What's the best low carb breakfast

Hi all,

Just a quick question for everyone - What has everyone found to be the best low carb breakfast? And I would assume this would have the best effect ie least effect on blood sugars? (the more specific the better ie if it's a muesli which brand etc)

I was thinking fry up although I've just got my triglicerides down from 13.9 to 2.42 and don't really want them creeping up. I'm worried enough at the moment!

the problem i have with having just a protien breakfast is that i dont think i can stomach eggs and bacon day in and day out.

i found that if i take a couple of rice crackers it is not too bad....or 1 slice of bugens bread. i am hoping to start having some natural yogurt with berries..... it is a shame i cannot have porridge...i was actually liking it :(
 
I have a 2-egg omelette, cooked in butter, most mornings. Or I can take a small portion of Lizi's Granola occasionally - not every day, or things start creeping up again.

It's carbs that raise your triglycerides, not fat. At least they do with me. (Also alcohol :wink: ) Your cholesterol/lipid profile should actually improve if you eat a low-carb diet - no need to avoid fat! :D

Have a look at Viv's Modifed Atkins Diet for an easy-to-follow list of low-carb foods. There's no need to go so low if you don't want to - just add in a few extra Low G I carbs to the level you want.

Some great suggestions here, I might try a few of them next week the yoghurt with blueberries sounds nice. Even the eggs and bacon sounds good... I just don't have time to cook every morning.

Hiya. :) Just wondering if you have actually tested before and after porridge to see if it has a bad effect on you? It's worth bearing in mind that some of us can tolerate it for breakfast without too many problems.

I have tested my blood. The problem is that I wake up high in the morning, so even when i had porridge for breakfast, my BS at +2hrs was lower than the reading before...(does this make sense) so cant really tell if its good or not

Makes sense to me.
I tend to wake up O.K. to a little high, but go higher in the next hour.
2 hours after breakfast and I am lower again but still a bit high.
After that my BG goes steadily down through the day.
I was wondering if Metformin would help with the morning highs but I see you are already on that (along with much else).

Sometimes its very difficult to find a trend....i still cant find one..or what the tests mean. I mean obviously i know if i eat something bad then why the test is high, but some things seem random.

I have started seeing some results between 6 and 7, so that is great for me, but i have the feeling it is going to be insulin to reduce my DP. Does anyone know if low carbing help with DP?

Hey there!

I'm not Type2, but I do low-carb to keep my insulin use low. For breakfast I have one of:

1. Sausage, 2 scrambled eggs
2. Bacon, 2 fried eggs
3. Raspberries 50g, Total full fat yoghurt 75g, Lizi's granola 20g sprinkled on top. About 15g carb in the lot.
4. 1 sliced avocado, 2 slices ham sliced, handful walnut halves, sprinkling of pumpkin seeds. Bacon works well instead of ham if you prefer.

To avoid cooking of a morning, I cook whole pack of sausages one evening and store in fridge. Same with bacon. Re-heat in microwave. Cook scrambled egg in microwave.

My BG tends to be ok(ish) when I wake up, but rises significantly within the first hour - while I'm getting ready before I eat. I'm now getting up and eating straight away which seems to be helping avoid the rise. Obviously, I take insulin, so this might not be the same for you.

Yep me too or with strawberries or raspberries. Sometimes am decadent and mix the Greek with strawberry yoghurt. :D

Steve Phinney reckons that you can ignore most of the carbohydrate content in natrual yoghurt, as long as it contains live bio-cultures. The carbs listed on the label are the from the milk used to make the yoghurt and they are mostly digested by the bacteria:

as long as you use 'live culture yogurt' ignore the sugars listed on the nutrition facts label. This is the amount of lactose (milk sugar) that was used in the ingredient milk before the yogurt was made. In live culture yogurt, more than half of this is broken down into lactic acid during the fermentation process that makes yogurt. Unlike lactose, lactic acid is easily absorbed by the body without raising your insulin level.

I suppose, as ever, the only way to see if this is true, is to eat and test.
 
When I have time, I love a "Full English" without bread or potatoes, so scrambled eggs, crozzled bacon, fried mushrooms in butter.
Delicious and will keep me going til lunch and then all I'll need is a cup of coffee and a sugar free snack.

No sausage, tomatoes and black pudding in your Full English Hana?
 
If my fasting levels are in the 4s I will be really wicked and have one of Aldi's harvest morn wheat biscuits }like weetabix}. The packet says 25g in 2 biscuits .
I achieve low fasing levels by eating very low carb evening meals {not all the time.} So as I haven't had any carbs {or very few } sinde the previous lunchtime I think this is OK.
Not sure how may carbs normal weetabix have but have a feeling it may be more. I only buy them from Aldi because they are cheaper and as I don't have them very often {only when my fasting levels are low and I have run out of berries} they last for ages.
 
Love all the suggestions spent tonight reading Viv Atkins diet adopted for diabetes. Im seeing my doctor on Modnay so will talk to him as well but I think I'm going low carb as of next week. to be honest bar breakfast my diet has been pretty low carb. So only a few minor changes.
Can't wait bring on the fry up- straight after gym :evil:

I would advise against using the 'Atkins' word to your doctor, at least at first. Some are fine with it, others react as if you are about to take a large dose of arsenic!

Say something like "I am going to try a reduced carbohydrate diet to see if this helps me control my blood sugars any better". If you get a good response you can go into more detail.

We have 3 GPs in our practice; one knows I use Atkins and approves; one I have been warned not to mention the word to! The third, the diabetic specialist, gave me a funny look but just warned me against too much fat - which I have ignored.

You don't gorge on fat on this diet, you just don't avoid it. You need the fat on a very low carb diet, but as you increase the carbs, so you reduce the fat. It's a balance. I know for me at least that carbs + fat = obesity, high BGs and high cholesterol. Protein + fat = weight loss, reduced blood sugars and improved cholesterol.

My HbA1c on diagnosis was 6.5. After 3 months on Atkins it was 5.6. You can do that too! :D
