A sorry tale of corner cutting and deception by both garages/dealers but a definite winner for your granddaughter. Interesting phrase reminding me that "we" are often separated by a common language.as they say.Brilliant sunshine here at the moment. Forecast says mostly cloudy at the moment but rain later. Well I'll enjoy the sunlight while I can. BG at 4.30 am was 9.1 - currently 9.4. I suppose I should do something about breakfast and try to get that down a bit.
Is anyone familiar with the expression (Scots): she'll no miss you and hit the wa', meaning someone will be on target with their accusation or in berating a wrongdoer? DIL is very much that person normally but recently has seemed less able to be so. Her elder daughter, on the other hand, is very much that person and seems to have very few inhibitions concerning the feelings of the target of her ire. Well, she took over the case of a garage providing very poor service for her mother's car.
The car was a 2nd hand one bought in Inverness which, after about a year broke down because the timing belt had broken. The car needed a new engine and (although it should have been taken back to the original dealer - the timing belt shouldn't have broken in that time) it was taken in to a local garage which is the agent for that kind of car. A new engine was needed and, eventually fitted. Neil suspected that the engine was not new since the £3,000 charge was about the price, he thought, for a reconditioned engine to be fitted. However, the job was done and the car was running again. 8 months later, the same thing happened again. Back to the local garage. The damage wasn't so bad this time and a new engine was not required but the repair was to cost £900. Surely, DIL thought, a new engine is under warranty so the garage should be responsible for the repair. But, no - there was no warranty. DIL would have to pay for the repair.
Elder granddaughter came into action, pointing out the garage's responsibility under consumer law and explaining that they had supplied a repair that was not fit for purpose. There is no way that a timing belt should break again. After all, along with the new engine, the timing belt was new so either it was faulty, or it was wrongly fitted. Garage had to admit that the engine was not new, but reconditioned and, believe it or not, the timing belt was the old one that they had repaired and put back on.
The garage is not admitting any liability but they have offered "as a gesture of goodwill" to repair the engine free of charge. Success for the outspoken granddaughter! Nobody in the family will trust that garage again and, I'm sure, it could be taken further. But I know so little about engines and cars that I'm not sure about that. Anyway, the car will be repaired free of charge so it's a winner for granddaughter.

Thank you @dunelmAnother smashing lighthouse piece, thanks for sharing. Enjoy that sun while it lasts.
Enjoy your time in Bordeaux, and may your travelling be easy and effortless @dunelmGood morning everyone on quite a bright and sunny start here in the dark and dangerous north. Packing day - we are off to Manchester this evening and then an early flight tomorrow to Bordeaux. I say early but it’s really the time it takes to get through security - hours of fun and that’s just the priority boarding bit. It’s then a bus and a train, like having a bit part in the film Trains, Planes and Automobiles. All the modes of transport but not necessarily in the right order. Be back next Wednesday as long as the French strikes don’t cause changes. Art bit, colour day! Have the best day that you can, don’t forget to use your favourite pronouns. Must be time for lofty.

Thank you @ianpspursMorning all from a bright start here. Yesterday's family gathering went splendidly and the turkey was a triumph darling, a triumph. For taste and moistness high welfare, game hung turkeys are better and less fuss to cook than all but top end red meat for me. @lindisfel hope you acquire a microwave and the travel goes smoothly. @gennepher enjoy the early fine weather and thanks for the mysterious lighthouse. @dunelm splendid art again thank you. I hope the travel goes well and you enjoy Bordeaux - from memory a breathtaking entry by major road. Four grandchildren here today all wearing Easter Bunny ears- visitors called off for fear of giving MIL their bugs. She will be disappointed but they will all be coming to Wales in late May. . Indian railway curry - turkey not chicken and no train - on the menu here today or/and tomorrow.
Lovely poem and true but the unwoke won't have it because it doesn't fit their alternative truth which is manifestly nonsense. It's all about the bankers and a cost of everything, value of nothing mentality. Autocorrect may have sanitised that .

Unparliamentary to be blunt and use the commonly understood term. All of you and you's knew that well enough but we'll both play alongGood afternoon Ladies and Gentlemen.
A 5.5 this morning.
But the unwoke……
Just for me, me’s and myself please explain.
Again nice paintings @gennepher and @dunelm. Safe travels and remember to avoid the protesters if possible.
Stay safe all.

I don't know about unwoke, Ian is describing to me uncaring selfish capitalism. They wouldn't mind if the health service went down the tubes they would be able to pay for the best and get it immediately.Good afternoon Ladies and Gentlemen.

I don't think there is much of a master plan more whatever gets them from crisis to crisis. I don't think that : a) the NHS is being deliberately run down ready to privatise or b) their dogma can allow them to connect the dots. Too few workers due to untreated illness and disease culls or debilitates the native workforce. Importing cheap labour to compensate hid the problem for a generation and a half.I don't know about unwoke, Ian is describing to me uncaring selfish capitalism. Or get the microwave, & cook every meal in it before buying so much oil.Had quick look at my oil tank at weekend! In a couple of weeks I shall be running on empty!
800 litres ordered coming Thursday and a new microwave. That's my pocket money gone West.
D.
It is about 60p a litre.I keep meaning to ask Neil to check our oil tank - it must be getting low by now. Wonder what the price is just now. 500 Litres is the minimum the supplier will deliver so it won't be cheap.
Could be right.I don't think there is much of a master plan more whatever gets them from crisis to crisis.
