"What have you eaten" Parallel Chat

Skipped breakfast for a good chat over coffee with a friend

l: a tuna 90 second bread with melted cheese.

tried baking an lc chocolate cake but was trying a different sweetener (liquid stevia) but missing a couple of ingredients too. Wasn't a success! Will still freeze it in small squares to have smothered in cream because the ingredients are quite costly.
The only instructions on the bottle are that 3 drops equal a teaspoon of sugar, But it either drops sporadically or spurts so no idea how much I used. Tasted like I hadn't used enough so sprinkled more on top hoping it would sink through but it just seemed to stay on top and tastes nasty.

D: chicken with green beans, courgettes and gravy. A square of cake with coffee icecream and a splash of Bailey's.
A glass white wine

I've had a hearing aid for my left ear (family history of left ear hearing loss) for many years but it was no help at all - same as my mother who also found it useless (NHS hearing aids). Even my brother who bought a really expensive hearing aid earlier this year has found that it wasn't really any help. I still have mine somewhere, but haven't used it for ages. I'm not going to bother trying to get an aid for my right ear. The old left one just irritated the ear anyway. I had problems years ago as an audio typist with the headset causing me to lose a level of hearing and had to give up the job because when doing the reception part of the job I couldn't hear what clients were saying - not a great deal of use in a role that required confidentiality, having to ask clients to speak up.

Hearing aid technology has improved out of all recognition @Annb. There's no comparison between the instruments I currently use and those I set out with or indeed the hearing aids my late mother, aunts, grandparents and great-grandparents struggled with.

I wouldn't be put off by your brother's experience earlier this year. It takes time to learn how to use the various programmes properly and we all get better with practice. He may need to visit his audiologist for a repeat hearing test and reprogramming of his hearing aid(s). He may also need to be shown how to switch programmes to meet different situations; this is easily done without removing the device.

I expect your local audiologist would be happy for you to trial a pair without obligation to see how you get on. I think you'll be pleasantly surprised.

I also wear 2 hearing aids and find it difficult to hear properly when in company. If I turn them up to hear a person, I put up the outside noise too so it's no better. Frustrating too to have to keep saying 'pardon' or 'say that again'.
The current generation of hearing aids can be programmed to meet this challenging situation @RosemaryJackson. As a result, you can hear companions without amplifying background noise.

Even more frustrating for Neil, who has a very quiet voice, because I almost always have to ask him to repeat what he has said. It must be very annoying for him. Mind you - he should know by now to speak up/more clearly, but it doesn't come easily to him.
I know exactly what you mean @Annb. My husband is blessed with exceptionally good hearing and is quietly spoken.
Speaking up doesn't come naturally to him.

Yes, Neil has very sensitive hearing and absolutely hates loud sounds. I believe loud noise is painful to him. Something to do with his Asperger's, I think.

Brunch was the last of the braised cabbage with 2 tiny bits of sausage in it with a couple of poached eggs on top.

There will be a 2nd meal - chicken with leeks. Maybe a sauce to go with it but not sure.

I had a couple of visitors about an hour ago - they didn't stay long but Hugo made a real pest of himself. He was quite beside himself with pleasure and two new people to make a fuss of him but he was just over the top so I had to shut him into the back porch to make him settle down. I let him back in after they'd gone and he was hunting all over the place trying to find them, whining and barking. He's still whining. He really likes people but he is so heavy and vigorous in his play that he's dangerous. Well, he is to me. He's almost knocked me over three times now. Luckily I was able to hang on to something each time and stop myself falling. His favourite place seems to be right in front of my feet when I'm trying to walk. Ah well - he'll be going home on Wednesday evening. :joyful:

Just back from a pub quiz for charity. AND we won! By half a point :p
A very enjoyable evening.
I had smoked fish pie that had a cheesy topping, with veg and mash on the side (left most of that). 2 small wines and soda.
Lunch had been a meze of cold and hot starters at a new Turkish restaurant . I did have some flatbread.
The day started with an exercise class and no breakfast.

I feel for you both @Annb. It must be difficult for you to turn up the volume on your radio or television to a level that's comfortable for you without disturbing Neil.

My hearing aids have only up or down for the sound. Yours sound like mini computers!
Hearing aid technology has certainly progressed dramatically over the last 10 years @RosemaryJackson.

There are in the ear styles and over the ear models available and they are now so small and lightweight, it's easy to forget they are there!

Morning all, hope all doing well.
Sounds like you have your hands full with Hugo @Annb Our canine visitor went home last night, without a backwards glance :) It’s been fun having her,but glad to get back to normal today. Definitely been feeling hungrier with the autumnal weather and the extra walks, eating too many nuts. Must remember that I am not a squirrel, who are in full hoarding mode around here.

must remember I'm not a squirrel next time I'm collecting my next stash of nuts trouble is they are in easy access in the cupboard we don't even have to climb trees or crack the shells open!

A nut bar
Double dancing
L: tuna mixed with celery, onion, carrot, mayo. Hm lc seedy crackers with aged pecorino. Yoghurt jelly
Swerved the cake being served at old people's club
D: pork cooked with onion, celery and mushrooms finished with cream cheese. Served with carrot.
Small white wine.

Emptying fridge ready for going away. Expect repetition and odd combinations

That's true @shelley262, but nuts eaten straight from the tree are irresistible.

Sadly, our old walnut tree lost its battle with honey fungus Armillaria mellea, so that's removed one temptation and the squirrels leave us precious few hazelnuts most years. I know. I know. I should be thanking them; they're doing me a favour.

I am having a difficult week foodwise. Had lunch out at a posh restaurant yesterday; Friday night I have a family get together/party; Saturday night I have an 80th birthday party. My Irish granddaughter is coming from London and we are stayingat the hotel for 2 nights. I seem to be living the high life all of a sudden! I can only do my best and hope for the best. I probably won't post over the weekend. Have a good week/weekend everybody. :)

Enjoy it and don't worry too much about the food issues. Have a great weekend.

Breakfast: scrambled eggs - shared some with Hugo but he didn't want it, so some was wasted. Never mind. Shan't fall for that again.

2nd meal will be either a ragout made with minced turkey or turkey burgers. Probably the ragout, then I can make some of the chick pea rice as well. Or maybe just mince mixed through the rice with some vegetables. That might be better to reduce the amount of tomatoes I am eating.

Oh Rosemary please do go and enjoy yourself and your family and friends wholeheartedly. T2 can step aside for a while, side effects or complications take years to develop and I reckon you've already beaten the odds. Life is for living and a few enjoyable meals and gatherings are probably worth their weight in making you feel good and loved.

Are you celebrating your 80th birthday or somebody else's on Saturday? @RosemaryJackson
