Hi everyone,
I was diagnosed with T2D in may 2025 and have been managing my glucose level, my last Hba1c was 5.8. My major concern now is that I am rapidly loosing weight, from 94kg in may 2025 to 78kg in February 2026,My GP said it’s because I cut carbs completely from my meals and ain’t eating well.

I am on Gavusmet/Glipimiride.please I need advice to stabilize my weight.

Hi and welcome. I'm assuming your GP is correct, and it's your low carb way of eating that's causing the weight loss. It does do that - I had a similar experience with fairly quick and substantial weight loss. However I didn't (and don't) take any medication, so that will complicate things a bit. Your medication will tend to reduce your BG, and you should make sure your doctor is aware of what you plan to do - you don't want to be going too low.

Does your doctor think that cutting carbs as a T2 isn't "eating well"?

When I decided I'd lost enough bodyfat around the end of 2024, I just increased the amound of fat that I ate. My carb intake is still around 20g/day most days, but I probably have a few more days at 30-40g than I did four or five years ago. I'm staying in ketosis all of the time, so I'm not running on glucose for energy. My weight is stable, and I am gaining or regaining muscle. Blood glucose has been normal now for nearly six years.

I dont do the carb thing myself (yet) But what is your fat intake like ?

I lost 30kg in my first nine months of low carbing, so your actual weight loss isn’t unusual. However now you need to add more calories in without adding carbs to stabilise your weight. Follow @KennyA ‘s advice and your blood glucose control will stay the same while you stop losing weight.

Hi @Morganreagan3 and welcome to the forum. Weight loss is always a worry, especially when it happens fairly quickly. I was in the diabetic range so I decided to cut my carbs right back to <30 gms per day. The weight just dropped off me, it was startling, and it didn’t stop dropping until I increased my carb intake. I did find a sweet spot, so to speak, for my carb intake. My weight stabilized after slowly increasing my carbs which has kept my blood sugars in the prediabetic range. I do a lot of exercise plus I’m on a med that increases insulin secretion.

As the others have said weight loss can happen if you simply aren't eating enough, so increasing fats and proteins is necessary if you decrease the carbs.

However, if you have already done this then it might be worth asking your GP for the tests to see if your weight loss is caused by something else. For example, if you have LADA (late onset T1 diabetes) or T3c diabetes then the weight loss could be caused by lack of insulin. Have you ever had a cpeptide test? (It measures how much insulin you produce.) Doctors tend to assume (mostly rightly) that all diabetics are T2 when initially diagnosed (other than children or people with extremely high hba1c), so they don't necessarily do the tests for other types.
