My "named" Doctor who incidentally I try not to see, is also the Diabetes specialist at the practice. I avoid him as he does not instill me with confidence. Like yours, @ravensmitten, he told me that is was not necessary to test, he believes or at least touts that the results of an annual HbA1c is all that is needed. I guess that must be the official line from the NHS. I do my own thing and so far I have managed to keep my bloods under control so that it now states on my blood results "in remission". Hope that continues as to be honest I have struggled a bit since last year.
I think all the non-support I have received from HCPs over the years may have got to me. I used to be keenly motivated now it's a bit deja vous. Don't mean to be negative as I think things might he changing for the better albeit very slowly. I don't get "you must eat carbs" like I used to, and whilst they won't advocate low carb, I now get "just keep on doing what you are doing." My last review was actually quite positive she was impressed with the control I was achieving and the weight loss. After nearly 5 years I am also still symptom free which has got to be a good thing. My siblings are all type 2 as well, but have bought into "keep taking the tablets and follow NHS guidelines". Each of them are now suffering one sort of diabetic issue or another. Eyes and feet problems and one had a stroke a few years ago. The other side of it is, I react to dairy so my cholesterol is very high as a result my Qrisk score is pretty awful. However as Qrisk seems to be a bit of a lottery, I'll accept the risk. At the end of the day, we all have to do what seems right to us.
Didn't get around to posting yesterday but FBG was 5.9 and this morning it is 5.7.
Cheers.
Surgeries are so different I might try again for some testing strips nxt time I go but I'm not holding my breath lolMorning all. 8.1 so slightly better. I didn't have a Glucometer and when I went to see the nurse at our surgery, I asked him to take my blood so that I had a rough idea how I was doing, told him because I was T2 I wasnt allowed to have one. He promptly marches out of the room and comes back with a Glucometer and strips! I get 100 strips per prescription so I consider myself very lucky. Unhappily, my rule-breaking nurse has since been 'let go'. Not because of me tho, I hasten to add. I'm due to have a blood test this month and the way things have been, I don't think it will be good news. Have a great day everyone.
I was told if a person is on meds for diabetes then testing strips would be prescribed. Is that not the case anymore. I fund my own as I was always getting "huffs and sighs" from the gp and nurse when I kept enquiring as they did prescribe previously despite not being on meds.Surgeries are so different I might try again for some testing strips nxt time I go but I'm not holding my breath lol
I have never been given any prescriptions for strips or lancets I was told didn't need to test ect yet I was originally ( 9 yrs ago) given a meter , some irony there . I have funded myself since day one .I was told if a person is on meds for diabetes then testing strips would be prescribed. Is that not the case anymore. Thankyou, I was never offered medication just told to go and sort by diet and exercise so I just got on with things and its become a habit now. Your blood sugar levels are certainly to be admired. Something for me to strive for, should of course, stop eating so much protein in order to support that ambition. Never mine, tomorrow is another day for all of us.Evening @Ryhia.
Crikey! An awful lot can happen between annual HbA1c tests and, as we age, the potential for change to occur is that much greater. Small wonder he doesn't instill you with confidence.
I was issued with a glucometer and test strips, it must be said, upon diagnosis in 2003 and have received 50 strips with each repeat NHS prescription every 12 weeks ever since; not quite sufficient to test daily, but it's a help. (I self fund the balance.)
A practice nurse once muttered "I don't know why you're testing" but didn't look me in the eye when she passed the remark and moved on quickly without waiting for a reply. Last time we met, she reviewed my HbA1c results plus lipid panel and commented "We should all be eating the way you're eating." That's the closest she's come to paying me a compliment!
Congratulations Ryhia on controlling your BG numbers without medication.
