Type 2 What To Ask (About Insulin)?

gulp

Newbie
Hi

I've had Type 2 Diabetes for some years. Despite dieting & oral medication I have not managed to get my HbA1c below 9.5. So I have agreed with my GP, that I should probably start using Insulin. He has referred me to the Practice Specialist Doctor (appointment next week).

What, in the view of more experienced members, should I be asking her? I don't know what the issues are with regard to Insulin use.

Many thanks...

Hi @gulp It depends what regime your nurse recommends.

My advice is to take pen and paper to make notes. If you are started on insulin, check you're told how to store it, how to inject it (make sure you're shown) and what to do if your blood sugar goes low (a hypo). Also, ask if you would need to adjust or monitor your diet.

@gulp , I'm not on insulin, but would suggest if already have your meter and test strips on prescription, it is probably likely you will need more strips as you learn about how insulin is working for you. If you don't self test already, please do make sure that's covered. It's really important, in my view.

I agree with @azure's suggestion to take a pen and paper with you. An alternative would be someone else with a pen and paper, although I'd probably suggest you make the notes as you're familiar with diabetes.

Good luck with it all.
