This illiterate is the problem I have in this clue.

I have found a few pictures of Tad Lincoln that are as near identical to Willies photo as I am likely to find. The trouble is that although he wouldn't take lessons I think that his father Abraham did.

Also I doubt that they raised a memorial to Tad.

Willies clues are indicating that it could be one of these 2.

It is the way Willie has entered *illiterate that has thrown me,

I am now going to say it is Thomas "Tad" Lincoln

Might double deal after Zola throws in a few ideas, if rules permit.

I am rather clueless on this one Izzzi....

I will bow to your superior knowledge on this one.

The first person I thought of was Abraham Lincoln...So if it was his son I was close eh....

Sorry Zola, When I say YOUR RIGHT I now must bow to your gift of getting the correct answer,

I just flew over Washington last night and the current President "Barack" told me that Zola knows best.

Therefore using my double dealing, it is Abraham Lincoln

At the risk of sounding like a desperate person clutching at straws I can also reveal the following facts.

Abe was born in 1809

Dageurre published his "how to do it" paper in 1839

I rest my portmanteau

I considered the possibility that Tad might wear Abe's uniform and that the picture might really be Abe but Abe was 30 before photography was invented so I concluded the photo was not of him.

Tad was born in 1853 which is after the invention of photography so I will still say Tad Lincoln.

Abraham Lincoln spent less than 12 months in all attending schools as a youth growing up on the frontier.

btw, I looked up portmanteau and ended up somewhere in Visual Thesaurus, now know. (this is good fun as weather is a bit thundery )

Willie said that the subject's parents were illiterate and this did not fit Abe. He did not have much schooling but his mother tutored him. She did not sound illiterate to me.

Tad didn't like the idea of school and wouldn't have it. Abe and Mrs Abe seemed happy with that and let him run wild. They do not sound like highly educated parents so I have assumed that Willie is talking about them.

I still say it's Tad.

Good point, but what if it was done by a artist, I will jump into my jet and visit the Art Gallery
