time, that works out at £25.99 for 250 strips, or £5.20 a pot. I'm sure you'll agree that's quite an impressive saving.
So, the bang for your buck, is either around £20 in Boots for 50 strips, or £18.59 (£11.60 for a brand new meter and 10 strips, plus £6.99 for an additional 50 strips.).
Make sure you have a good look, and think about the homehealth option before spending in Boots.
Good luck with it John. I am confident you will learn a lot.
John ... there is no diet to go on and come off ... there's a life style change for the rest of your natural. Thanks for that.Well my first stop would be to ask the nurse when i see her tomorrow if she would be willing to prescribe test strips.Havent been near Wilkinsons yet they sell the batteries needed for the meter at just £1.99p for the cheap ones or £3.49p for the Energiser ones.Prob better getting those cheap ones aint always the best.Come to that the Poundland sell a card with cell batteries on for just a quid but there again cheapo's.
Boots is too expensive for most things. If the nurse wont scribe em then id look at the Link you have provided for the strips.50 strips would last a while as id not be testing umpteen times a day. Some people i know do test several times per day.As for this mornings reading of 7.0 thats a good reading to say i hadnt had breakfast before doing it.Maybe the toast supper was a good option.Any how as its my birthday i pushed the boat out at lunch time and had a big breakfast well it wasnt that big really 1 sausage,1 egg,2 bacon,2 hash browns,1 toast slice and some beans.Just a treat really and not one of my choices every time we go out you understand.Back to the diet tomorrow.
