Type 1 Why so low?

Is there a reason why my blood sugar would be really low today? I’m still working on my control and normally I’m around 7 or 8 for most of the day, often creeping up during the afternoon as my lantus wears off. Today it hasn’t gone above 5.9 and before my evening meal I was actually hypo, where I’d often be more like 10 or more!

I’ve eaten as normal, no unusual exercise and I’m as sure as I can be that I didn’t double up on lantus (surely that would be a lot worse anyway). Any ideas?

Ok, so it’s just a random thing then? I’m a bit nervous of dropping very low overnight.

Lorna - I noticed over the last couple of days people commenting their insulin sensitivity was increasing as the weather cooled, and today on Twitter, there have been several comments to that effect, reflecting the weather.

Just keep an eye on it, with lots of testing. I think some folks even have to tweak their ratios, but I guess testing will help clarify that for you.

I'm not T1, so I'll tag @Diakat and @Juicyj who might have some relevant comments.

Hi Lorna, the weather can affect numbers (let's face it, almost anything can). Winter usually gives me better control than summer.
So it's the usual story, test, look for patterns and be prepared. So if worried about an overnight low you can set an alarm for 3ish to test. Have a snack by the bed as well.

Hi @LornaFarrell - my insulin requirements have increased with the colder weather, I tend to find warmer weather improves sensitivity.

Personally with hypos I don’t act on one day in isolation and instead look for a repeat pattern before making any insulin adjustments - if your nervous before bed time then set an alarm for 2am to do a test then.
