Hi i hope everyone is keeping well and enjoying the bank holiday weekend.

Just a quick question to what you guys do in the summer when it is scorching hot (i know it seems a while away yet ;) ) because i know we cant have ice cream or ice lollies or milkshakes or anything nice to cool us down.

It will be my first summer soon as a diabetic so it will be interesting to know what you guys tend to do.

Hi,

Oddly I read years ago ice cream doesn’t actually cool us down? Just fact checking what I just said, & it does appear there is no change on this. (A quick google asking if, does icream cool us down.”) The initial could in the mouth give this effect but the digestive system doing it’s job can raise body temperature.. Here’s one that popped up for me. https://www.independent.co.uk/life-...ucumber-watermelon-strawberries-a8464386.html

I’m T1. But even so, don’t bother with ice cream.

I do tend to make sure I’m well hydrated. Which helps. & if I’m working in a sun trap? Keep access to a hosepipe & rinse down.

I never used those to cool me down before diagnosis anyway. They may feel cool and taste “nice” but I doubt they actually reduce body temperature. You could make your own low carb ice pops and ice cream. They aren’t difficult. Or cool drinks.

clothing shade and breeze always made more difference to me and still do

Always have and always will just sip water. But not too cold. It’s carb and calorie free and good for you. A win win!

My understanding is that drinking and eating cold things raises body temp' as our systems work to balance the temp', thus creating heat. drinking hot, ie tea, the body works to shed heat, cooling slightly. Either way doesn't really matter, just stay well hydrated. I tend to migrate towards shade, being diabetic hasn't altered that.

Ice cream or anything really cold has never had any effect on cooling down in fact I don’t like drinks that are ice cold. I drink tea, coffee and juice.

I have no idea if ice-cream or cold drinks cool you down or not but when it's hot they are definitely enjoyable.
In the same way that on a freezing cold day, nothing hits the spot like a hot drink.
If ice-cream is your thing, i believe you can buy low carb/keto ice-cream, probably quite expensive, or make your own

Otherwise ice has absolutely no carbs, so any low carb drink of choice served with plenty of ice

When I'm in Italy in the summer, and it gets truly sweltering, I dampen my vest/t-shirt with cold water. As it evaporates, it cools just like sweating, but without the dehydration. This works well unless the humidity levels are too high - then I have to resort to using an electric fan to aid the evaporation :)

And I third it! A slice of ginger in it makes a nice change too.

Should summer just be an excuse for eating ice cream, try Oppo. ;) There are moderately low carb brands out there, just takes a little search. For me, I just drink even more water, with a splash of lemon juice or something, and hug the aircon.

I've just experimented with making a rhubarb shrub, with a little xylitol instead of sugar. Tastes great, just add 5 parts water to one part shrub.

I have a few strawberry plants, usually enough to provide 3-4 fruits a day but if they go crazy I mash them up with double cream and freeze spoonfuls in an ice cube tray.

Slices of cucumber or a couple of mashed up raspberries are nice in cold water.

thank you all for your replies really helpful, i just think its a pain in the bottom when you're chilling out with your family as a young adult and you can't enjoy some cooling down refreshements with them as one used to lol. Thank you everyone.

what is a shrub?

Whilst it is difficult to buy suitable ice lollies and icecream it is very easy to make them for yourself, just leave out the sugar, make a 'real' custard of eggs and cream, then freeze it, or use sugar free squash for lollies and I find that sugar free jellies with cream or yoghurts and maybe real custard for desserts from the fridge are also cooling on a hot evening.

Stick with the low carb and your tastes will change so that you no longer want such things, and you will start to look at people who do indulge with mild pity as they build up future problems for themselves.
Trust me, it does get easier. Enjoy being with people for their company, not for what they eat.
A party without food is still a party but a party without people... ?

Yeah, @niaz11, I miss milkshakes still. But I have become a huge herb tea afficionado. Zero sugar soft drinks are good in public and with friends. Drink and meter to check out the best ones for you.

I make my own ice lollies with low carb ingredients, and make my own low carb ice cream, and that helps heaps. For you, you may live somewhere where you can buy such products (I don't, and I'm a big ice cream fan). Your friends may never really understand what you are doing unless they get blood glucose regulation problems too, but be patient with them? Hang in there, and remember you have a dietary disease (if it's insulin resistance based type two), and tackling what you eat and drink is a huge part of you staying as healthy as you can for the duration.
