All the experts warned we would be worse off and you are telling me that's what the poor wanted?Many of us have that type of back ground & like yourself my husband & I have worked hard & done without to provide for our family. As have thousands of working class people, whom are now having to rely on food banks as there wages won't go far enough to feed there families (because it is the working families that are having to use them). I don't consider that acceptable for a developed country. Unfortunately hard work & careful spending isn't always enough! It doesn't mean people don't try & deserve to be suffering. No silver spoon here, just hard work + empathy.
Yes I think we are. I agree 100% with what you have said (in respect of the non-religious aspects).I guess you could say my own history is a harsher version of your own but my social and political attitudes as a result are a world away. Just saying. I think that everyone on earth should have the best healthcare with the best research backing that can be hobbled together and consistently improved. I think everyone should be supported emotionally and physically to have the dignity of work. I think no one should have to struggle to be clothed or fed, and no one should have to endure being abused or bullied to restrict their own thoughts, be physically abused or not be able to choose their own belief or lack of belief systems. I think children (and that has no age component but rather a vulnerability quotient) should be considered a sacred trust. I think that love is inherent to the human condition and should be nurtured rather than depressed. Lastly, I really believe that all individuals are made in the image and likeness of God and can attain theosis (becoming God themselves) so there is no such thing as a person more worthy of anything than another nor no such thing as a person unworthy, partially or wholly because God does not make junk, a waste of time and potential.
I don't get offended by any kind of diversity, much less diversity of thought and expression, rather I get offended by repression and violence and lack of caring, none of which you exhibit. I'm a similar background.
But I've worked, and saved, my entire life.
I've used every advantage I could, I've borrowed when it was advantageous, I've maxed out credit cards and transferred balances for cashback, I bought every share Maggie offered, I opened an account with every building society, I've invested in mutual insurers.
I've invested in the stock market.
But I've worked to pay for it.
I also know people that got the dole, then went down to the pub.
I know people that worked, and bought every new thing they could.
I know people that circumstances forced into poverty, but I know others that clamber to be there, then complain their new tv isn't big enough.

That's basically what investing is. Even saving to a degree, you gamble your interest rate stays higher than inflation.
I make no apology that I've spent my life working hard, saving, and now my gambles seem to have paid off so far. I'm put a lot of my spare time into it, when others where watching the TV, I was reading the FT.
(Now it's easier online)

So, the perception of 'fair', applies to the poor as well, and sometimes it's difficult to decide the best way to help, particularly to those that believe in something for nothing, and bought the empty promises leave gave them.

I'm not sure where you think I stand politically? I voted labour (socialist) in several general elections. (our labour MP was the best MP we ever had) then I realised that New Labour were more Conservative than the Conservative party and switched back. From now on I'll vote green because the environment is the one thing that really matters to all of us.
Some do not know what it is like being poor. When my eldest went to medical school most of the students had gone to private schools on her course but she went through the comprehensive system. As a class they visited the back to backs in Leeds to see the living conditions of the poor. She was amazed by the rich kids attitudes... Why do people live like this? they asked!! It was obvious why to my daughter, it was because these people were poor!
I like the idea of someone like Crabb becoming PM I think it is a way of getting caring compassionate Conservative views to the fore! These public school types have not experienced living in working class condition. D.
