Wait while I just stand up ..... Hello, my name is Barry and I'm a ..... T2 diabetic.
I've been around on here for some time without joining and I have to say I've found this site to be really helpful. I've learned a lot and I'm very grateful so I think now's the time to get stuck in.
First the bad news
I have a few things wrong with me that may or may not be due to diabetes. Heart failure, a titanium aortic heart valve fitted 20 years ago, a pacemaker two years ago, and kidney failure that has been in the low 30's for many years without getting any worse, so Hey Ho. I'm still plugging away hoarding my remaining marbles, and I'll be a young 80 next birthday. Don't feel it though. My blood sugar was in double figures for many years so I have the usual complications; Macular Degeneration in my left eye, Retinopathy in my right -- how's that for balance. Neuropathy in my feet -- shooting pains and walking on cobbles -- if you've got it you'll know what I mean. Oh, and I'm half deaf. And I struggled with weight most of my life.
Still with me?
I'm on Warfarin for the heart valve, Carvedilol and Digoxin for heart failure, Candesartin for blood pressure, Spironolactone and Furosamide for kidneys, and the lowest possible dose of Atorvastatin for Cholesterol, but I only take (honest!) 10mg every other day. My last reading was 3.8 so I'm on the verge of chucking it altogether. I'm on Lantus 32u every morning and Humalog 20u average per day depending on what I'm eating.
And now at last a bit of good news.
I'm 5'8" and my weight varied between 13 and 14 stone for years and years which was just on the BMI obese borderline. I ate and drank whatever I fancied for most of my life, so there. One year ago at 14 stone I discovered LCHF and in 20 weeks lost 20lbs; my midriff bulk went away and I felt like a champion. Then I eased up a bit and my weight loss slowed to a few pounds until ..... this morning! Naked on the scales -- exactly 12 stone! The last time I weighed that was 60 years ago in he army. My HB a1c from double figures a year ago went 9.8, 8.4, 6.8, 6.2, and last week 5.8. And I'm feeling 20 years younger.
Sorry to have gone on so long about it, but I'm a bit chuffed as you might have gathered. I have another topic I want to raise, but I'll do it later in the T2 forum.
And if you got this far, many thanks.
I'll sit down now.
Regards, Barry.

Hi and welcome. How woderful that you have been able to finally achieve the BMI and HBa1C that you have been seeking for so long. What a pity that the diet advice most of us have been given is the opposite of what you have recently found actually works. Keep up the good work and I hope your conditions don't worsen.

Wow...what an amazing journey. You have done incredibly well and it's so good to hear how well you feel despite so many issues. Congratulations on an amazing achievement. Welcome too....glad that you decided to dive in and join us :)

Hi Barry and welcome , my goodness you have overcome many hardships , and still a sense of humour, good for you :)

Barry fantastic I'm really cuffed for you , glad to see your doing so well a least with the diabetes side of things I'm only 3/4 your age and hope I have your outlook on life when I catch you up (I did say when and not if ) keep well buddy and stay safe JJ

Hello Barry,

Those are great results; hopefully the blood sugars will help with all the diabetic usual complaints. It would be great if your kidney function improved as a result.

Best

Hi and a very warm welcome from me. Fantastic news on your latest results, helps me to know this is the right path to take.

Thank you very much everyone for your welcome, it's nice to be here.
I'll try not to make a nuisance of myself, and maybe I can contribute from time to time with something useful, you never know.

Welcome, Barry.
So, what you're saying, is apart from all that, your fine?
