"Men who have a waist circumference of 94-102cm face a 1.5-2 times greater risk of suffering from cardiovascular disease"

Can any one tell me where should I measure for the above mentioned waist- Is it just above the hip bones and around the belly about 1cm below the belly button

From the X-Pert Course information :

a. Find the top of your hip bone.
b. Find the very bottom of your rib cage (you could mark both with a pen)
c. The half way point between the two is the middle of your waist.
d. Place the tape evenly around this point to measure your waist and assess your Health Risk.

OR

You may find it easier to :
Place your hand palm down, on your stomach. Place your middle finger on your 'belly' button and measure your waist just above your index finger.

So it has to be above the hip bones AND above the belly button it seems.

Make sure you have a long enough tape.........

Hi gdaran, and welcome to the forum :)
Does height and build not come into the equation here? Or to put it another way did you know that 47.5% of all statistics are made up on the spot? :D

I want to say thanks to all those friends who replied to me. I read them all and are really help full.
Thanking them all once again,
sincerely

Some points.

Having achieved a certain age I find that I am taller in the morning than in the evening.
I think that this is due to my spine (or at least the discs) extending in bed then compressing during the day.
Logically this means I am thinner first thing in the morning and my torso expands during the day as my spine shrinks.
So my waist measurement will change during the day.
Motto: measure in the morning :-)

Another guideline is that your waist should not be more than half your height.

Allegedly the best guideline is the ratio between your waist and your hips, for example.

So - at the moment my waist measures 37 inches.
Can't find the "absolute figure" for men, but think it is around 36"
I am 6 foot (in the mornings) so half my height is 36"
Hip measurement is 39" so on the wait/hip ratio I am less than 1 so O.K.

One out of three can't be too bad - hope that it is the most accurate.

Cheers

An interesting post LGC, I wonder how many of us actually now what our waist measurement is?

I weigh between 13.5 stone and 14 stone and could lose a bit more weight if I put my mind to it and tightened my diet but I am happy with my weight at the moment although I wouldnt want to put any weigh back on.

I wear size 36 trousers/slacks/jeans but have just measured my waist (just above my belly button) and it measures 40" but if I wore size 40" trousers they would fall down. I just think that I am probably not the only person in the room that quotes their trouser size for their waist size when asked
