Wait while I just stand up ..... Hello, my name is Barry and I'm a ..... T2 diabetic.
I've been around on here for some time without joining and I have to say I've found this site to be really helpful. I've learned a lot and I'm very grateful so I think now's the time to get stuck in.
First the bad news
I have a few things wrong with me that may or may not be due to diabetes. Heart failure, a titanium aortic heart valve fitted 20 years ago, a pacemaker two years ago, and kidney failure that has been in the low 30's for many years without getting any worse, so Hey Ho. I'm still plugging away hoarding my remaining marbles, and I'll be a young 80 next birthday. Don't feel it though. My blood sugar was in double figures for many years so I have the usual complications; Macular Degeneration in my left eye, Retinopathy in my right -- how's that for balance. Neuropathy in my feet -- shooting pains and walking on cobbles -- if you've got it you'll know what I mean. Oh, and I'm half deaf. And I struggled with weight most of my life.
Still with me?
I'm on Warfarin for the heart valve, Carvedilol and Digoxin for heart failure, Candesartin for blood pressure, Spironolactone and Furosamide for kidneys, and the lowest possible dose of Atorvastatin for Cholesterol, but I only take (honest!) 10mg every other day. My last reading was 3.8 so I'm on the verge of chucking it altogether. I'm on Lantus 32u every morning and Humalog 20u average per day depending on what I'm eating.
And now at last a bit of good news.
I'm 5'8" and my weight varied between 13 and 14 stone for years and years which was just on the BMI obese borderline. I ate and drank whatever I fancied for most of my life, so there. One year ago at 14 stone I discovered LCHF and in 20 weeks lost 20lbs; my midriff bulk went away and I felt like a champion. Then I eased up a bit and my weight loss slowed to a few pounds until ..... this morning! Naked on the scales -- exactly 12 stone! The last time I weighed that was 60 years ago in he army. My HB a1c from double figures a year ago went 9.8, 8.4, 6.8, 6.2, and last week 5.8. And I'm feeling 20 years younger.
Sorry to have gone on so long about it, but I'm a bit chuffed as you might have gathered. I have another topic I want to raise, but I'll do it later in the T2 forum.
And if you got this far, many thanks.
I'll sit down now.
Regards, Barry.
